Deepin Linux could leave the Debian base and become an independent distribution

Deepin 23 Preview

Deepin 23 Preview introduces several new features and possibly changes its base

In an effort to have a national operating system, academics from the National University of Defense Technology in the People's Republic of China established "Kylin, an Ubuntu release that enables the Chinese open source community to join the global Ubuntu community." and whose CEO sees a new opportunity for the ecosystem.

Another Chinese Linux distributions that have gained greater visibility international, is Deepin which recently released a preview of what is expected to be its next stable version and that it also has an existing stable version that is "Deepin 20.6".

On the preview that was released from Deepin 23, there are several changes that are in mind and that have not yet been implemented for various reasons, but what is interesting about this preview are the new features that have been released and, above all, the plans for distribution.

And is that since the trade war between the United States and China remains tense, Beijing is reportedly considering a complete ban on Microsoft Windows and related products. In fact, everyone knows that the Chinese government dreams of a day when its citizens only use local technologies.

To achieve this, China is deploying large financial resources to support initiatives innovative in the field of technology. Microsoft has had a presence in China for more than 20 years, having entered the market in 1992, Microsoft has expanded its business throughout the country as part of its long-term investment and development strategy.

Like the rest of the world, China relies heavily on American technology companies that design the most popular microchips and computer operating systems. In 2017, Microsoft announced that the company would create a "Windows 10 China Government Edition" for use by Chinese government agencies.

Although Deepin is not well publicized in the West, the company listens to its users and actively maintains the software such that the next major release is bigger, with a new format and plans to become a fully independent distribution.

Deepin has been based on Debian for a few years. This makes it easy to add additional software, including drivers, and the Deepin software store is biased towards Chinese apps, sites, and services, some of which are of little relevance to users in other countries.

The company announced that this would change:

"It should build on the Linux kernel and other open source components without relying on upstream distribution communities, and provide basic services and the foundation for establishing an independent upstream." In deepin 20.6, the maintainers have developed and integrated many convenient features, synchronized with the previous kernel version, fixed the underlying vulnerabilities, updated the stable kernel to V5.15.34, and improved system compatibility and security.

Along with its drive to become an independent distribution, deepin has also announced its own packaging format, Linglong. In addition to that, UOS has started to publish information about this format, as well as an application store "App Store" that supports filtering and sorting of search results with native Linux applications, Windows applications and Android applications so that users can quickly find the desired application and save time on search and retrieval.

Based on the core packages and some optional components, a completely new v23 repository is created at the preview stage. deepin will continue to learn from upstream distributions like Debian and Arch Linux.

New configuration and management of the browser's automatic data deletion function and default cookie encryption significantly improve the security of browser data.

Finally, if you are interested in knowing more about it, you can consult the announcement of the preview of Deepin 23, although I must mention that the page dedicated to the information on the change of the base, is not yet available.
