Linux 3.16 kernel available… what's new?

A new version of the most popular kernel (by far) for Linux distros. Linus Torvalds was working all last weekend on the new version, advertising a few days ago his release and stable state.

Linux 3.16, codenamed "Shuffling Zombie Juror" (something like: «Dragging the Zombie Jury»… OMFG !!), brings us a group of important improvements, and here are some of them:

  • Cross-platform ARM kernel image for multiple ARM SoCs (including Exynos)
  • Support for the Nvidia Tegra K1 and Kepler GPU
  • Driver for Nokia N900 modem included in the mainline (btw, this Nokia is from 2009, incredible that it did not have support yet ... when there is already support for the most modern ones, even when the Nexus 6 or there are people who go to buy iPhone 6, the most modern will be supported shortly)
  • Initial support for the Intel Cherryview
  • Better driver support for the Sixaxis and DualShock 4
  • Sony-HID driver improvements
  • RMI driver for Synaptics touchpad
  • Driver for Dell FreeFall
  • 80 changes and fixes to the Btrfs file system
  • New audio drivers for Cirrus, Realtek and Analog devices
  • Support for Tegra HD-audio HDMI.

The next Ubuntu 14.10 Linux kernel is planned to be Linux 3.16, as well as others that we use distros like Arch or similar (rolling release) we will have it available in not long.

Those who are impatient, and who especially think they know what they do, can download Linux 3.16 from here.

Thank linuXgirl for her post on GUTL, from which most of what is exposed here was taken.

PD: They can read in Phoronix more information, much more detailed and technical.

Well if you dare to compile this Linux Kernel you can use it here: http://oleksisfraga-udic.blogspot.com/2010/12/configurar-compilar-e-instalar-kernel.html?m=1

    regards

Hooola, Oleksis… Don't you remember me? !!! Well, no, what are you going to remember if you never met me with this nickname ... I'm "Karell", Cary Karell. I see you're still stuck with TPLink (and its bloody SmartLink chipset) ... or is that link old? I now have a Smart56k USB that brings me to my head, but I already gave up and I have a MultiTech, the kind of hardware boot, which has made my life easier. I was very happy to see you here.

You forgot something: Debian Jessie will include that same kernel as soon as it freezes (3.14 has been insufferable for me).

I installed it on Monday in Kubuntu 14.04 (64) and in Netrunner (64) and in both I did not see major changes, on the contrary some programs stopped working correctly and others that I had at startup did not start. I went back to kernel 3.14 which is LTS

Something tells me that nouveau despite the improvements, still continues with the annoying bug that affects several of the NV40 chips, where the whole damn system freezes as soon as I open a window, I don't know but with my old card I feel like a orphan thanks to nouveau (T_T).

However, there are good things in kernel 3.16, I'll start to compile to see how it goes 🙂

I tried to compile it in Xubuntu LTS 14.04, and it almost gave me a heart attack when I saw that something strange was coming out in Grub (unfortunately, right now I am suffering a dual boot for work reasons). I decided to remove it and go back faster than running to 3.14. Maybe I'll try Jessie / Sid later.

KZKG ^ Gaara, my boy, thanks for the referrals.

"Shuffling" is a procedure used to randomize a deck of playing cards to provide an element of chance in card games. Shuffling is often followed by a cut,…

    "Dragging ..." Oh .. My F * ckling G * d… HOW?

ha! I like this interpretation better:
«Zombie judge who avoids his obligation / duty»
      "Evasive zombie judge"

-1 point for me .. (where did I get the word "Judge"? Aargh)
        "Zombie Jury Unbound"

Hopefully with this 3.16 kernel release, I hope they will remove Wednesday's Intel MEI bug (if not for @Yukiteru_Amano, I would have been suffering).

They eliminate certain bugs and leave others, I still continue to implore them to delete the bug from the Nvidia NV40 from kernel 3.8 and nothing at all: /

I suffered a similar bug, but with the intel. The desk was rubbing, but the audio still sounded, it did not respond or giving the combination of keys to enter the TTy #. I did some tweaks, but at the same time they would go back and forth again.

I got tired of this, and I started looking for an nVidia card that was the cheapest and that was compatible with my board and the one I found with those characteristics was a GT 630 and goodbye to the problem.
