I love KDE, but….

I can say it without fear, KDE is currently the best Desktop Environment having GNU / Linux, the most beautiful and the most complete.

I have never felt so comfortable with KDE 4, not even when I used KDE 3, that I loved. KDE It has applications for everything I need to do daily and more, it is constantly developing improving its features with each release and that is why it will always have a good place among my favorite desktops.

But… I have a problem in KDE which for me is very serious: I am under-using it. For sure I am not using even half of the things that the German desktop gives us. I eat well I showed you in this post, I have disabled most of the things that do KDE a powerful tool for daily work.

What's the point of using it then? If I don't want to use animations, effects, semantic data, I install Xfce period. Is not that KDE is not suitable for my Hardware, it is my Hardware that is not suitable for KDE. Right now i installed gnome-shell (without removing KDE) and the performance of Gnome it is much worse according to what I could verify.

But what is the difference then? Simple, what gnome-shell it consumes me 360Mb with all your options activated and KDE can consume the same, but rationalizing it previously (removing Nepomuk + Akonadi + Virtuoso + Effects). To that I add that for some reason, the Proxy management in KDE It doesn't work for me as it should and I haven't found any solution for it.

What I am going to do is install again Debian from scratch with gnome-shell to document the process. If everything goes well for me, then perfect, otherwise, I'll go back to KDE or maybe Xfce. Of course yes gnome-shell does not convince me in terms of performance, I will first try to adjust as much as I can to Gnome Fallback.

But I clarify: I love KDE !!! So I will save my settings. Well, nothing, see you in a while, I'll be back with interesting news ... 😀

I was not mistaken when I said: "The good son always comes home", look at it, I have tried many distros, but I always return to Debian with Gnome, hahahahaha.

Well, just installed I boot the system with Gnome-Shell with 66Mb 0_o

Put it again partner, if I approve the other I have to do it with the user Couragw .. 😛

Yes, but in this environment you can't do as much as in KDE, badly you can half-configure it 🙁

      1.    elav <° Linux said

It is true, KDE is very configurable and that is good, although it is often bad. If later you do not remember what you configured in each element, you have to put everything back to Default 😀

I reinstalled from scratch and the same thing happened to me, a dialog box appears that informs me that Gnome Shell was not activated due to graphics or driver problems, I have the integrated graphics chisep and Nvidia is one of the newest, the strange thing is that Testing Fedora 15 and 16 in Live if Gnome Shell works, what kind of cards do you use that works for you?

      1.    elav <° Linux said

Mmm so weird. What NVidia driver are you using? Maybe something generic is loading you (Vesa, Intel ..) and that's why you can't. I have Intel integrated graphics ..

        1.    Oscar said

Xserver-Xorg-video-Nouveau is installed by default for me.

          1.    elav <° Linux said

Exactly .. That driver is crap. You should see if there is a better one for your card, although I can't help you much in that because I don't have much experience with that type of card.

Okay, send me by mail and I'll put it back, I don't remember what I've put

Hi, I found your comments very interesting. I've been testing KDE for a while and you can see all the power it has with the naked eye. However, I am struck by the significantly lower quality of display of the sources compared to Gnome (eg Linux Mint which is what I am using). Even with all possible font settings, they still look worse. Maybe it is only a subjective assessment of mine. That is why I would like to hear your comments about it. a greeting

If you have Gimp the fonts look better

      1.    KZKG ^ Gaara <"Linux said

What does Gimp have to do with fonts?

        1.    elav <° Linux said

Maybe Gimp installs a library that improves font rendering a bit or something like that ...…

        2.    Courage said

Trust me, you who use Arch should know, Arch sources are crap and installing Gimp they look better

          1.    KZKG ^ Gaara <"Linux said

No idea what you're talking about ... the sources look like a bitch @ mother madre

          2.    Courage said

I'll throw you some photos so you can see it.

Anyway you have other sources right?

      Hello there,
      Welcome to our site 🙂

I don't know why by default KDE shows fonts without antialiasing, that is, without font smoothing ... which makes the quality poor. Just install a package (name I can't remember, if you decide to install KDE I promise to do a tutorial for this) and a very simple and basic configuration will be enough to make the fonts look 100% good.

      regards

I call that emotional blackmail .. Come on man, do it without him having to install anything ... ¬¬

  6.   Courage said

Hahahahaha you have to install from scratch hahahahahahahaha

Look, I told you that you have to install the basic KDE

In any case you can try LXDE

    Well I like Gnome 3.2
    It doesn't consume much memory.

On the other hand, Kde, as soon as I open opera pfff it eats all my memory, the Kde
    Removing all the excesses.
Like I love KDE but it's heavy.

Gnome for now on my Arch

  8.   Francisco said

Wow, the debate has been lively. And I have KDE installed, Suse and Kubunto, on different machines. And now, what was promised.

  9.   Edward2 said

Elav, how much did you get paid to speak well of KDE?

    1.    elav <° Linux said

If they had paid me I would still be using it. LOL

      1.    Courage said

Ha, well, they can pay me to talk and use Ubuntu, which I don't do or "tie up"

The solution I think could be to install the proprietary Nvidia but I do not know the procedure. What systems are you using? you do not have it identified.

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Hahaha .. It's true, but nothing, sometimes the User Agent can fool you .. However, maybe this guide can help you:

      https://blog.desdelinux.net/guia-de-instalacion-para-tarjetas-nvidia-en-lmde/

      1.    Oscar said

Thanks friend, it worked correctly, I am in Gnome Shell. Two things in relation to the tutorial, when I restart I do not start the graphical environment, I solved it by starting in rescue mode and executing the following command # nvidia-xconfig and second, when wanting to eliminate the suggested packages, it included the computer suite among others, of course I canceled the process . I hope that if someone has the same problem it can be useful.

        1.    elav <° Linux said

          Excellent!!! ^^

Friend, if you keep trying Gnome Shell I leave you this link where it is how to configure icons, themes, windows and some other things, I hope it will be useful for you.

Right now I write from chakra with kde 4.7.3 and today I was excited in the morning, I had deleted chakra and installed gnome 3.2 (with shell) and what do you want me to tell you, I removed it in less than two hours, although it consumed less ram, with my ati he walks slower with the Duchess of Alba ..

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara <"Linux said

Something similar happens to me ... Gnome yes, it consumes less hardware but I don't feel "at home", that is, I don't have all the comforts that KDE gives me 😀
