Diaspora will pass into the hands of the community

The founders of the social network Diaspora they will stop participating full time in the project. The idea was funded through Kickstarter two years ago by a group of New York University students seeking to create an alternative network to Facebook that was decentralized and worried about the Privacy.

The group announced today that "we will give control of Diaspora to the community." The co-founders, Maxwell Salzberg and Daniel Grippi, indicated that they will deliver a detailed report of how the USD $ 200.000 they received in donations was spent, and indicated that from now on they will work at Makr.io, a “meme generator” and their new venture. .

The “leaving it in the hands of the community” is often read as having abandoned the project and from now on it is not known what will happen. However, Salzberg and Grippi assured that "we will continue to be an important part of the community as founders, but we want to make sure we include all the people who care about Diaspora and want to see it succeed in the future."

As a Free Software social project, we have the obligation to take this project further for the good of the community that gathers around it. Leaving the decisions of the future of the project in the hands of the community is one of the great advantages of any FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) project, and we would like to offer that advantage to our users and developers. We will continue to be an important part of that community as the founders of it, but we want to make sure that we are including all those people who care about Diaspora and want to see it succeed in the future.

It will not be an immediate change. There are still many details to close. It will be a gradual process that will give more and more ground to the government by the community over time. The goal is to make this an entirely community-led project.

Will this be the end or the resurgence of the Diaspora?
