The new version of the Geary 0.13 email client has been released

After a year and a half of development, the new version of Geary 0.13 was released. This is an email client focused on use in the GNOME environment.

Initially, the project was founded by the organization of the Yorba Foundation, which created the popular Shotwell photo manager, but further development passed to the GNOME community. Geary's code is written in Vala and distributed under the LGPL license.

The goal of project development is to create a product rich in capabilities, but at the same time extremely simple to use and consumes a minimum of resources.

The mail client is designed for separate use and to work in conjunction with web-based email services such as Gmail and Yahoo! Mail.

The interface is implemented using the GTK3 + library.  A SQLite database is used to store the message base and a full-text index is created to search the message base.

To work with IMAP, a new GObject-based library is involved that operates in asynchronous mode (mail download operations do not crash the interface).

Geary main features.

Geary has support to create and view email messages, send and receive email, the function of sending a reply to all respondents and forwarding messages.

Within its interface includes a WYSIWYG editor to create messages using HTML markup (enabled by webkitgtk), with support for spell checking, font selection, highlighting, link insertion, indentation, etc.

Another strong point of this email client is that it has features for grouping messages by discussion. As well as various ways of displaying messages in discussions.
So far only a consistent view of the posts is available in the discussion, but a tree with a visual selection of threads will soon appear.

A useful feature is that you can immediately see the previous and next message in the discussion (messages scroll through a continuous tape), which is very convenient when reading mailing lists. For each message, the number of responses is displayed.

Main news Geary 0.13

Geary

In this new version of Geary 0.13 the developers proposed a new interface for creating and managing accounts. IIntegrated with the GNOME Online Account Service to add accounts centrally for all GNOME applications.

The improved interface also received support for writing letters. Added support for ordered and unsorted lists, improved insertion of text from clipboard with markup, remembering window size.

In this new release, support for authentication using OAuth was added as well as support for improved discussion topics and faster loading. Added the ability to delete individual posts in discussions.

The ability to control via hotkeys was included. For example, Ctrl + N to write a message, Ctrl + R for a reply, Ctrl + Shift + R to reply to all participants, Del to put the mail in the archive.

Full support for IMAP and message synchronization tools and full compatibility with popular IMAP servers, including Dovecot, were included in this release.

Of the other improvements that we can highlight we find the following:

  • Better interaction with other mail applications.
  • It ensured the correct update of the unread messages of the counter.
  • Internal links work has been established in letters with HTML markup.
  • In the naked text (plain text) view, the correct text formatting with markup has been implemented.
  • Improved design issue notifications, such as the inability to connect to the server.
  • Reduced CPU load during background sync.
  • Better handling of network connection state change (switch to online and offline modes).
