5 reasons Microsoft is becoming more like Apple

The events of the last few months shed a little more light on the road than Microsoft is starting to follow. Clearly, that path is heading towards making Windows an ecosystem closed (to Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),): controlling both the hardware and the operating system and third-party applications.

The usual

1.- The most important Microsoft software packages are closed software (Windows, Microsoft Office, etc.). This is nothing new, but it does not stop being an element to take into account.

2.- Microsoft has always made sure that computers around the world come with Windows pre-installed. To do this, historically, it has entered into large agreements with hardware manufacturers. This has become a kind of "Microsoft tax" (since you cannot choose to buy the computer with the operating system of your choice or without any pre-installed operating system).

The new 5 reasons

1.- Secure boot: The implementation of this new functionality by Microsoft will complicate the installation of other operating systems on "Windows 8 Certified" computers a bit more. And I say "complicate" only because they promise that it will be possible to disable Secure Boot, thus allowing Linux installation. However, they have already stated that this will not be possible on mobile devices. That is, these devices will be completely "closed."

2.- Metro: Windows8 RT - the new variant of Windows for ARM-based devices - will only be able to run Metro applications. Even on Windows8 x86 - which is supposed to be the most open variant, albeit at a higher cost - it will not be possible to load a Metro application in parallel. In other words, Microsoft considers traditional desktop applications to be "old".

3.- Visual StudioMicrosoft made an attempt to completely remove support for creating desktop applications with its Visual Studio development tools. Seeing the outrage of the programmers, he quickly withdrew his decision and vowed to leave the desktop development tools in VS, but the intention was quite clear: they want to force developers to stop creating desktop applications and only write applications Metro that can be distributed exclusively through the Microsoft App.

4.- MicrosoftApp: Metro applications can only be installed through the Microsoft App store. Obviously, Microsoft cuts its cut for each sale made through this system. Some call the 30% charge for each app sold a "new Microsoft tax." This also means that Microsoft will have full control over the applications installed on your computer.

5.-Surface: Microsoft has already given some steps (although still very embryonic) to sell devices under its own brand. This would allow him to close the circle (to Apple) and control not only the development of the software but also the hardware.

In addition, we must mention the ACPI of certain computers, which is made only for Windows, and when you install some Linux, no matter how light and stable the version is, it is very slow on the pc. I already lived it = Yes.

Do you know what base Ubuntu uses? GNU / Linux, yes, yes, you read right, GNU / LINUX.

Hala champion today you go to bed knowing something else, that Ubuntu as a distro that is uses a GNU / Linux base

  8.   zagurito said

Well, from what I see you can read, but your reading comprehension is so bad that the elementary school children laugh at you.

I have a website about GNU / Linux and I am a computer technician, of course I know that Ubuntu is a system based on GNU / Linux, what I am saying ... (ALERT! Now is a good time to pay attention!) (I'll tell you explain like a little child)

Ubuntu is a child whose father and mother are GNU / Linux, he has many siblings because it is easy for GNU / Linux mother and GNU / Linux father to make another child! (Well! It's positive!). In the first years of learning Ubuntu they explain to him that it is based on his parents (GNU / Linux), but as he grows up he forgets his parents and says "I, Ubuntu Canonical, I am based on UBUNTU" (FIN !! Comment for smart people: He doesn't say it explicitly in real life)

Have you understood it like this? In other words (and I get serious and stop laughing at you) what I mean is that THE COMPANY responsible for Ubuntu, Canonical, no longer sells you an operating system based on GNU / Linux, but sells you an OS ( acronym for Operating System) UBUNTU. In other words, you already forget where you come from.

Because I don't know about you, but Mac is based on the beginnings in BSD and I believe that it is currently a UNIX 03 system and have you heard someone say the roots of the Mac OS system?

PS: If your little intelligence makes you answer this comment, really, I will not answer you again ...

There is a point that nobody has mentioned and it is the loyalty of the clients, it is well known that most end up with a pirated version of Windows, at least in Costa Rica it is like that and I think that in the rest of Latin America too ... who will continue to be loyal to a system that does not value? And prices, what will prevent people from buying a system or equipment that is worth about the same but works better?

