About the steam license on linux

Valve launched your client to Linux focusing on Ubuntu, distribution that has the largest market share in terms of Linux desktops, focusing on adequate support for this distribution as one of its priorities.

In the days that the beta was available as a binary for Ubuntu / Debian (.deb) it was almost immediately reported that it worked on other Linux distributions. Some distros have started packaging their own client binary for their own platforms, but there are some concerns about what is being done, at least since Arch Linux.

Serving Ubuntu users is their top priority, Valve released the beta only as a .deb package. Developers from other distributions wanted to have Steam on their own distribution and make life easier for players, so they started creating their own packages. One of the first distributions to do this was Arch Linux, where the customer was repackaged. However, concerns have been raised, whether what is being done is legal or not.

On a new Arch mailing list about having Steam in your repositories, an Arch Linux developer is concerned about repackaging the client without explicit permission from Valve:

“I just realized that Steam was put in the multilib repository, it is a shame that this kind of dubious packages are put in the repos without any prior discussion (as with the Catalyst drivers) my concern here is the license. we modify and distribute Steam, which is probably not allowed according to section 1.B from Valve's license, so unless I'm wrong, there must be written permission from Valve, or else remove this package immediately. "

Part of what concerns about the Steam license boils down to the following:

«You may not, in whole or in part, copy, reproduce, translate, reverse engineer (with the exception of specific circumstances permitted by law), derivations of the source code, modify, disassemble, decompile or create derivative works based on the program, remove any proprietary notices or labels from the program, or attempt in any way to circumvent any security measures designed to control access to this program »

The developer who repackaged Steam for Arch Linux claims that contacted 2 people from valve by e-mail:

"Only after contacting 2 people at valve, who gave me the go-ahead to distribute Steam, only then did I put it in the repository."

However, even with the e-mails, it was decided that is not sufficient. They were just the Steam Linux developers approved by the legal department, and the consent was not explicit enough. It has been proposed that for now, Steam be removed from the repositories as a preventive measure.

Before anyone thinks this is an "Ubuntu-only" approach, the license is the same on all platforms, Valve is well aware that the linux world does not start or end with Ubuntu, Gabe Newell and his Linux engineers stated earlier this year that they would not exclude non-users from Ubuntu.

Gabe hates Windows 8, and his company is taking Linux as the next gaming platform very seriously, currently the Steam beta on Linux is available for a thousand participants, but it is expected that in the future this situation will be clarified.

LOL they give them a decent gaming platform after such a long time for their beloved linux and they start arguing about licenses xD

I find the attitude of the "package manager" quite interesting: he has become the good boy so that steam sees them with good eyes and in the future they will wink at arch linux

Of course, it is very good that they have developed a version for Linux, it is really wonderful for the community, but we must remember that it is a company that has to protect its source code, I have nothing against that and it is their right. we (linux users) more than anyone know that repackaging steam binaries is a blessing for less expert users (I include myself: P) the problem is that the valve legal department could not look at it like that, they see that the statutes in the license agreement are followed and an attorney is not exactly benevolent.

Valve has to think it through to reach the Linux world.

    1.    medina07 said

I think that the GNU / Linux distributions should do it….
Let me explain: within the GNU / Linux world it is customary and based on the types of licenses to take this or that development and modify it, copy it, etc., but there are companies that have other types of more closed licenses which must be respected because not everything is there for us to take it and do what we please based on the fact that «Ah! this is Linux and if it is not free then I am not interested ».
Everything has parameters, limits and there are things that ethically must be respected.
The community was crying out for a decent client for games ... well, they already have one, only there are rules to be respected and the least each distribution can do is study the license and if the case warrants, enter into communication with those responsible for the company at question and agree ... a mere formal matter.

      1.    helena_ryuu said

Exactly, I'm sure that Valve would be happy to have its client in all the distros (it means more games sold) but there is a license to respect and it is as Medina07 says a protocol act and it is only a matter of agreeing, to avoid later complaints or problems, in addition, they even have to work less because other developers of each distro pack the binary.
Anyway, this is not a bar but rather shows that in Linux things are taken with caution and in fact there are people who do read the licenses xD

"Jugones in Arch" would sound like a pure contradiction, and yet they move. And the Steam package for Linux repackaged for Arch by this time should already be installed on all archery gaming machines.

A fix, _not repackaged_, the PKGBUILD was simply added to the AUR repository which is a repository that users contribute to but not officially endorsed by the distribution.

The PKGBUILD files are simple scripts that, like the Gentoo EBUILDs or the FreeBSD ports system, contain instructions on how to download the sources, compile, install, etc.

In this particular case, what the PKGBUILD does is download the .DEB that is used in Ubuntu, make some minor modifications to the installation to accommodate Arch, unzip the .DEB (which is nothing more than a tar with extra info) and dump it to the destination directory.

