OpenMailBox: the best email on the planet

Looking for a free email service I came across Open mailbox. Maybe some already know it. Despite the limited resources available to the project, of French origin, I must say that it is the best email service on the planet.

OpenWebMail

More than one will think that I am exaggerating, well not in the terms that I will present now.

The service:

  • It is developed with free software
  • Supports IMAP, POP, WEBMAIL, CHAT (JABBER), OWNCLOUD (1G) (includes calendar) and temporary accounts.
  • It supports French, English and Spanish.
  • It does not force payments, but it certainly needs donations to function.
  • The registration system for their use is not invasive of privacy, and IP addresses are not stored.
  • It certainly uses secure connections.
  • Its web interface is impeccable.

OpenMailBox.org

So far the description of a service that, from what has been said, has no opponent based on what it offers and the philosophy with which it makes it a reality: free software. It's like an exorcised Gmail, free of demons.

Now yes, why the title of this article? Because this project is carried out by a single person who is barely 16 years old and it is my surprise and my enormous satisfaction with the service that leads me to write this article.

Sustaining OpenMailbox over time will depend on many variables, even unrelated to its founder, but it certainly shows that free mail is possible and above all desirable. He has suffered a denial of service attack these days but is back on his feet.

So if you are interested in having an account with the best email service on earth, just create it and enjoy it.

At the moment of receiving the mail in the part where it says sender, the icon of a person with the + symbol appears from there you can add it to your contacts in this mail client .. I just did it since I just created my account 😀 and it looks good hopefully that its diffusion grows and that it matures much more and by the way that it has a long life ..

I do not mean to add contacts ... But to add another email account of mine to download the messages from it in OpenMailBox.

        1.    Dark purple said

Yes, but I prefer to log in to check my mail and then log out, it is not something that I will consult daily.

      3.    Alice said

Yes, I think you can import your mail if the server allows it. Gmail allows it. You configure it from Gmail, Settings: forwarding and POP IMAP mail, there you add that it is forwarded to your openmailbox account. I just did it and it is already working.

        1.    Dark purple said

Well, that may be valid for some, but it is not ideal ...
What I would like is for OpenMailBox to connect to another email account and download the messages via POP3. GMail does not expire, but Outlook and Yahoo do, and if I configure mail to be forwarded to my OpenMailBox account, after a while without logging in to those services, my account will be deleted. On the other hand, if OpenMailBox connects to them they would not delete my accounts.

He immediately fixes any problems you may have and is always improving and increasing services. A couple of weeks ago the owncloud thing came out, a month ago, it added the Jabber / XMPP service… Today it has presented a new logo for the service!

    1.    bapgnu said

In fact, there is no server connected to the internet that is not being scanned by the NSA in one way or another. The key here is to use crypto, there is no other way to protect yourself. NO SERVICE can guarantee your privacy, since, and this was proven, if they do not grant access to the intelligence services, they turn them off, as happened with lavabit.

      Greetings.

      1.    Dark purple said

But as I understand it, those who are obliged to give data to the NSA are the companies / servers that are in the US, or have I missed something?

        1.    Cost Granda said

It is like this, for the NSA to have access to servers in another country it needs to follow due process and it can be denied, but that goes in each country

          1.    Dark purple said

And does France give them permission?

      2.    They all add up to 23 ... said

No, they don't turn them off. Autistici's servers are in 3 of the countries that have the best laws on the right to privacy and freedom of communications: Iceland, Norway and I can't remember if it was the Netherlands or Sweden. As a note, say that for example Mega or the Mailpile encrypted mail project, have chosen Iceland as the country in which to base their data centers, and for example Wikileaks chose Sweden to escape the NSA. To turn them off, they would have to get permission from an Icelandic court, another Norwegian, and another from Sweden, all at the same time, because the data is redundant, and no matter how much they shut down the servers in a data center, the other two would continue to work.

Obviously the gringos can try methods outside the legal channels, for something they are spies, and hack their servers, that is why Autistici recommends that the read mail be deleted or downloaded to our computers, because it is true that there is nothing perfectly safe, and less if it is on the Internet. But the Openmailbox servers are in France, and as Pierre Barre himself has admitted French law is a dud:
        https://www.openmailbox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5

But come on, as a "crappy" email, for things not very important I have also opened a couple of accounts in OPMBX, and I am delighted. For serious mail, Autistici.

      3.    A visitor said

"If they do not grant access to the intelligence services, they turn them off, as happened with lavabit."

