Available SliTaz 4.0: A distro for PCs with 128Mb of RAM: D

Today the SliTaz version 4.0 (a distribution weighing less than 40mb) after 2 intense years of development, fixes and improvements.

SliTaz GNU / Linux is a free operating system that works directly on the computer memory, from removable devices such as a CD-ROM or memory USB. It is light, fast and fully installable on the hard disk. SliTaz It is distributed in image format of LiveCD, which you can easily burn to a cdrom from which to boot the system later. With the system working, you can now remove the LiveCD and use the reading unit for other things. He LiveCD provides a fully equipped distribution, working in a graphical environment and allowing you to save your data in a memory USB. The system can be extended with the package manager tazpkg, and security updates are also provided for versions cooking y stable.

The project SliTaz also provides free technical support for users through the Mailing list (list i18n) and the Forum in English. You can also contact us for more information, suggestions or comments, through the mailing list or directly by mail to .

Tested on two laptops and did not load on either

    Laptop1: Core i5 4RAM
    Laptop2: Dual Core 3RAM

What other lightweight distribution do you recommend?

with those laptops so you want light distros? you can put whatever you want

      1.    Juan Pablo said

Because I want and I can partner 😀 and the curiosity to try

and why didn't he carry you?

      1.    Juan Pablo said

Well, while the kernel is loading, it remains "stuck" and does not continue to load, I tried both versions, I am going to try the other lightweight distributions that you recommend.

        regards

Puppy Linux, Slitaz, Dawn Small Linux 🙂

I'm already downloading it! Slitaz is one of my favorite distros =)

    Regards!

I already tried it in version 3.0 and it seems like a great distro, especially to rescue old PCs ^^

  4.   assuarto said

After so much waiting for it, it hurts that they removed the xvesa version

A great and very light distro. Highly recommended for machines with little memory. When I provided it in virtualbox it indicated that it consumed 30mb of ram at startup, incredible!

And it loads everything directly into RAM ... so amazingly faster than another distro on a Corei7 HAHA.

I have to try it, I just don't think so. :OR

I have an archlinux + openbox on a pentium III that starts me at 40 mb. And debian with lxde started at 70mb. No need to search for rare distros that consume little.

    1.    e2391 said

There is a difference, and that is that in these "rare distros" both the kernel and the binaries are optimized to run on older hardware. For example, Slitaz is compiled for i486 while Arch is compiled for i686.

Some time ago I do not remember where I read about a guy who wanted to put Arch in a Pentium I 133mhz and could not because the architecture of that processor is i586.

ConnochaetOS is a distro that could have worked since it is compiled for that architecture.

I386 binaries may work well on architectures like i586 or i686 but not the other way around, and if they do, they may not do quite well.

At least this is what I understand = P

      Regards!

But debian is coming for i386. Arch is not valid for very old machines.

    2.    assuarto said

      and who said yes?

With my Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140 and 1GB of Ram, TT does not start and I wanted so much to try it ...

  9.   Merlin The Debianite said

It seems like a good distro but, it's true, Ridri is right with Debian and if you have a very light system, the problem is when you put heavier programs on it and that lightness is no longer so light, that's why you always need rare distros as you say.

    1.    ridri said

In the debian and arch repositories there are all kinds of lightweight applications: midori, abiword, qmmp, pcmanfm, xfburn ... as well as lightweight kernels like Con Kolivas.
Lightweight distros make it easy for you not to have to search. But if you are a lover of debian or arch you always have the option to lighten them to the maximum. The great advantage of debian is that we have all the linux world packages at our disposal, even if it is not the most recent version.

I had to use this system on one occasion because the new m board burned and I only had to rescue the "old one" from where it was stored, it only had 222MB (visible) of RAM and an AMD Semprom. I was able to configure the conky and also install emesene, it came with midori by default and that was enough for me, it is true that I stayed as a user of this distro for at least 1 month and I learned about its installer tazpkg which is very fast as it compresses its packets in the algorithm lzma so that at the time of download / installation is the fastest 😉

This if I test it fixed, what performance it promises; has to fly. Almost like Tiny Core.

This distro is great, I've used it more than once to retrieve information from a machine that didn't start, it's good to have it handy just in case. Today I was testing it in Virtualbox and it works very well.
