Available for download Xfce 4.10

Greetings guys. After several days of absence, I am here with you again and this time, I bring you the news that many of us were waiting for: it is now available for download version 4.10 my Desktop Environment Favourite: Xfce. According to its own developers, this is the best version it has ever had Xfce, and at least I know.

For those who want to install it from the sources, for example users of Debian as I do not want to wait, I have already talked about how to do it in this post. On the website of Xfce (which has been slightly renovated) you can see the changes of this version and also, a lap with some of the new features that have been included. They can download the fonts independently from this link, although I recommend downloading them all at once.

I hope to install this new version today and if everything goes well, I plan to do a clean installation of Debian to generate the .deb with checkinstall. I'll tell you ... For the rest, I can only wish the users of the little mouse to enjoy it to the fullest.

In the chat they commented that it is already in the Arch testing repos.
Let's see when they move it to Extra to test the new Thunar ^^

I almost know the answer: will Ubuntu 12.04 arrive in the coming months ... or will we have to wait for 12.10?

It even seems that they did it on purpose ...

As they told me you have this ppa:

      sudo add-apt-repository ppa: mrpouit / ppa && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I don't use Ubuntu to test it, but I went in and the packages were there.

      1.    giskard said

I went to Launchpad and what it says about this PPA is:

        (Experimental) Xfce packages.
        Currently: Xfce 4.10pre2 packaged.
        Everything should work fine, hopefully.

That is, it is not the final 4.10. Be careful with that !!!

        Below it says:

Please note that when Xfce 4.10 is released, packages will be moved to a more “official” location, such as https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/xfce-4.10

And in that link there are no files yet. We will have to wait or download the sources and compile them with the elav script 🙂

There is little left to have xfce with gtk3, I think for 4.12 if I remember correctly 🙂

    1.    elav <° Linux said

I don't think they have started to develop yet Xfce about gtk3, but yes, without a doubt version 4.12 will give a lot to talk about.

    2.    topocrium said

The only thing ported to GTK 3 is gtk-xfce-engine (or whatever it is called since the name changes depending on the source), which is not essential either.

Also the port to GTK 3 is not very clear if it is for 4.12 or 4.14. One of the main reasons is to make sure libraries are "mature" enough to avoid inconsistencies that force code to be "hacked" that would only cause maintenance problems.

And on the other hand, for when they decide to carry it out, no one expects it to emerge from one version to another. I almost expect a transition version, with part of the migrated components but maintaining a certain compatibility with GTK2. Something similar to what happened with 4.8 but referring to the Xfce base libraries.

Coincidentally I just published an article where it is briefly explained what will happen to gtk3 y Xfce 😀

I was going to install Xubuntu Precise to remember my XFCEeros times but since Ubuntu Precise suits me so well I am lazy to replace it.

Good news for XFCE, I've always been drawn to this environment 😉

      1.    Yoyo Fernandez said

YES, I am ubuntero because I use Ubuntu, I have been testing / using it since the first version, 4.10 Berrugoso Wild Boar 😉

I am NOT ashamed to say that I use ubuntu, the same as not to say that I use Pardus Debian Mac and Windows 7, I use and install what I like regardless of what others say, it is the advantage of being free and having my own thought 😉

Although I have not had ubuntu as a fix because I have been testing other things, rest assured that I will continue testing / installing and talking about it, the same as other distros that I have.

Just comment that this anti-ubuntera current does not bother me, I pass olympically from that, or as it would be said in my land (I pass it through the lining) xDD

        Greetings, cumpa 😉

        1.    elav <° Linux said

Compa, don't listen to Courage, do not bother with that .. You are free to use whatever you want and Ubuntu as a layout it's not bad.

          1.    Yoyo Fernandez said

            Amm not calm, cumpa.

I am not bothered by Courage's comments, I have seen them much worse 😉

That doesn't bother me, we already know him and we have to raise him xDD

As the emsLinux company said in G +: One should use the shit that serves and likes, not the shit that serves and others like ...

          2.    commentator said

Not bad, sometimes it works better than Debian.

In the end they didn't let Thunar man the desk… it's still xfcedesktop…

I have opted for the Xubuntu, which also the LTS, so I will not have problems.
I was using stable from debian and seeing that the testing gave me problems to install xfce from the netinstall. I left debian for more serious things and have a little fun with xubuntu, which has newer packages, from ubuntu and brings a mature xfce. Crunchbang should think about giving it a version for the debian stable repos and going back to the ubuntu branch, where everything was more comfortable, although its creator already does a great job to leave it as it is.
But hey, in the end all this breakdown is given to me by the damn linux dependencies, sometimes I don't know if they are good or bad but they spoil a lot when it comes to having some comfort.

I hope this update reaches xubuntu 12.04 ... it would be a shame to have to wait until 12.10

    1.    topocrium said

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news:

“Xfce 4.10 packages for Xubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin).

Please note that only Xfce 4.8 is officially supported on Xubuntu 12.04. Therefore, any bug report filed with this PPA enabled is likely to get rejected, or you may be asked to reproduce the issue with Xfce 4.8. The first Xubuntu release to feature Xfce 4.10 will be Xubuntu 12.10 (codename unknown for now). »

Unless someone at Xubuntu creates a 4.10 PPA, it will take 6 months for Xfce 4.10 to be released on Xubntu.

elav, you already have the .Deb that you mentioned at the beginning of this post?

I need to know how I can install XFCE 4.10 on a clean install of debian!

Greetings and thank you very much!

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Actually, the packages are already created in several ways, but some give me an error. My main problem is that I don't know how to tell the .deb which dependencies it needs, according to those available in the system. I am going to install a virtual machine with Debian from scratch, and I'll see how to compile Xfce in clean.