That is why the founder of Lavabit himself said that no web service located in the US should be used. The North American courts do not have jurisdiction in Europe, so that the servers are in Europe is already something, but it is true that with a phone call from Obama any European leader will drop his pants and have a judge issue a search warrant for those servers who are supposedly safe from gringo clutches.
Servers such as those of various free mail services encrypt the data on your disks, Openmailbox uses LUKS, but of course, if a French judge orders you to give the encryption keys to your administrator, he is obliged to give them, or he faces jail , so yes, it is best to encrypt them ourselves, and also, as recommended in several sites, DOWNLOAD THE MAIL and delete it from the server, a detail that no one takes into account because IMAP or web interfaces are very good to be able to see the mail there wherever we go and from various devices, but the best way not to spy on our mail over the Internet is that it is not on the Internet but at home.

I have my Openmailbox account for a year and I use it as the default email.
The big problem is that when you send an email to someone who has Hotmail / Outlook, the email always reaches SPAM or Junk Mail, even if you mark it as No-spam, it still arrives there.
So this is uncomfortable when sometimes you have to send a very important communication or for work matters, because if they don't check their SPAM, they simply won't see the email.

The service is very good, the speed is fast. I have it synchronized with K-9 Mail on my Android and it works wonders. The best thing is that if you have any questions, you can send an email to Pierre Barré (in French or English) and he will respond immediately. One day I asked him something by email and not a minute passed and he had already answered me. Let's see if Gmail is going to do something like that ...

A warning, last Friday Openmailbox was the victim of a DDOS attack, the service was down all day, on Saturday there was also a problem. According to Pierre Barré, he has already fixed the problem and installed a protection system against these attacks, hopefully it will work well in the future.

PS: The fact that it is developed 100% with free software does not mean that it is free software. Where is the Openmailbox source code? As long as we don't have the source code, it can't be 100% trusted.

    1.    bapgnu said

Hi Eduardo. What you comment regarding spam is more of a problem with the other services than with openmailbox, it could even be intentional. Regarding free software, I may be wrong, but I doubt that there is code production in this project, rather it seems the implementation of existing software. In any case, it would be essential that it be published if it exists.
And it's true, it responds quickly to inquiries ... it is not an automatic response ... another point in favor of this service that I forgot to mention.

      Greetings.

    2.    9 said

Does anyone know how to fix that spam when you send messages to hotmail accounts, my messages to other hotmail accounts did not have that problem, now all my messages sent to outlook or hotmail accounts, live etc. are they going to spam or just don't even reach the recipient: / Can there be a solution to that?

      1.    A visitor said

Tell Hotmail users the truth, that their email service is shit and that you are not going to break your head if they have chosen a provider that emails do not reach, so if they want to continue writing with you they have to change, even if it is to Gmail, GMX, Yahoo or any other proprietary and spy provider, but at least with censoring emails because they simply do not "like" such provider.
And when I say "get serious" I mean it. Many acquaintances, since they know that we know more about the subject than they do, do not say "it has not reached me" or "it does not work for me" with the idea that we will solve the problem for them. No, you have to end that bad habit. If they use systems and services of companies that voluntarily violate standards, they create their own rules, intentionally block services and software that may be a nuisance, even if it is small, for those companies, that adhere to their decision as users and are responsible for the consequences that they imply. The idea of “if I have a problem with Windows / Hotmail / Word / etc, nothing happens, because my friend Fulanito understands computers and solves it for me, or he explains it to me so that I can solve it easily is good. Do you really think that MS would have even a tenth of the users it has if every time its products caused problems, users had to pay for a technical computer service? Ha! Those of us who for decades have been "helping" (if it is helping to help our acquaintances continue to be imprisoned by computer) every time our girlfriend's printer failed, every time our friend got a virus, every time his brand new Windows had slowed down to a relative in less than a year until he went on pedals ... Anyway, you all know what I mean. If Microsoft hadn't had that worldwide army of free workers, today I don't think it would be the most used home OS.
Let's not do the same with Hotmail / Outlook, if it works badly, it works badly, and your users must change instead of protesting. Ball point. Free help, for users of free products and systems, not for products that make billions each year for a few large Anglo-American shareholders and managers.

    3.    Sergio S. said

Eduardo, I have the same concern. From this blog they have recommended the OpenMailBox email service as something great, but I have not seen the link where the source code is published. And that is a serious security mistake. I've already created the account there, and I like it and it's fast. But I really don't know whether to trust a 16-year-old (apparently) who runs all this from (his home?). You may be a computer "whiz", but if you can't come up with the money to keep the project alive, goodbye to all our messages.
Could you comment a little more about Openmabilbox security from this blog?

Investigating I found https://tutanota.com/, It is an apparently similar service, but with a team behind it and with the source code available. Besides that it offers an app on Android.
What opinion do you have about Tutanota?