Ubuntu is there, a few versions ago, resembling more and more Apple.

One thing is a market with "closed" applications and another is a repository of free applications. One thing has NOTHING to do with the other, except their "centralization."

On the other hand, if what you mean is that the Google Market is the same as Apple's and now Microsoft's. It's possible. This is one of the criticisms made by the father of free software, Richard Stallman.

    Cheers! Paul.

I would not like to support microsoft with this, but complaining about the Microsoft App (it is also good for the appstore) would not be similar (eye, similar is not the same) to complaining about the software repositories of the different GNU / Linux distros? Isn't this a way to control the software that runs on the OS? Okay, I know you can download the sources and compile them in the purest gentoo style, but how many really do it? Or rather how many have the knowledge to do it?

On the other hand, except for the odd distro that is RR or LTS, someone believes that you can sell a computer with a GNU / Linux distribution with a validity period of 6 months and tell the user, in 6 months you have to reinstall SO because you no longer have support and incidentally cross all your fingers and toes so that everything continues to work for you and the upgrade does not bother you at all, or pray to all the saints you know that an update of a RR does not of a kernel panic. If you opt for an LTS, those affected (and not so affected) by versionitis will see how the software provided by the repository becomes "obsolete".

I do not accept octopus as a companion animal (you learn with Linux) or a boat as an aquatic animal (read I use free software) the average user does not give a shit ... if you use free software, what you really want is to turn on the device, that the programs That you use works for you without having to touch here or there, that if you want the wiffi to work for you, you have to install proprietary programs, etc, etc.

Finishing that it is gerund, microsoft looks more and more like apple, yes and what? It is your right to do so and run your business as you see fit, if you don't like it, no one forces you to use it, you have free alternatives (once installed and configured, you can now grab it with cigarette paper, start saying that my distro la It is longer than yours, and after a while you get angry because you have changed an environment or a program and make a fork to finish filling your ego in the best of cases, in the worst you can always make a derived distro that contributes little or nothing, except confusion)

Ale! The flame is already lit and you can take turns to be able to stone me at ease.

PS: I think that in Google Play or in the Ubuntu Software Center they sell some stones with spikes that work like a charm, but you can always use the "free as beer" boulders that can be downloaded from the official Fedora repositories, Arch and OpenSuse 😉

  19.   zagurito said

And, from my point of view, if we get lost soon we will see Ubuntu try to follow these steps ... because the latest versions sell you a UBUNTU, not a system based on GNU / Linux.

Well, maybe you are right with the donations but many of these are made in countries where they would not have to pay taxes anyway, in my country in the school where I study elementary microsoft gives away an entire computer center maybe it was to create consumers at last And after all but if I must say that without this center I think that many of my low-income colleagues would never have learned to use the computer even if it were Windows, in short that makes a difference, it is not surprising that now Microsoft is increasing its popularity and its "Good reputation" since other companies like Apple have never done things like that, I have not heard in all my life that Apple donates a penny against AIDS, or that gives macs in schools, nothing ,,, but I have heard how Apple demand everyone ...

I do not mean whether the products, hardware, services or software that apple or microsoft sell, I mean the social morality that they have, that apple is returning to human society ??? Well, nothing because all technology is exclusive, they demand even a rounded corner (as if they were the inventors of the circle) and they do not contribute with anything or with industry standards (case of usb in europe with the iphone), microsoft will not be the best in this matter but at least they have more social conscience more marked than apple.

You need to add the new intel atom clover trail that only runs windows 8

  24.   Gibran said

That does not sound like a monopoly and a relationship of interest Microsft-Intel remember that it has never been so blatant, at least intel tried to make a base OS GNU / Linux Maembo that would later merge with Moblin (Nokia) to create MeeGo, after its horrible failure; NOT BECAUSE OF THE OS, proof of this is that it became Tizen and the community is more critical than ever and months after the presentation of the SDK, it is already being told about the future direct competition of Android.

