GNOME 3.8 available

It is now available to download the GNOME version 3.8, a release that comes loaded with news and improvements for users of this Desktop Environment.

What's new Old man?

A facelift has been carried out when searching for applications or files in the Activities Overview, with a cleaner and more organized design, at least from my point of view. Now all the attention falls on the search result:

search

Clocks, a new application that has been inserted into the GNOME Core since version 3.6 has matured a bit, and now allows us, among other things, to see the time of different countries:

clock

One of the features that I am sure users will greatly appreciate is the Classic mode en GNOME 3, where the Applications and Luagres menu is recovered, in addition to the panel at the bottom with the minimized windows, but I still have a doubt. Why leave the window open next to the menu bar?

classic-mode

Besides this we can find:

  • Corrections in the details of the theme and icon set.
  • Rendering and graphics improvements.
  • Improvements in accessibility and privacy options.

These and other news can be seen in the Release Notes.

The new Activities menu looks great. I think I will update when they do an extensive update to most of the Gnome-Shell extensions. 😀

Without a doubt the best news of the day :). Since version 3.6 Gnome has returned and I have also returned from Xfce or KDE to Gnome 😀

Although GNOME is not the DE I use, I would like to try it on my Arch Linux. Does anyone know when it will be in the repos?

  5.   Leo said

I don't know why but every time I try to install Gnome on my pc something ugly happens.
In openSuse it does not start being totally black.
In Arch the same but a little different.
    ¬¬

    I keep my LXDE + Compiz + Tint2
    😀

When v. 3.6 was in the Arch repos, I reinstalled it, but upon logging in (GDM and KDM alike) the screen would go dark and I came out the window with the sad monitor. I removed all extensions manually and deleted all hidden configuration directories in my personal folder. The GNOME ones, of course.
      Regards!

What Linux distribution do you use?

It looks pretty good, but I still won't install it hahaha… I'll stick with Xfce. I hope the Gnome team continues to improve, especially the classic mode and so many of the users who lost (including me), could return!

  7.   risketo said

The new classic mode catches my attention, it will have to be tried.

  8.   guaripolo said

Always a Gnome user and for my gnome 3 it is the best ... I have seen many comments that Gnome does not work well and blah blah blah ... What it is to me runs like a charm in a very simple notebook ... the bad if it is not even Gnome 3.6 is on ubuntu 12.04, hopefully it will come out soon in the repositories

Anyone know if it will be available for Fedora 18?

    1.    codelab said

According to the Fedora wiki they plan to incorporate Gnome 3.8 in Fedora 19, at the moment you can at most opt for Gnome 3.7.91 in rawhide.

      More info: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Gnome3.8

      A greeting.

Excellent news, I already felt that version 3.6 already had flavors of aging. The truth looks very good, both in classic and mobile mode. In Arch it will take a little longer since it has to exit testing (same step with 3.6).

For those who like the classic mode, I recommend you dive into CSS programming and you can leave it fancy and that's what I love about this DE. In addition, FILES (understand nautilus) can be configured the same and everything that "lost" can be added again with a few scripts.

Anyway, to wait (the truth I'm impatient) to be available in the arch repos to enjoy it 100.

    Greetings all.

    1.    kennatj said

The problem is for those of us who do not know CSS programming.

A few days ago I installed 3.6 in Manjaro and I did not like it at all, I think the shell only ate 200 mb by itself, now I did not test the classic mode ,,,

  11.   TUDz said

The information is appreciated, a few weeks ago I tried to give Arch + Gnome 3.6 (With gnome shell) a try but without a doubt, it is not my thing. I hope this new installment solves several problems that were presented in the version that I mentioned. Currently (and I don't know how) I ended up in Kubuntu 12.10 and so far everything is pearl. By the way, introducing a bit of off-topic, does anyone know how to modify the User Agent in Rekonq to indicate Kubuntu as OS here on the blog? The KDE environment detects me as well as the browser (Rekonq), but the Kubuntu icon does not show or its lights 🙁 Attention is appreciated.

The application name remains there just because it is a crucial issue in GNOME's redesign of interfaces. It is there because many of the desktop applications would not work without the menu and integrating the traditional menus again does not seem to be an option.

  13.   Garbage_Killer said

I already want to test it in fedora 19 * ¬ * and in what gnome 3.8 comes out it would already be 3.8.2

  14.   Rolo said

I see that it has already reached the debian repos but unfortunately they have not yet uploaded it for 64bit, ¬¬
    http://packages.debian.org/experimental/gnome-shell

    1.    artbgz said

Haha, they passed version 3.6 through the Arc de Triomphe, but okay, that means that when it unfreezes it won't take long to get to "testing".

      1.    Rolo said

gnome version 3.6 was in the experimental repos, it is more if you want to install the experimental version of gnome3 for 64bits, at this moment it is still 3.6.

gnome version 3.6 will surely not pass to the sid repos and they will surely jump to 3.8 in sid when wheezy is stable

      2.    Rolo said

Well gnome-shell 3.8 is already for 64 in the experimental debian repos !!!!
Now to try it in the note to see what wave 😀

    I DO NOT LIKE ….

there would be what ever how the classic return mode looks like ...

because I don't like the new shell like this

  19.   eco-slacker said

Uhm, I haven't tried gnome much and it doesn't appeal to me ...

    I'm Pro KDE

  20.   omarxz7 said

The "new classic mode" looks better than the shell .. it was strange to me that they said they were going to eliminate it in this version .. they saw that they would make a big shit if they had done it = P

  21.   burjans said

As the classic mode slightly resembles Cinnamon hmm… it looks good.

    hello2 😉

    1.    Rolo said

It looks like gnome 2, isn't it that Cinnamon imitates the gnome2 desktop lol?

