Back to linux ... with Funtoo!

cap4

A few things in life have caused me to sell my NVidia graphics, and reinstalling OS X gave me a lot of laziness and was not worth it. So on Thursday of last week I started testing distros.

I went through Ubuntu, which I liked but as I always had errors with Compiz and my Intel, for some reason at some points VSync stops working and then it works again, I think the problem may be the powersaving applied by the new kernels, but i couldn't fix it.

In the end I decided to try Unity in Archlinux, I installed from the stable repository but the Unity session did not start, the dash did not appear, so I opted to test the unstable repository and as its name suggests, it is well ... unstable ( : P).

So I decided to try Arch but with KDE, but in the middle of the installation I remembered the Gentoo installation of our colleague and editor Tete Plaza, so I looked for the Gentoo tutorial, I lost 2 days installing it and in the end I could not install KDE ( pure layer 8 XD), so already desperate, without an operating system on my pc, I remembered that our colleague tete had installed funtoo.

I went to take a look at the Funtoo web documentation, it caught me, it seemed easy to understand, and so from a Linux Mint live dvd, I started installing Funtoo. The installation that lasted more or less 6 hours, has been easy and fun for me, the configuration of the WiFi very user friendly, and the explanations of the user flags very easy to understand.

Finally here, I am, with my Funtoo KDE, with Kernel 3.2 (if I know, soon I will update it to a higher version .., although everything works… perfectly…), optimized for my Core i5, and I have finally found a home and I feel calm :), so to play a few games on steam and soon maybe I'll be encouraged to do a tutorial on how to make Funtoo fine :).

Therefore WELCOME LINUX!

PS: I will not do tutorials on installing Funtoo, because I think the documentation on the web is quite easy to understand and perhaps the most difficult step you have is learning how to use cfdisk.

Did he come back as Superman? I mean, old and bitter? (referring to the last, and incidentally, lousy movie)

      1.    cat said

Superman has never been an endearing superhero, he is only powerful because he is powerful and depending on the writer (s) it is if Lex Luthor stops him with kryptonite or if he destroys an entire planet.

          +1
I think the same. In addition, he is not a suitable hero for the new generations.

«The installation that lasted about 6 hours, has been easy and fun for me» without words ...

Once at the univ. I spent 3 days getting KDE on Gentoo (gentoo was required in that project), after that the compile-all-with-optimized-flags-and-extra-ketchup fury passed and I returned to Debian.

    1.    pandev92 said

man xdd .., a long time ago it had taken me a long time to configure osx, so those 6 hours in funtoo were nothing, also I do it while on the laptop I watch anime xd

    Very good funtoo 😀

I recommend eix for you to do searches it is much faster than emerge –search.

    Greetings.

    1.    kik1n said

Both emerge -s and eix are good,

@ pandev92 What version of funtoo did you install? Stable or current?
Yesterday I was about to install Funtoo, but…. I've been using gentoo and it was a bit annoying (Las USEs).

The tracks you listen to look good, spend a few animes, I don't know what to see anymore 😀

      1.    pandev92 said

I have installed the current ehehe, the issue of the use flags is quite easy in case you want to install kde, with first selecting the kde profile and then playing with these use flags:

        http://paste.kde.org/p43de9f3c/

About anime mhh xdd, give anime a chance, the twelve kingdoms, then jigoku shoujo (hell girl), some seasonal xd, the world only god knows, seitokai yakuindomo, gundam stargazer, etc xd

        1.    edo said

the one with the twelve kingdoms is very good, but they never finished it, which is a shame.

          1.    pandev92 said

See when I saw the last chapter I stayed…: / .., this is the end xD? in fact the next day I was hoping there would be another episode on TV, but nothing haha

        2.    kik1n said

So did you choose the kernel? or is it that which is by default.
Because in gentoo, you are always on the cutting edge with kernels.

Installing gentoo with kde, last time it gave me a lot of problems.

From what teteplaza tells me, that in funtoo current, it has fewer problems with flags.

Yeah, I already have a fondness for anime. The series that I liked the most was Sword Art Online, Soro no Otoshimono, Maria Holic, Lucky Star, Suzumiya. But I still have animes to see like Evangelion, Gundam, etc ...
But now I'm looking for Anime with comedy.

          1.    yukiteru said

Comedy, you could see you Great Teacher Onizuka. Gospel is very good (my favorite so far) another good series is Ghost in the Shell and Ergo Proxy.

          2.    pandev92 said

In the installation guide I recommend you install the debian sources kernel, then you can choose the one you want, like the git kernel. xD

        3.    yukiteru said

GUNDAM !! (* __ *) I want to see them all will be the next thing I get off 😀

        4.    kik1n said

I am installing funtoo, but I see that the emerge-webrsync option is no longer present. That or I need to install that.

