Firefox Reality will live on now under “Wolvic”,

The launch of the new version of Wolvic 1.5 was announced, which boasts of being a great update, since several improvements have been integrated into the user interface, in addition to various improvements, bug fixes and more.

For those who are not familiar with the browser, I can tell you that the project continues the development of the Firefox Reality browser, previously developed by Mozilla, since the browser uses the GeckoView web engine, a variant of Mozilla's Gecko engine packaged as a separate library that can be updated independently.

LManagement is carried out through a three-dimensional user interface fundamentally different, allowing navigation through sites within the virtual world or as part of augmented reality systems.

In addition to a helmet-controlled 3D interface that lets you view traditional 2D pages, web developers can use the WebXR, WebAR, and WebVR APIs to create custom 3D web applications that interact in virtual space. It also supports viewing space videos taken in 360-degree mode on a 3D headset.

Main novelties of Wolvic 1.5

In the new version that is presented of Wolvic 1.5, the browser engine Gecko and Mozilla Android components have been updated to version 116, corresponding to Firefox 116.0.3, along with the support for the OpenXR XR_EXTX_overlay extension to compose together with other OpenXR applications.

Regarding the new features, the improved “Search” feature in on-page UI, in which the ability to search for text on a page was implemented. Automatic selection of a search engine based on the user's country is also provided, if the user does not explicitly set the search engine in the settings.

Another change that stands out is that New realistic 3D models have been added to visually track hand movements, making them more like real hands when manipulating objects. To render the hand motion model, the OpenXR extension XR_MSFT_hand_tracking_mesh is used, if supported by the system. Correct matching of actions on the VR controller with tracking of hand movements is ensured.

In addition to this, it is also highlighted that they have been added new date and time pickers through a dialog box that allows you to fill in the date and time.

Also, another of the new features that Wolvic 1.5 presents is the support for YouTube subtitles, In addition, AppleTV playback has been adjusted and automatic protection selection for YouTube virtual reality videos has been re-enabled.

Of the other changes that stand out of this new version:

  • Fixed white flickering that appeared when frames were dropped at low FPS.
  • Completed a major codebase overhaul, including updating legacy APIs.
  • Enabled support for downloads from “blob://” URLs and browsing the local file system when opening a “file://” URL.
  • Added support for the Magic Leap 2 VR controller.
  • A new edition of the browser has been proposed for basic devices provided in AOSP (Android Open Source Project) based on arm64 and x64 architectures.
  • Updated code to detect changes in wireless network status.
  • An alternative backend based on the Chromium engine implements an “Incognito” mode, adds support for processing downloads via DownloadManagerDelegate, and provides muting of inactive tabs.

Finally if you are interested in knowing more about it, you should know that Wolvic's code is written in Java and C++ and is released under the MPLv2 license.

For those interested in being able to test the browser, you should know that they are offered packages in finished sets for Android and that work with Oculus 3D headsets, Huawei VR Glass, HTC Vive Focus, Pico Neo and Lynx is supported (the browser is also being ported for Qualcomm and Lenovo devices).
