Available Kubuntu 12.10 with KDE 4.9

As is logical together with the launch of Ubuntu 12.10, the outputs of the rest of the variants that exist for this distribution are also added.

In the case of Kubuntu 12.10, this release comes with KDE 4.9 offering all the advantages, improvements and power that this Desktop Environment contains. As in the parent distribution, Kubuntu eliminates Alternative CDs, offering a DVD with around 1GB of packages.

New applications by default.

Calligra becomes the Office Suite by default:

KDE Telepathy 0.5 the Messaging Client that replaces Kopete, providing easy access to Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and many other instant messaging protocols.

LightDM now uses QML-based themes and replaces KDM.

In addition, applications such as Skanlite to manage scanners and Kamoso to manage the webcam. Added a tool to configure the tablets Wacom, which still needs proof so any feedback will be well received.

Another new tool is responsible for managing printers in an easier way, which we can access from an applet in the panel:

In this version you can find other improvements in Owncloud, the Appearance Configuration Manager for Gtk applications, and in Contact which now has integration with Facebook and Google. But not everything is rosy, and as is typical in Ubuntu and its derivatives, in order to meet the release deadline, they deliver this version with some problems:

  • The partition manager hangs when many partitions are made manually.
  • KIMPanel is not configured.
  • Krita has problems when we open "Settings" Configure Krita ".
  • Plasma-netbook freezes after clicking 'Page one' in the pane.
  • There are no Translations included in kubuntu-docs.
  • Desktop Effects are slow and corrupt using Table 9.

I thought that since they no longer had anything to do with Canonical they were going to change their name.

I don't like kde, I don't like kubuntu but you have to admit they have done an enormous job.

    My sincerest congratulations!!!

I do love KDE and in fact on my desktop I use Kubuntu 12.04 and on my laptop where I am on my desktop I use the endurance of pardus 2011.2. It is really good KDE seems to me to be the most complete desktop there is.
Moving on to another topic, it seems that the kubuntu people had read my mind by replacing calligra with libreoffice. I had already tried it on some occasions and it seemed like a very good office suite.
let's see what improvements these changes bring. kudos to the guys at Kubuntu for such a great distro with KDE one of the best along with OpenSUSE and Chakra.

Completely agree. Kde is one of the most complete, elegant and customizable desktops out there.
      Greetings.

hello fercho !! I'm testing kubuntu 12.10 and the default office suite is libreoffice and not calligra.

      1.    ferchmetal said

oh look, how strange that, on the kubuntu page it said that they were going to put calligra by default instead of libreoffice, and from what I see you also get the ubuntu icon instead of kubuntu like me, at this time I am on my kubuntu 12.04.

Well then, the Kubuntu 12.10 developers themselves fooled me, or maybe I got it wrong ... Thanks for warning.

For me it is the best desktop of all the OS and I did not like Calligra, I still use LibreOffice which is the best choice for now because it supports all formats while with Calligra there is only one option.

  4.   federico said

Hello elav !! I had also read about calligra in official kubuntu forums, it is seen that at the last moment they changed their mind or something will have happened. but until recently they were going to use calligra by default.

So they switched to LightDM, can someone explain the difference to KDM for me? I just updated and for now what I see is that the login themes "killed" me.
If you give me a hint before I re-install KDM and shit, I'd appreciate it :)

I guess they did it to stay in line with Ubuntu - LDM has a lot of hype these days ...

Downloading to test Kubuntu 12.10, while still using the Ubuntu LTS. but it would not be strange to be changing, let's hope the distro surprises us.

Do not install ubuntu 12.10, do it through a virtual machine because honestly it is super slow, but since it is a version that is not LTS it was coming but in truth I think it is the slowest in the history of ubuntu. I am still with my beloved kubuntu 12.04

    1.    ferchmetal said

Do you really think it is slower? I recently updated from version 12.04 to 12.10 I am on Kubuntu 12.10 and the truth seems to me that it is faster sincerely. It must be because of the improvements that have been made to KDE in version 4.9

      1.    neomyth said

I mean ubuntu with unity my dear friend, on the other hand, kubuntu works like the gods but I am still in treatment of my acute versionitis so I did not install or update my kubuntu 12.04

        regards

  8.   aldo said

I'm going to download it because kubuntu is the one that can save Ubuntu because unity gives ascooo it is slower in 12.10

  9.   jorgemanjarrezlerma said

    That such.

The truth is I am not a KDE user, but I have it installed along with other environments on the desktop PC that I have at home and the truth is generally fine in this version. I thought that having another sponsor and more attachment to the community, in addition to following the KDE quality philosophy, would be a little more worked. Although being frank if we compare it with Chakra or openSUSE if I consider it stops meeting the expectations that were had (at least mine). The guys from Kubuntu in the next release will have to make more of it since the community they have is great and very good, so I think they deserve a much more polished product, of course this in order to exploit the benefits of KDE.

It is the history of the whole life of Kubuntu, it always lacks 10ctvs for the weight, unfailingly each new version of Kubuntu has that half-cooked air, like it lacked something to be round.
Your same impression was the one I had with version 9.04 (when I switched to Kubuntu from Ubuntu and Debian before) and that I endured until 9.10 where I made the decision to check if KDE was really bad or was Kubuntu the one that made it look mediocre.
Since I was changing in addition to the distro I wanted something interesting, to learn and be able to get my hands on it without breaking everything with an apt-get so I had two options: Gentoo or Arch.
The two distros were interesting but since the Arch ISO was the first to download I tried that first ... and there was no going back - although there were several flirtations with Gentoo 🙂
After using KDE SC in Arch it is almost impossible to use KDE in any other distro, maybe except for Sabayon, in Arch KDE feels light like LXDE, it flies, while in others like openSUSE, Chakra (which is not Arch) or Kubuntu he drags himself; On the other hand, in Fedora it was fine although it was always to use an older KDE (and there was also the claustrophobic issue of the canned distro) when in Arch you usually have the new version of KDE within a few days of being released.

The truth is that the work that the developers did in this version of kubuntu is very good, this is tremendous, the kde 4.9 works very well, the distro lacks polishing some minimal details, but the general lines works very well and is highly recommended.

Kubuntu works wonderfully, yes, optimizing it, removing effects and such works very very well.

      Hi @xxmlud,
What optimizations are you talking about, could you share them?
(Turning off and off the visual effects doesn't count!) 😉

I'll tell you what happened to me, I'm a 70-year-old veteran who likes to learn even at this age and I do it very well. Some time ago when I retired I thought about buying a pc, this as usual came with Windows, it was a continuous problem, the issue of viruses and downloading programs that more than once left my pc in misery a while ago my son told me why Not using Ubuntu was the great moment, but then I decided to download kubuntu and install it A WONDERFUL like a short of my times »everything is well placed in a small space»

Thank you for sharing your experience with us 😀
Although Ubuntu is not exactly the most recommended distro for novice users or newcomers to Windows (especially for Unity which is not very intuitive in my opinion), Kubuntu would recommend it, the KDE environment is undoubtedly excellent and Kubuntu has very good applications 😀

One question, on the non-kubuntu official page I have not found the 12.04 LTS version, will you not have a link to download it?