What could this platform offer me that Gmail does not already offer?

Just to say that it is free software… I support free software in other ways, although the project sounds interesting, and it is worth supporting. For a common user, I do not see what benefits it can provide.

      1.    Martin said

And who assures if Openmailbox actually respects privacy? Do you only trust because they say it on their website? In other words, Gmail would also be reliable because according to them "they also respect privacy"?
Who knows if Openmailbox is a hidden project of the NSA (hosted in France) to capture activists or terrorists looking for a service with "privacy"?

        1.    bapgnu said

Of course there are no certainties about it. It is plausible that this is so. I would say that the difference is that in gmail we have the certainty that the emails will be read by google, for commercial purposes, I hope, and by the NSA god knows for what purposes. With opeamailbox we simply do not have that certainty. In probabilistic terms in gmail the probability that they are read is 100%, in openmailbox 50%. I would say that this is the important difference between one service and the other. My friends at this point it is very difficult to trust any service ... luckily it can always be encrypted 🙂
          Greetings.

          1.    Lucas said

Exact. In Google it is already proven with evidence that privacy does not exist, thanks to the Snowden leaks. On the other hand, in openmailbox nobody has shown anything.

Pd: as long as something is on the Internet, nothing is secure anymore, and much less if it is on a server that is not ours.

Pierre Barre, the creator and administrator, has had a certain relevance in France, he has even appeared on a TV program, with which it was discovered that he works for the US and only he would be pointed out as responsible. That's no guarantee, but it inspires a little more confidence.
But I agree a little with you, and I prefer to focus on an anarchist group like Autistici.org, not because they necessarily have to share their ideology, but because their trajectory has shown for more than a decade that they are not exactly with «the system".

        3.    They all add up to 23 ... said

Because if it is true that it only uses free software, everyone who is dedicated to that world knows the programs it uses and what they do exactly because they have read its code and even work developing it. That is, it is known what Owncloud does, it is known what Roundcube does, it is known what Apache does, etc. With closed source programs, no one knows what it really does, because no one can read its "instructions" other than the developers, and not everyone, because the normal thing is that the team in charge of an aspect does not know the code that the team develops in charge of another aspect.

But you are right that one cannot trust someone's word because yes, that is why there are several users who have asked him to publish absolutely everything, even the configuration files, and until he requests to be audited by some body that guarantees that everything he says is true. for example in this thread:
          https://www.openmailbox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=370

So although it gives me more confidence than commercial mail servers, I am with you that it takes more than word to trust a service of this type.

But is there a way to sustain it by mounting your own server and storage capacity yourself? Well, if that is viable, it could be a great project in the future, something like a debian project

    1.    A visitor said

Man, mail servers have been installed on home servers practically since e-mail was invented. In fact, the "cloud" that includes OPMBX uses Owncloud software, which was originally intended for home servers. Of course, everyone can set up their own server, the problem is that you have to learn how to do it and maintain it: you have to update more frequently than the computer for normal use, because being permanently on connected to the Internet, and with a fixed IP, It is more exposed to attacks and failures, but above all, we must accept that if it is turned off, we will run out of mail, even if they write to us and within a short time the message could not be delivered to our server, it is discarded. But come on, if you are willing to learn, and to have the computer that you use as a server on all day, or at least most of it, of course you can set up your own server, not only for mail, but also for files, for chat, etc.

  18.   Daniel said

OPMBX has exactly the same as Autistici plus 1 gigabyte free in the cloud with Owncloud, but on the contrary it is not as demanding on privacy (its servers are in France, much more invasive in its legislation than Iceland or Norway, where Autistici has its servers, It does not allow the use of email address aliases, nor in case of forgetting the password it allows to recover the accounts through a secondary email address. So yes, the owner seems false, exaggerated and misinformed. Besides, only one The person runs the whole project, Pierre Barre, unlike a whole group behind Autistici, but it is true that it is infinitely more recommended than Gmail.

    1.    Daniel said

By the way, its interface is only the Roundcube application, the same one used by Autistici and other similar emails.

    2.    bapgnu said

Hello Daniel. Following your last two contributions to this article I will say the following.
Contrary to your vision, I trust a person more than a group of anarchists, regardless of whether or not you agree with their ideas. It also seems extortionate to give you the service if you agree with them or not. Regarding the web interface, nowhere in the article did I say that it was a creation of openmailbox. The title is not the one I gave the article, the editors changed it, even so I maintain that it is the best service from what I said at the beginning; the original title referred to the barre age.
Regarding the legislation of each country, this has a relative importance, especially considering that these days a serious flaw in open ssl was known. Why? If you are in the American continent (I cannot verify it from another continent) you will see, use the service you use, that before reaching the corresponding server all our traffic goes through a US server. Make a traceroute to the Autistici servers and you will check it. The flaw is time consuming and highly likely the NSA has been exploiting it for this entire time.
      Greetings.