  22.   pandev92 said

I don't like gnome shell at all and the truth is, I see unity much more productive and compiz in this case, it gives me much better performance with intel graphics than mutter, which tears at the top of the desktop, when I watch a movie.

    1.    Rolo said

@ pandev92 don't be a lie, unity is much slower than gnome3 (there are tests to support it), and mutter is a window manager that comes to replace metacity (for the purposes gnome-shell uses Clutter). The issue is that gnome shell does not support any other window manager than mutter

      1.    pandev92 said

Everything you want, but on my pc with intel drivers, gnome shell with mutter goes like ass. Besides, the tearing does not take it away or GOD. (which in the XXI century sends the balls) By the way, I use an intel i3570k, so I do not see speed difference between unity, gnome shell, kde or windows7 ..., if I notice the difference in graphics performance, where I see that compiz fits better with intel drivers.

        1.    Rolo said

@ pandev92 the problem is not the intel drives or gnome shell but you use ubuntu and some old kernel.
You mention you have an i3570k will it be an i5-3570k ?? if so, it comes with Intel® HD Graphics 4000 graphics. which surely do not have good support in versions 12.04 12.10 unless you put a 3.8 kernel

          1.    pandev92 said

I already tried updating with xorg edgers, the kernel and the drivers! but the same problem, it's mutter's fault !! with compiz no problem.

          2.    frame said

With an i5 you would not have to feel any kind of difference because if you put a stone as a desk it would fly. so clearly the problem is not gnome or compiz or anything, just ubuntu. you could try installing debian wheezy with the experimental kernels, or arch-linux, or fedora, among many.
Now if the issue is that you like unity and being spied on by amazon, as the saying goes "... who likes peaches to hold their fluff ..."

        2.    spacejock said

          Unity is slow, slow.
Look, Fedora 18 with Gnome on an intel, it doesn't run, it flies.
And above without installing proprietary drivers I see HD without installing anything.

        3.    pandev92 said

          @Branch

Being spied on by amazon? I already spy on google chrome ,, google, microsoft with outlook and skype etc, so it's a pretty stupid excuse. And if it's mutter's fault, I haven't been using linux for two days, I've even been through gentoo .., I've been an archlinux user and until recently I was a chakra user, and 3 days ago, I had the opportunity to try gnome shell too in fedora 18 with everything updated, and do you know what the result has been? TEARING! Well, there you, it is even in the mailing list of the intel devs, that the problem of kwin and mutter is that they implement a table patch that causes tearing in certain situations ..., but no, as you are a hater ubuntu fanboy, well What are you going to do.

          1.    Rolo said

@ pandev92 out of curiosity what is the kernel version you use? is it 32bits or 64bits ??? ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 ??? do you have an i5 with Intel® HD Graphics 4000 ???

The espionage issue is not a joke http://pillku.org/article/ubuntu-es-spyware/

          2.    pandev92 said

Try Fedora or openSUSE and you will see performance .. Go from Ubuntu and many of the problems will be solved

Unfortunately, the same errors, I usually have them in all distros, are generally compositing bugs (mutter and kwin, they are the ones that screw me the most, but kwin will fix it in kde 4.11). Use ubuntu 12.10
            Linux frank-System-Product-Name 3.7.0-7-generic # 15-Ubuntu SMP Sat Dec 15 16:34:21 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i686 GNU / Linux

I can only use up to kernel 3.7, because with 3.8, the system does not start with the intel, it remains black screen, I already opened a bug report in kernel.org.

        4.    peterczech said

Try Fedora or openSUSE and you will see performance .. Skip Ubuntu and many of the problems will be solved 🙂

        5.    rhinopope said

I have a sandybridge i5 and I solved the problem of tearing by adding
          Option "TearFree" "true" to xorg.conf

  23.   truko22 said

It looks very good, there are options for all tastes that is the good thing 😀

  24.   ldd said

I stay with mate until gnome goes back to what it was in series 2

  25.   Gabriel said

Too bad it doesn't have a global menu, they'd have to do it more os x and less i os.

I have never liked Gnome 3 but now it looks better
    An off topic question
I have Xubuntu and the desktop I use is XFCE, however I also have the Unity desktop once I accessed this (Unity) and the Xfce indicator plugin now shows me the icons of the unity
In other words I would like to know how to eliminate these icons since they do not serve me since even though they display menus they do not work when clicking on their options and they only take up space
I know it's not very important but on a netbook the screen space is very important
I attach a screenshot, the icons that I want to remove are the ones in red

    http://s2.subirimagenes.com/imagen/previo/thump_8382541panel.png

  27.   elendilnarsil said

When will the icons be resized ??? I find them exaggeratedly large.

    1.    kennatj said

And since we are changing the theme and icons because they are horrible.

  28.   Abraham said

how beautiful and functional it looks, hopefully I will recover the lightness of gnome two, the nautilus scripts are very important for me and my work.

  29.   Algave said

I'm not convinced yet ... maybe when Gnome 4 comes out 😀

  30.   gabriel said

Honestly every day Gnome convinces me more, when I'm away from home I use it on a NETBOOK .. yes gentlemen, netbook with 1gb of ram and an atom n455, obviously I give it a quiet use, but it is at most between 300 and 400 RAM. Nothing for such a friendly interface.

  31.   Matthews said

    And when will Cinnamon 1.8?

  32.   Federico said

    I don't quite like it

  33.   Josh said

I have been a KDE user for a couple of years (precisely when Gnome changed the interface from 2 to 3) it looks very interesting but at least I find it confusing to handle it, it is difficult for me to adapt, later we will see how it evolves.

  34.   Eighty-VI said

    Already on the Debian repo?

I'm more lost than a monkey with a razor. 😀

It takes me like Chrome, when I'm using a Chromium Dev. -.-
