Mind-blowing Compiz keybindings

The waste of resources that we do every day is incredible. Sometimes, we have a wonderful program like Compiz installed and, just out of ignorance, we use 10% of the functions and features that they have. In the case of Compiz, few are aware of its most important key combinations and that not only trigger effects of spectacular visual appeal but also make our work easier.

The list that appears below is not complete, it is simply a selection of the key combinations that in my view can be most useful and / or that can "blow your mind". 🙂

Let's start with those with some visual appeal:

Super+W: allows you to select the active window. You should have several windows open to appreciate the "effect."

Super+E: allows you to select the active desktop.

Wow! You just have to double click on the desktop you want to activate.

Note: the Super key is the most commonly called "Windows key" (it has the Win logo). In case your keyboard has this key, it is to the left of the left Alt.

Ctrl + Alt + Side Arrows: switch desktop.

Super + Mouse wheel: zooms in on the point on the screen where the mouse cursor is.

Alt + Tab: this combination of keys may be one of the best known, for being the same as Windows. Through it, you can easily change windows.

Shift + Super + S: it changes the active window (same as Alt + Tab) but with the Flow Motion effect with which one passes the album covers on the iPhone.

Mouse wheel on the desk: In case you have the Cube effect enabled, this will move the Cube, allowing you to access the rest of your desktops.

Let's look at other combinations that, although they do not have much visual appeal, can be very useful in some cases:

Print Screen- Take a screenshot of the entire screen

Alt + PrintScreen- Capture the active window.

Alt + F1- Opens the main menu (where programs are listed, etc.) where the mouse cursor is. The person who thought this is truly a genius! I just found the death certificate from the main menu on my top panel. From now on, it will only appear when you need it. Coarse!

Alt + F2: a window appears that allows us to easily run applications. We just have to enter the correct command and voila!

Alt + F7: allows you to move the active window. This, although it may seem silly, can be very useful when, for some reason, it is not possible to move the window in another way. I am thinking, for example, of those cases where the top bar of the upper window of the window "disappears" or is "hidden" under the top panel of Gnome. Yes, "bugs" that can ever touch you.

Ctrl + Alt + D- Minimizes all windows and shows you the desktop.

I suggest you see the Compiz Wiki to see the full list of hotkeys. You can also go to System> Preferences> CompizConfig Options Manager (in case you don't have it, install the package compizconfig-settings-manager). Once there, click on the effect you want and see what key combinations it has. You can also change them for those that are more comfortable and practical. 🙂

Hello, what a pity I am so silly, but I installed compiz in Ubuntu 11.10 and my application icons, software center, internet, etc., disappeared, what can I do, thanks in advance.

The same happened to me. By installing Compiz and trying to configure it, I was left with only the wallpaper without icons or bars ... nothing, and I wanted the effects. I got tired of looking for some keyboard shortcut and nothing, you can just right click and change the wallpaper.
Can anything be done to get back the old settings or do I reinstall the ubuntu 12.04 unity?

This was for an older version of Ubuntu. It may be different now.

Alt + F1 opens a Terminal window for me. In fact I always used that combination for that, I didn't know Compiz was supposed to do something else with it.

I like your blog, but I want to ask you if you know the reason why my graphics card is not activated. I did this very easily with Ubuntu 9.10, but with 10.04 it started to crash and with 10.10 compiz definitely doesn't work. I'm so disappointed I want to go back to 9.10

Look, in general I try to help all those who have problems with Linux, but with such a vague description of the problem it is very difficult to help you. First, find out what the problem is, then google it and if you can't find anything, try it on forums or blogs (like this one).
    Cheers! Paul.

Hi, Pablo! As far as I understand, that is how the Alt + F1 combination works by default. Surely, a long time ago you told him that pressing Alt + F1 would open the terminal and you no longer remember. : S I don't know ... Anyway, I guess if you go to System> Preferences> Keybindings. There you will be able to remove / change (if you want) the combination to open the terminal. 🙂
    Cheers! Paul.