      Greetings.

arqu is much more efficient than ubuntu ubuntu is leeeento XD, like any windows so therefore you have to take advantage of windows 8 promotions, I do not hate windows 8, I do not want it but they say it is faster, and if it runs better games, come on, it's stupid that they charge you for the media, I don't know that, if it's something for which nobody pays more than the cost of the hardware ... —games in Arch ”would sound like a pure contradiction—, it's not true there is a gamers distro on Arch, and it runs pretty well on a flashdrive. but the games are very limited. I'm not at all advanced but I have installed arch because of how fast it is and in several arch-based distros there are many people taking care of the games to run, they just need…. steam and origin XD by the bf3

The term "gamer" is quite sad and if we think about it, it's embarrassing 😛

And you, what do you do with your life? And ... I'm a "gamer", I spend my time playing computer games .. xD
      Ahhh, look at you ...

      1.    helena_ryuu said

LoL, although I have seen people feel proud of being called that…. and they say things like «…. You're not a gamer, you don't understand it »with a proud face… .. (real experience)

And the truth is if it is ashamed, one day the teacher in an introductory programming class asked "how many are studying this because they like games?" Almost everyone raised their hand and I (o_o) and they all saw me badly like «what's wrong with this? She's wrong, look at her, she doesn't play on the computer »xDD

          Hello Helena!
«LoL, although I have seen people feel proud of being called that…. and they say things like “…. You are not a gamer, you do not understand ”with a proud face… .. (real experience)»
          But what assholes, man!

«And the truth is if it is ashamed, one day the teacher in an introductory programming class asked" how many are studying this because they like games? " Almost everyone raised their hand and I (o_o) and they all saw me badly like “what's wrong with this? She's wrong, look at her, she doesn't play on the computer ”xDD»
Look, I do like computer games -maybe because I'm a man, I don't know-, it's not that they bother me, not even there, what really makes me ashamed of others is that someone can be so dominated as to say that they are a «Gamer» ... I mean, you tell me that you are a gamer and my mental image of you is that of Ungenio González ...

As a child I spent hours in the files, Wonderboy, Out Run, Double Dragon, Golden Ax, Operation Wolf ... puff, what do I know, I have played thousands, the same with my 8-bits compus: Timex Sinclair, Atari XL, Spectrum 48k Plus, the three MSX I had: a Talent MSX DPC-200, a TPC-310 and a Spectravideo 728 that I still have ...
Later I continued playing although much less because there were other things that interested me, obviously one grows and their tastes change, they start programming, chase girls, hang out with friends, etc., the normal thing, but I also hit hard and even with LucasFilm / Lucas Art, Sierra OnLine and a lot of other games.

I have no problem with the games themselves, they are another form of leisure and nowadays even of socializing thanks to platforms like Steam.

The problem is the assholes who call themselves "gamers" when the definition of gamer is: "big asshole with hairs on the balls that vegetates for life; parental parasite ».
Yeah, I know that there are a privileged few who live by playing and the truth is that I do not envy them at all: I am sure that not only do they not enjoy what they do but they cannot even be proud of what they do - and if they are proud of being gamers is because they are marmots.

It is not the fault of the companies in the industry that make them believe that they are cool to feed back the market, it is the brains of polenta that enjoy that onanistic and passive life.

          1.    helena_ryuu said

totally agree, also everyone there in my class called themselves "gamers" 😛 for that reason of shame, there was one who claims to know each and every one of the pokemon of each pokemon game that has come out, and with 20 years of age 😛 hahaha.

I'll tell you something that I just think is pathetic. A guy from my class carries a laptop and a netbook, and in the middle of the hall of the faculty (Sep, there is not much order here) he starts playing I don't know what I'm playing, with a controller and with the netbook watching, I don't know what ... ... do not tell me that this is not subnormal.

I have nothing against games, only that I am pessimistic, I have only played 3 games in my life and 2 are not finished yet xDDDD, my brother loves games, but he is not obsessed, he plays for leisure, he is 15 years old, nothing out of the ordinary, the problem is that there are people who are very obsessed with things.

It's like people who call themselves «otaku», in my mind I only have the negative connotations of the term: / I like manga and anime but not so much hahahaha

Steam may install it, there is a game that since I saw it I love it is so cute> w <It is called chantelise, and I played it sometime (without finishing it of course jjajajaja) I hope it appears in steam for linux.

I like games, I'm not a gamer, because I don't dedicate myself to that, nor do I know about XD pokemons, but I used the Linux distros with games for my nephews because they fill the house computer with viruses, hey! I like FPS, it's my way of using my free time, I'm already an adult, it makes me angry to be part of »Party», it doesn't leave anything good, I have a brother who is a developer, that's why I know Linux, I like Linux, but I I like my hardware to take advantage of it, when I bought the computer I started to overclock it and I wanted to check the performance between linux and windows, and guess what, I couldn't get mad, I only heard 5 speakers so linux almost no longer use it, An openofice is not the same as an excel with all its characteristics, linux closes the programs many times, without prior notice, so it does not work for me, and the games do not work yet. Linux is fine for basic use at home, but without games I don't have it, I think it lacks dedicated developers. stop mom **** s.
