Stallman's last day in Argentina

A few days ago the Vía Libre Foundation had announced that Stallman would not return to Argentina due to system implementation SIBIANS whose purpose is to build a biometric database of all those who live, enter or leave the country. Sad news, but it is a decision consistent with his convictions, which we must respect.

As if this were not enough, the talk on Friday 8/5 that he gave at the Faculty of Economic Sciences could not end worse: with the theft of your belongings.

In a paper that he had published on the Vía Libre Foundation website, Stallman said:

It is my ninth and last visit to Argentina. Next Monday, I will leave the country and, without a miracle, I will never see him again.

This expectation makes me sad, because I have many friends in this country, partners in the fight for free software and others. I have known several pleasures, such as the chocolate shops of Bariloche, the mountains of Salta and its sea of clouds, Les Luthiers, Dolina's books, the roasts, the finite and infinite noodles, the Great Free Pension and the Coghlan station bridge . A few months ago, I anticipated continuing to return to Argentina many more times.

Then I received with shock the news of the SIBIOS System, with which they demand the fingerprints of everyone who enters the country. Seeing that news, he thought he would never return to Argentina. There are injustices that we must resist even if it costs. I do not give my fingerprints; they can only pull them out with force. If a country demands them, I don't go.

Later I learned that, for the moment, SIBIOS only works in Buenos Aires. I recognized that it offered me the opportunity for one more visit, entering through another city, and I took advantage of it. So I am here, but the opportunity will not last.

The injustice of demanding biometric data from visitors originated, as badly, in the United States. Shamefully for my country, I recommend that all non-Americans refuse to visit. But this does not justify other countries doing it. "We are not worse than the US" does not excuse anything.

There is a lot of tendency to surveillance in Argentina today. For example, the SUBE card (like similar ones in other cities) registers all use of transport.

In my dreams, the Argentines would eliminate SIBIOS, and SUBE surveillance. If it happens, I can return to visit this country where I have a lot of friendship. But I don't have the strength to launch this fight. It's up to the Argentines.

Being an atheist, I don't say "goodbye." What to say?
Until the miracle, Argentina.

Theft

According to the boys of the Argentine Pirate Party, at the end of the questions and answers of his lecture at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires, Stallman got up to sell the Free Software Foundation pins and keychains again while people huddled and took pictures with him without piss him off. The bag with her belongings was on the side. People would go on stage to take pictures with him and at some point they exchange their purse for an empty one.

He realized that his purse was missing just as a journalist was interviewing him. In it he had: laptop, money, passport, visa, medicines.

Stallman left the conference room hitting his head while saying "shit." The scene ends with Stallman sitting on a step of the main staircase crying.

How angry that a guy I respect takes such negative feelings from my country and my countrymen. All as a consequence of the bad decisions of our political class, the little or no intervention of society as a whole and by the "living" of always whose sole objective was to steal a few things from a poor guy. So sad!

I think you are mixing too much. The government did not invite him. There was an organization responsible for looking after your guest. And they did it wrong. And if I sign a contract with Microsoft, it doesn't seem so serious to me. We have to remember that I also signed contracts with Red Hat, for example. I still think Microsoft is still a necessary evil

All over the world there are thieves estimated, it was a bad place for stallman, the problem is that supposedly people interested in the GNU world go to those conferences and seeing that they happen right there gives us to think more, anyway it comes to me the mind that famous saying that says "the occasion, makes the thief" to all this I had no idea of that SIBIOS system, it seems horrible to me

  3.   Jose rostagno said

Undoubtedly another example that no one is safe from theft. A shame because because of a few we remain before the world as the worst

It is rare to find a solution to the present situation, in any case, in the first place one should have a full vision of where each one is and how their policy works in all fields, conditions should not be imposed for those who do not belong to a certain country as defined by the following: "Stallman would not return to Argentina due to the implementation of the SIBIOS system whose purpose is to build a biometric database of all those who live, enter or leave the country ..." The best example of all this It constitutes it when Linus Torvalds created "the Linux OS", something that the present gentleman has never recognized. The only thing that he has done, that is, that he has designed a kernel for an OS of which he is its creator. Richard Stallman has many complexes, including with Torvalds, from whom he has always drawn his own creations.