The fact that the mail is in safer countries does not make it become a secure medium (maybe Startmail or Mailpile have to say something about that * when they are operational, although I think both will be paid), but, as the commenter you were replying to comments, I also think that the headline is a bit exaggerated: there are mail providers similar to Openmailbox, and even better. Another thing is that it is admirable that a 16-year-old boy, instead of spending all day playing the game console and masturbating, as is usually done at those ages, xD, has started to develop an entire email and storage provider on the cloud. Olé sus huev * s, of course it is, but no, it's not the best mail on the planet, far from it.

Greetings and congratulations for the blog.

By the way, I was reading about what you say about anarchists ... They do not say that you have to follow their similar creed (although I sympathize with some ideas of serious anarchism, not the "flute", I am not and have never been an anarchist, and I have been 4 years using my email in Autistici without anyone having come to ask me for the membership card of an anarchist union), simply that your email is not used for sexist, racist activities and such.
And about the confidence that they inspire in you… Well, everyone is free to trust whoever they think best, but Autistici has been working for 12 years and a group of people maintain it. If tomorrow Pierre Barre breaks up with his girlfriend, or gets sick, or any other eventuality, who takes over? As far as I know there is no one but him behind Openmailbox.
No, male orchestras are very curious and it has a lot of merit that they do everything by themselves, but for serious things, it is better that each instrument have its performer, if the conductor gets sick, someone else can replace him, but the orchestra is still there. So, for the moment, I would not recommend OPMBX more than as a secondary account for things of little value, but the mail with our family, our close friends, our doctor or our affairs with the Public Administration, I do not think it should be taken into a provider subject to the whims of legislation as disrespectful as the French.

In addition, the fact that Autistici is an organization driven by its leftist ideology and not by money (Pierre Barre has already said in the OPMBX forum that he is going to start offering payment accounts, which does not seem bad, eye, but there is already an economic interest, not just an ideological one) it should be a guarantee point that they work to get away from the clutches of the System more than other people who do not feel that personal aversion in their convictions towards said system.
Let me recommend reading this that happened to Autistici. The translation is a bit in "Spanish", but it is perfectly understood:
        http://www.autistici.org/ai/crackdown/comunicato_es_210605.html

Do you know what the Autistici did? Leaving Italy, the association, I mean, not that its members emigrated, hehe. They moved their data centers to countries with more civilized laws. Right now in Italy I think they only have the headquarters, in which there is not a single server. So I do trust an organization that, in the face of the first pressures from State agencies, escapes to keep its users' data out of the hands of that State.

        Greetings.

        1.    bap said

Be careful, maybe the use I made of the word anarchist sounded pejorative, rereading it was not my intention. I have no basis to say whether they are reliable or not, nor do I have them for Barre. Trust is subjective and tied to many variables. Perhaps tomorrow, either of the two services, for whatever reason, will not hold it anymore, there are no guarantees about it. That is why it is a good practice not to leave information on the servers, which is not a guarantee of anything because the info can be copied before being downloaded by the user. And, as I said in a previous post, the legislation is not a choice for intelligence agencies. They do not even need to enter a server, wherever it is, since, at least in the American continent, all the traffic that goes and comes from other continents passes through the United States, at which point, most likely, they will check the luggage 🙂
Certainly as soon as it becomes a commercial service, I will be the first to delete my accounts. What was attractive to me about this project is that it starts something good, which may or may not be called open mail box, but that we began to get used to having a service with excellent features, easy to access and free. Of course, the latter is not fully met and this will be decisive for it to become something really good or simply another commercial product of which there are so many.

Tor mail is just a client like it, it is not a server like gmail or hotmail, so this comes in handy. Likewise, the best thing is to encrypt all the emails you send and send emails only to people who also encrypt theirs if you don't want them to read your emails

In openmailbox if you forget your password you will have lost everything, and this Pierre Barre will not even bother to answer you why ...

I have tried the mail, and it does not seem very practical, lately I have had many difficulties to enter due to server failures. On the other hand, I have also had problems sending emails. Also, it does not allow you to add other email accounts and respond from it, as if you enable gmail. And I must add, that the inbox is not the first screen that is enabled, so when I start I must choose to see mail.

