Free Software: Twenty-two new GNU software releases in the last month

As is customary, the FSF at the end of each month has offered us a great balance, on the new program releases known within the official software created and endorsed within the GNU Project. And for this month of January 2024 there were a total of 22 new launches, which do include the following programs: Anubis (v. 4.3), a daemon that sits between the Mail User Agent (MUA) and the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA); AUCTeX (v. 13.3), an integrated environment for the production of TeX documents in Emacs; and GNU DDRescue (v. 1.28), a fully automated data recovery tool.

Finally, we inform you that the Free Software Award-winning project and the GNU package Jami is asking for your support. Cyrille Béraud, president of Savoir-faire Linux Inc., the company behind the Jami project, talks to us about the work that goes into its development, the importance of privacy in communication, and how the free/libre tool helps people communicate with confidence in freedom. Jami's mission is to provide everyone with free and secure communication software that respects your privacy. Please share the word and consider making a contribution to their cause.

Open Source: OSI board expands, focusing on AI and international policies

This February 2024, XNUMX, the Organization OSI (Open Source Initiative) has officially informed us that Professor Sayeed Choudhury and Gael Blondelle were chosen to fill the two new board positions due to their experience in areas that will be most relevant to the OSI in the coming years: AI and international policies. This in order to continue with the objective of expanding the board to give greater operational stability and continuity to said organization.

I am honored to join the OSI board, and I look forward to helping OSI on board more sponsors and affiliates globally. The work being done on defining open source AI is fantastic and we need an organization like the OSI to advocate for open source AI in an elaborate and well-articulated way. At the same time, we also have to defend the open source definition (OSD) which is regularly under attack from different sides. The OSD has enabled the development of open source technologies over the past 25 years, and we need to ensure this continues. Gael Blondelle, Member of the Eclipse Foundation

GNU/Linux: Release of SysLinuxOS 12.3

GNU/Linux: Release of SysLinuxOS 12.3

The last of last month (January 2024) has been released about the official announcement about the release of SysLinuxOS 12.3 version. And for those who don't know much or anything about SysLinuxOS DistroIt is worth briefly highlighting that this is a live GNU/Linux Distribution based on Debian (12/Bookworm) designed specifically for system administrators and integrators. Therefore, it focuses on offering a complete network environment that integrates several software tools (VPNs, Wireshark, Etherape, Ettercap, PackETH, Packet Sender, Putty, Nmap, Cutecom, Packet Tracer, and many more) under a graphical interface friendly using the MATE and GNOME desktop.

SysLinuxOS is updated to version 12.3 with the Linux Kernel 6.5. In this version, the numerous previous bugs have been corrected and improvements are incorporated to make it much more intuitive and easier to use. Many changes are under the hood, while others are aesthetic, and others improve the menu and system icons, both for the version with the GNOME and MATE desktop environment. In this update, I have excluded two or three programs in favor of others that I believe are more useful for greater interoperability. For this reason, I have added WoeUSB, Teams for Linux, Webex, Github Desktop, Wiregui, Timeshift, among many others.
