Available Wine 2.0

Just three months ago we told you about Release of Wine version 1.9.23, with support for Myst V: End of Ages; as well, a few days ago the Wine 2.0 version was released, bringing with it considerable improvements in the face of, precisely, the support of video games and other applications such as Photoshop or Microsoft Office 2013.

Wine is a program created for install in our Linux distributions those applications that we only find in Windows. Broadly speaking, what Wine does is allow the execution of programs designed for MS-DOS and for the different versions of the hegemonic window system. In fact, paradoxically, Wine was born WINdows Emulator, to later become the recurring acronym for Wine Is Not an Emulator, but a "executor".

It has been a year since its last big launch and, precisely for that reason, Wine arrives with a good handful of novelties. In its official announcement state that they have exceeded 6.600 improvements, but what strikes us at first glance is the 64-bit support for macOS and for the Mono engine, the support for GStreamer 1.0 and Direct3D, the new user interface or optimizing scaling on HiDPI displays.

One of the media triumphs of this new version of Wine is definitely introduce Microsoft Office 2013 on Linux. But, although this is one of the great novelties due to the size of the Office package, at present, users do not usually resort to Wine for these purposes. Those who use Ubuntu, Mint or any other Linux distribution usually install Wine to be able to play games or applications that do not run on their operating system. According to the statement from its creators, special work has been done on "support for many applications and games".

Wine version 2.0 also includes DirectX features we hadn't seen on Linux till the date. This means that heMultimedia programs and games will finally work better even if they don't have a native version for Linux. This is the case of editing programs like Photoshop, which will now run much faster; or games like Doom 2016, which has shown surprising performance in Wine 2.0.

To be able to enjoy this new update from your Favorite Linux distribution, just download the appropriate binaries here. and follow the corresponding instructions.

This new version of Wine 2.0, helps us continue to strengthen the reasons for more users to finish migrating to Linux. For years, our beloved operating system has proven to be more efficient, we have forgotten about viruses, we already enjoy a good range of totally free distributions for all tastes and requirements and we have practically all the basic use programs ... also with applications such as Wine 2.0, the range of applications that we can enjoy grows considerably. What more could you ask for from the free operating system par excellence?

The only thing that requires me to start Windows is having to use MS Office for work, in fact I am working on this right now. I have installed Wine 2.0 and the MS Office 2013 PLUS installer does not work, it hangs saying: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 has encountered an error during installation.

In this case, the best thing would be to install Office through Play on Linux, it uses the Wine engine and is a little more customizable than Wine in raw form.

In my case I have Office 2010 on Ubuntu 16.04 running perfect.

Microsoft Access is a tool widely used in the business world, and neither Kexi nor Base come close to its potential. There is no choice but to install Microsoft Office on another partition, since all versions of Microsoft Office that can be installed with Wine through PlayOnLinux have the downside of not having Access. Cachis.

Many databases are made in Base or MySQL, but there are times when I have to make databases for companies that ask me, and I cannot ask them to install LibreOffice when they have already paid for a better one (the Office 2007, for example, has tools that greatly speed up the creation of forms). What is good about LibreOffice is that it uses BASIC instead of the nefarious Visual Basic ...

Hopefully I can install Office 2007 with Access for these kinds of jobs. (Although a virtual machine with WinXP and Office 2007 does not take up as much RAM, with 512 MB there is plenty). Cheers!

PS: What would be useful for me is to find a good advanced manual for LibreOffice Base (advanced: that teaches how to make complex queries, forms with filters, creation of buttons with more functionalities and everything seasoned with BASIC).