What bullshit you released with having the data in the cloud ha ha ha. You have no idea what is behind it.

It is common for Argentines to steal and cheat. Now Stallman will realize what kind of characters he dealt with in that country of liars and thieves.

No. But you are not excluded either that a drugged thief comes (as there are MANY) and puts a gun to your head and kills you for $ 2 or whatever you have in your pocket.
The realities of all countries are complicated, and it is not possible to make comparisons like the one you do. Sons of bitches are everywhere, honest people too.

I correct, I'm not as extreme as Stallman, I would go the same

What a pity about the robbery, I also feel angry. Hey, I would like to ask you about fingerprints, the last time I went to Argentina was in March (2012), since when is it required ????, if I enter through the Los Libertadores pass (Mendoza) they still do not ask for it? ??, The last time I went by plane and arrived in Ezeiza, I suppose they are already registering them, it's a shame, but I am as extreme as Stallman, I will not stop going.

Stallman usually carries a lot of money in that bag (what he raises at conferences). The organization has not been fine.

  11.   José Miguel said

Without a doubt, bad news and although the culprits are the thieves, the organization of the event cannot get out of hand.

A hard lesson that they will have to learn by way of failure.

    Greetings.

What a shame ……. What a shame, here in Colombia we suffer from the same… .. trash people, both thieves and politicians… .. and the rest are powerless or incapable

If it is as the people of p.pirata say, that is to say that they have changed his purse for an empty one with the same characteristics, Linux comrades we are not facing a robbery of a thief, but rather a political attack for which the government is responsible for not guaranteeing the safety of an international benchmark. Of course, a government that deals with monsanto, microsoft or Barrick Gold does not care too much about the integrity of a freedom activist.

What a pity, a bitterness that choreen ... Stallman lacks street, he does not have to have it the same. The goal is to do what it says so we make it come back ... I quote the part that I liked:

Too bad for what happened with RS, a great person a little eccentric hahaha and extremist but very respectable in my opinion, even so I hope it is not RS's last visit to Argentina.

Sorry, but at least you realized how helpful it would have been to have a backup of all your data in the cloud.

There is no doubt that Argentina continues to be hostile territory for free software. The latest government agreement with Microsoft shows this.

I just found out about this news (last visit and robbery of Stallman)! .. What a fury it gives me that poor man who comes with such an important goal for Computer Sovereignty, ended up coming for the last time (at least for now) and above that they rob to him.

To think that when he comes here, the "great" politicians do not give him ball or criticize him: it is called Plan Connect, because of Stallman's criticism of said Program. And then others try to plant a flag with an "SL with Cristina"? I mean, it can't be more incompatible. This man went several times to a Faculty where they give Honoris Causa to characters who are more questioned than anything else, and more than anything in opportune contexts! So… well, draw conclusions !.

I am not saying that what RS says should be done, if it is taken into account and respected. I see him as a SL conservative, exaggerated on certain issues hehe, but even so the things he says he says for a reason.

Honestly hearing the news, it overflowed me ...

What is the political argument? They robbed a guy and I expressed my anger, nothing more. Don't worry ... Nobody spoke about this government, or the insecurity, or the dollars, or Clarín or anything ...
In any case, the only political argument has to do with the implementation of the SIBIOS plan, which must be criticized and to which Stallman himself called our attention.
For more info. I recommend reading the Vía Libre Foundation page about this plan, whose link I attached in another comment.

Emi: I agree with what you say. I love my country and I am proud of it. More than thieves in this case it was about shitty people ... yes, there are also everywhere.
I never said that I was ashamed of being Argentine or whore against my country. I made it very clear that everything was ruined by the "living" (that is, a few) of always.

it is bad news, there is no doubt. But I regret not agreeing on several things. I understand the row, but let's not be alarmists. They steal everywhere and that does not mean that the country is a shitty one. It means there are shitty people, like everywhere. I'm sorry this happened, it's a real shame. It will be necessary to take into account in the events that are organized to take care of the guests with greater care, knowing that living or bad people are everywhere.

I very much agree with Emiliano and Javier. Turning this into a political argument seems to me to exaggerate things too much.

  27.   Javier said

Very sad indeed! It is unfortunate that on his last visit to our country he takes an image as bad as this, because of what you say, the "living" as always.