I would rate it as 2/5

How strange, apart from the fact that it does not have an email collector for other accounts, the rest that accounts has never happened to me, and I have been with OPMBX since April. And of course, as soon as you log in, you enter your inbox. Are you sure you haven't been messing around with the settings and that's why it does those weird things to you?
It works perfectly for me, although I also believe that it has some shortcomings, but if you visit its forum you will see that the administrator listens to the requests of the users (not all, I suppose, because a single person, and in addition to 16 years, I imagine that between studies and adolescent life, little, I suppose, she must not have much time to attend to everyone)
I encourage you to write exposing your problems. If Pierre himself does not answer, surely someone else will.

Any android app to manage openmailbox mail?

      K9:

If what you are looking for is an exclusive application for OPMBX, I think there isn't one.

Although they are related terms and we usually use them interchangeably, Free Software and Open Source do not share the same characteristics.

Free Software or Free Software in English is software that respects the four freedoms that the FSF establishes:

The freedom to use the program, for any purpose.
The freedom to study how the program works and modify it, adapting it to your needs.
The freedom to distribute copies of the program, with which you can help your neighbor.
The freedom to improve the program and make those improvements public to others, so that the entire community benefits.

Open Source or open source, is the expression by which freely distributed and developed software is known. It is a more pragmatic movement, it focuses more on the practical benefits such as access to source code than on the ethical or freedom aspects that are so relevant in Free Software.

Its premise is that by sharing the code, the resulting program tends to be of superior quality to proprietary software, it is a technical vision. Obviously, to achieve technical quality, the ideal is to share the code, but you are not obliged to do so.

    Differences

The Free Software movement emphasizes ethical and moral issues related to software, seeing the technical aspect as secondary, unlike the Open Source movement that establishes it as a priority, this being its biggest difference.

Another of its differences, the commercial field, is that with an application developed under Free Software standards it is possible to obtain remuneration for development, support and tuning concepts as long as you deliver the sources, unlike the Open Source movement that it doesn't force you to do it. All products developed in Free Software as well as its derivatives must always be free, unlike Open Source.

Roundcube, defines itself as Open Source Webmail Project.
As for the real situation of Roundcube Encryption, it is possible to access it from this limk: http://trac.roundcube.net/wiki/Dev_Encryption

    A fragment:
    Encryption
Email encryption is a ubiquitous topic and unfortunately Roundcube does not yet offer a solution for secure email communication using end-to-end encryption. There are many reasons why we are not offering this yet, some points among many of them are:

Lack of agreement on the best way to make this possible.
Browsers are a closed and insecure environment.
    Servers cannot be trusted.

The subject is broad, but my English is scarce.

    Unfortunately nothing is certain.
Just in case I also have an OpenMailBox account.

I make this mention so that they do not trust, that there is more than one there waiting for anyone to slip.

Does anyone have a photo or some note from the internet where it can be proven that this Pierre Barre really exists? Coincidentally, his service arises immediately after closing the lavabit service, he is giving me a paranoia crisis: O

    1.    A visitor said

xD. Well, some reason is not missing. Up there they say that he has been interviewed on French TV, but if searching the Internet there is not a single photo of him, of course I do not know more than 4 words of French and perhaps in Spanish there is no graphic information but in French yes, no I know.
I said, you have to encrypt the mail, delete it as soon as it is read, if it is not something that we should keep, and what we want to keep download it with a good email client like Kmail or Thunderbird. And even so, we do not know what the time spent on the servers could have done with our mail, but if it was encrypted a bit more relaxed we can be.

Bitmessage does not use servers but works peer to peer, like Bittorrent or eMule. I do not know much about the subject, but it seems quite safe, the problem is that it also seems quite complicated:

    Greetings.
For reporting, there is a questionable issue with OpenMailBox mail and time has passed and it has not been fixed.
It turns out that when writing a new message, and using the type of HTML Editor, there are serious problems that you do not realize when you write the text, if not when you already review the message in the sent ones, or you see it from the account where it is you sent.
Something like this is what you send, absolutely all the formatting and characters with accents fail:
"Font-size: small;"> This admission process was carried out by Mr. Tal y Pascual, who kindly collaborated with us. I also attach a document ... ".

Unfortunately they have not solved it. I would prefer that the owner of this service (which surprises me is 16 years old), please disable the HTML Editor, which works very badly, and misleads the user. The Simple Editor, very simple to use these days.
I wonder, what are the drawbacks that a good HTML Editor cannot consume.

Seeing that the person in charge of this service is a 16-year-old girl, I totally reject the idea of opening an email in this domain. I applaud this boy's initiative while also looking for a reliable service and, at that age, emotional outbursts are the order of the day. Who am I entrusting my email to?

    I wish you luck!
