It's a logo of the current Debian Stable, that is, of debian-squeeze. And the author of this logo is mdh3ll

Each Debian version codename (Etch, Lenny, Squeeze, Wheezy) is the name of a Toy Story character 😀
Squeeze is the green doll that hehe, that's why it appears in the logo 😉

Non-commentator… This is great! These are the things that show you that they have no idea of advertising, visual or residual impact or anything that has to do with their image. They have not done any kind of market research which clearly shows that the end user is not their main target. That the decisions were made by anyone who has nothing to do with an image profession.
Debian surely has the best slogan for an OS and I think it is the only one but its transparent image gives it a very important solidity ... But these sub names that ALL distros baptize their systems with is (mediocre) discouraging.
For those who do not have knowledge of the image in advertising, I am going to tell you that there is a factor called «Chain of Thoughts» this is a sub-conscious phenomenon that makes you relate one thing to others, such as: -Orange: Fruit / acid / anxiety / despair / finish / fast and so on many orange fast food chains.
Fedora: Mystery / Curiosity / Hat / Elegant / Seductive.
Verne: Important / Intelligent / Example / Genius / Visionary.

Now a Debian Toy Story ... If it is said that Steven Jobs revolutionized (and did) the film industry, it was not precisely because of Final Cut.

Debian has a way of being, it is robust yes ... but it has many faces (stable, testing, sid, experimental, etc) ... so making an image that captures all this is almost impossible.

It's my mistake when referring to the concepts ... The logo seems fine to me and the relationship of the names sid with unstable is really very interesting, but I do not relate them to Debian.
The image or advertising image defines the product, is what gives it its identity and is what offers it to the user. The logo is part of the advertising image and would be the facade or the cover letter because it is the first thing you see.
Debian has its own identity as slackware or RetHat. Debian is "The Universal Operating System", it is a fast, stable system and it is the best GNU / Linux that exists and nobody doubts that precisely because it has been earned, that is how it is known and is part of its identity.
An ordinary Debian user will not pay much attention to it and may be amused, it is not the same for a new user… When they present a serious and important product with an advertising image according to its characteristics, the product achieves a positive impact. But when a serious and important product is presented but with a comic book name, it loses credibility.
But, serious failure is that they make indirect reference to one of the main opponents of free software, that most people do not know that Jobs owned Pixar and thanks to him they created Toy Story? it's true, but sooner or later they find out and the relationship is imminent.
I guess Ian liked ToyStory so much, how it revolutionized the industry ... that he thought it convenient to name the releases of his new distro (Debian), hoping that like ToyStory, it would revolutionize the industry / market.

The first thing I think of in Debian is stability, but the truth is that I don't like that they use names from a cartoon and improve the artwork, but as something totally secondary. I prefer that it is called BARBIE and that they continue working on this excellent OS.

croto I tell you in all honesty, if the next version of Debian is called Barbie, I get to work at Microsoft ... And I really don't think that Fedora users don't care about the name, even less when most users are designers.
The presentation is very influential at reception, you will see that over time that decision will be reflected in its total number of users.

Debian has been putting these ToyStory names for a long time, it has nothing to do with the death of Jobs hehe
For what remains from stable to squeeze, and being in the process of freezing wheezy, I think we would rather use a logo for wheezy, to warm up and do a bit of publicity 😛
