The release of Gnome 3.38 has already been announced and these are its news

After several months of development, The Gnome team is pleased to announce the release of the new version of the desktop environment "Gnome 3.38" Compared to the previous version, around 28 thousand changes were made, in the implementation of which 901 developers participated.

Of the main novelties that are presented in this new version, is that the separate sections proposed above for all frequently used applications have been replaced by a summary view which allows applications to be reorganized and distributed in folders created by the user.

Dragging and dropping applications is done by moving the mouse while holding the button to click.

Another change that we can notice immediately in this new version of Gnome 3.38 is the welcome walkthrough displayed when user logs in for the first time after completing the initial setup. The interface summarizes information about the main features of the desktop and offers an introductory tour with an explanation of the working principles. The application is written in Rust.

In the configurator, in the user administration section, now you can set parental controls for regular accounts. For a given user, you can prevent certain installed programs from appearing in the application lists. Parental control it is also integrated into the Application Installation Manager and allows to allow installation of only selected programs.

The configurator presents a new fingerprint scanning interface for authentication with fingerprint sensors.

Added option to block activation of USB devices unauthorized members connected during screen lock.

Screencasting tools in GNOME Shell have been redesigned to use the PipeWire media server and the Linux kernel API to reduce resource consumption and improve responsiveness while recording.

The Gnome Maps has been adapted for use on smartphones. In satellite image display mode, the ability to display marks is provided. Added support for enabling map view in night mode.

Fractal, a client of the decentralized communications platform Matrix, has improved video playback by viewing message history; video preview thumbnails now display directly in message history and expand to full video on click.
