The European Commission signed the ACTA

Thursday January 26 2012 will be remembered as the day the European Commission and Member States of the European Union, signed ACT. I mean, the day they made it clear that people's opinion doesn't matter a damn.

The signing ceremony was held in Japan, the depositary country of the treaty. Although it is definitely a brutal abuse of power by unelected representatives of the European Commission, this does not mean that the ACTA chapter has reached the final.

ACTA is an international treaty, in the name against "counterfeit" but in practice it has consequences similar to SOPA.

Parliamentary Minister Marietje Schaake published today in Reddit a message explaining that the European Parliament will have to ratify the treaty anyway.

The signing of ACTA is simply a commitment without legal validity acquired by the negotiating countries. The signature expresses an intention to implement the treaty but in no way amounts to its adoption or ratification.

According to MP Shaake, as of the signing of ACTA, the different committees of the European Parliament will have to express their opinion in this regard and debate them in plenary on February 29 and March 1. Between April and May, INTA, the International Trade Commission will also vote.

It is relevant that INTA conducted an ACTA study that reveals that "unconditional consent to the treaty would be an inappropriate response" since it does not represent any benefit for citizens.

Access Now is trying collect half a million signatures of European citizens who oppose ACTA… participate!