The cause of the failure of MeeGo is Intel and Nokia, which in recent times have only turned their backs on a great project that is GNU / Linux; Nokia cowered and preferred to go with Windows and its WP7, a result of lost sales worldwide and one of the strongest crises in recent years. Intel separated from MeeGo now will probably see the end of its monopoly ARM is today in the development of processors, Intel does not generate visible developments proof of this is that the difference between the CoreI5 Nehalem and the CoreI5 Ivy bryge are minimal. ARM evolves overnight and with lunux inside it flies, so Intel is out on the in.

The future mobile Linux and its evolution in ARM architectures.

Of course ... one of the marketing rules is "Locate the industry leader" and "See what he is doing." The good thing is that in recent times, we increasingly see how Apple falls shorter and shorter before the competition ... look at the IOS6 is not a version with really new things like Android does but rather an update.

  26.   Juan Vallejo said

As things are now, you only have to take a look at any mediamark catalog to realize that most manufacturers think that the key to success is to blatantly copy Apple

  27.   kasymaru said

Well, I don't think Microsoft is stupid enough to commit suicide in that way, I imagine that somehow it would seek a balance between its hardware and that of its partners ... since it is not convenient for either side.

  28.   dah65 said

But they are still donations. They would also help Apple to lower taxes, and it seems that it does not. Ergo, there is a difference between both companies

  29.   yashirasu said

When the alms are great, even the saint distrusts

Regarding the issue ... playing hard + soft "inviolable" ... is a double-edged sword ... what happens if OEM manufacturers turn their back on Microsoft ... it's difficult ... but what if they start manufacturing without pre-installed OS. or lean on Linux, maybe it is a double-edged sword, microsoft had advantages for being Semi-Open, with the installation of applications etc ... if it closes absolutely it can be a tremendous stumble

  30.   Germaine said

As far as I have seen; I can buy a laptop or netbook without any pre-installed OS, in fact I am writing on a Samsumg RV408 to which after testing many distros and versions of W $ I finally left LM13-KDE-64, and those at home have been made based on the taste and use that everyone will give it, there is a table with Linux and another with W $. The parts were bought and assembled, according to plan.
I just think that for games and graphic design, Linux programs are not yet as developed as those that run under M $ and that is a great disadvantage, and better if they place so many obstacles, that will make people look at Linux differently and start testing as many of us have done and then we no longer want to return to M $, I see it more as a benefit to develop free software than as an impediment.

  31.   kasymaru said

I think the same as the post and adding my opinion I think that it is not useful for Windows 8 to be increasingly expected by consumers is Apple since if Microsoft achieves what Apple has done with its products (in the exclusivity and expectation of the fanboys) would be a before and after.

I am not a supporter of any of these companies, in fact both have things that I despise, but I must clarify that if there is one thing that I admire about Microsoft and it is that this donates money something that I have never heard from Apple.

  32.   OSuKaRu said

The good thing that I possibly see from this is that, if Windows closes like Apple, creating its world, with its hardware and others, it can provoke other companies (IBM, Acer, HP, ... etc) to adopt and develop their own linux distribution to face this incipient competition. It's my hope, at least. 😀

  33.   OSuKaRu said

    Acer? I meant Asus 😛

The equipment should come clean, empty and the customer should decide if he wants to buy it with a system. It is already well of the abuses of Mocosoft and Apple.

  35.   Lucas Romero di Benedetto said

I hope so! but I doubt it, because in the current way MS and Apple make money since by including their software they are also charging you, it is as if they force you to buy it, that simple, and they make money with it. If the PCs came bare, people would install everything or opt for Linux.

  36.   Gibran said

I think it is not necessary to remember that there are already titans in terms of GNU / Linux base OS development such as Ubuntu (which finally seems to make an alliance with Dell), Red hat that should promote the fedora project and Gnome on desktop platforms, Suse, Debian.

I don't think time should be wasted in starting an OS from scratch, better to support companies that already have half the work done. Now that buying companies is in fashion why not buy a canon (or better yet join forces). With the development of software and hardware in full swing I believe that companies should look for real alternatives to everyday problems.

LibreOffice, Blender, Cinelerra, Gimp, inkscape, Bluefish and a long etc ... are a true alternative to proprietary software, even more so with companies like Adobe that presents drop-in developments, you should look back because I think they are on your heels. is that in one of those they even exceed it