In this case it is not installed, how can I update portage?

        5.    kik1n said

          Other doubts.
How do you have your make.conf

Example: in gentoo I had several SYNC, from several places, here in Funtoo, is it only one?
          SYNC = »https://github.com/funtoo/ports-2012.git»

It also doesn't let me select the kde profile.

look at the guide because they are not selected as you are doing xd

          Yes, I already saw sorry.
I'm also going for the Gentoo kernel.
I thought funtoo would have its own kernel.

And it also has its funtools like gentools.

          1.    pandev92 said

No, taking into account that funtoo is based on gentoo, in addition to the fact that the creator is the same, it could be said that funtoo is gentoo that a few things are automated and optimized xd

Yeah, the only thing I noticed, the emerge-webrsync.

I understood that you were one of those who hated ubuntu, I was surprised that you installed it.
Regarding installing unity in arch, I tried it in manjaro for all the tutorials and archwikis that I came across, and I never could, it just did not start when rebooting, this is because those repositories no one maintains them, we will have to see what happens, but if I hope I can do it soon.

    1.    pandev92 said

I tried to install ubuntu because it was the only iso I had on my mother's pc ..., and on my current pc I didn't have any operating system, so I went for the easy thing. Although I did not last 24 hours.

      1.    yukiteru said

You have lasted a long time, the last time I tried Ubuntu I did not pass the LiveCD 😀

        1.    eliotime3000 said

We are even with that. For that reason I stayed on Debian Stable.

  7.   giskard said

6 hours! Oh my God!!! How much free time some have. Luckily my installations do not last 2 hours (in the worst case) Well, I have to admit that I only install Xubuntu or Linux Mint XFCE. And once SolydX. It will be that I am lucky that everything always works for me the first time. Although the last time I installed Xubuntu (13.04) the network interfaces disappeared! I managed to connect with a USB WiFi dongle and a short Google search (5 minutes, no more, no less) came up with the solution. Installation time that time <1 hour.

    1.    pandev92 said

It is free time that I generally dedicate to watching anime on Saturdays, so I can watch anime and install on the desktop pc at the same time, and it is not wasted time, but taken advantage of xd

So what is the difference between Gentoo and Funtoo?

    1.    diazepam said

The difference is that Funtoo is like the testing branch of gentoo but more stable. It has a git-based portage and stages optimized for sub architectures.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh won't let me install funtoo
    Problems with gcc, kdemeta.

    1.    pandev92 said

You should not update gcc, if you update something, make sure to always do –exclude gcc

      1.    kik1n said

        It is an update.
But now also, it won't let me install other libnl packages.

      2.    kik1n said

Well I echo emerge -uDNav world –exclude gcc and libnl
It seems to be going well.

In fact, I'm already inside funtoo, but in tty, I need to fully install kde and the ati drivers.

Well, at least it's more current than gentoo.

      3.    kik1n said

How you can activate the USEs that are in blue and inside parentheses ().
        I tried in package.use and make.conf

        1.    pandev92 said

If not I'm wrong, if they are in blue, everything is ok .., to install kde, use my use flag, and then install kdebase meta 🙂

          1.    kik1n said

Noo, in blue is that they cannot be installed.

          2.    pandev92 said

Did you do the etc-update, by setting the use flags oO? in package.use?

      4.    kik1n said

        Already,
And I have the same error, kde cannot be installed, unless gcc is updated, because in its update fortran is added and it is what it asks for.

        1.    pandev92 said

I could without updating kde, yours is very strange, it is assumed that with the k that comes in stage 3 you can install kde quietly mhhh, I did it like this when I saw that the new gcc did not compile at all.

          1.    kik1n said

            Hmm, download funtoo current.
And I only added few things in package.use

mmm, I'm bored funtoo. I can not do anything.

          2.    pandev92 said

Did you follow the web guide to the letter oO?

I don't know, but if you can do it from a live cd of ubuntu or linux mint quietly, following the guide step by step:

      http://www.funtoo.org/Funtoo_Linux_Installation

Step by Step! xD and ask only after being sure that the step by step did not work for you xD

What happens is that I do not want to waste time, besides that I do not have internet in my house and I connect at my sister's house and I already downloaded the image from the page and I do not want to lose my ubuntu documents, I just want to change the OS.

Try with a virtual machine then, and install a lightweight wm like openbox, if it went well you can try to install it on your pc .., but come on, if you want to use funtoo, you will lose time :).

You have been able to install a firewall like apparmor or selinux, or you have it just like you installed it, if I follow the gentoo guide installed the hardened kernel gives me an error with the udev service I do not understand the error as you try to read something in / dev look for it but I can't find anything, now if I start again with the gentoo kernel, everything works fine, but I can't install the firewall, I thought to disable the service but if I disable it, everything stops working, that is, keyboard, mouse, etc.
