What should we know about VPS and WebHostings GNU / Linux?

When we want to have our own website, we all see ourselves in this question ... what do I buy?, A VPS (Virtual Private Server), a WebHosting ...? What's best for my site and not wasting money?

The first thing we have to be clear about is:what kind of website will ours be?

I will speak on behalf of <° Linux (http://desdelinux.net), a mostly informative website (for the moment), whose traffic is not yet considerable (compared to a friendly site like Artdesktop.com).

We are not a website with even 1000 unique visits a day, clarifying that unique visits is NOT the same as views, for example in the WordPress statistics the number of views appears, but not the number of unique visits 😉

As mentioned in pressitt.com, when it comes to knowing what we should select to avoid wasting our money, these values that are generally correct (since they are generic) usually help us:

  1. 0 - 300 unique visits per day => WebHosting.
  2. 300 - 5000 unique visits per day => VPS.
  3. 5000+ unique visits per day => Dedicated Server.

For our site, a Web Hosting for the moment it is enough, simply because it does not have a large number of visits yet 🙂 But ... What is a WebHosting?

Un Web Hosting it is quite simple to explain and understand. It is simply a server where we will locate our site, this server will NOT be controlled by us, we do not have administrative privileges on that server ... it is only a company / company that provides us with the service of publishing our website to the world.

Ok but, and then What is a VPS?

Un VPS is a Virtual Server. It is a virtual machine or PC that is inside a server in another country in the world, and on this computer (the virtual one) we can do whatever we want, we can install applications, configure a firewall, etc. etc. It's like having a real server on the internet, only with a little less hardware and at a much cheaper cost.

... Are there only VPS that work with GNU / Linux?

Re: NO.

Are also available VPS that work with Windows Server, highly NOT recommended. It happens that the support that our supplier / vendor can give us, in many cases is not as professional as it should be, and they tend to solve many problems or uncomfortable situations (however simple they may be) simply: «We must format and reinstall the VPS, save the data you do not want to lose«. If we add to this that they are usually worth almost twice as much as a VPS with the same hardware and benefits but using GNU / Linux, it is clearly better and wiser to choose a VPS with GNU / Linux, as we will have more benefits and freedoms.

In summary mode ...

If your website is new, and if you want to save some $, I recommend that you start in a WebHosting, then and only if your website grows enough, you can buy a VPS and in this way you will have more freedom and better performance.

But, the million dollar question ... Which webhosting provider do you recommend?

U.S (<° Linux) We purchased WebHosting services from a company in the beginning, limited bandwidth, limited space, and it wasn't exactly cheap. We did it due to inexperience, and the eagerness we had to publish the site ... fortunately, we were presented with the opportunity with the help of some friends (if by chance they read this, they know who they are and how grateful we are) to change provider. There we find excellent opinions on A2HostingHowever, we wanted to investigate more, when we saw that their support was certainly incredible (they support even Twitter, amazing), it allows HTTPS without the need to make additional payments, unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth use, and also allows us connect by SSH to their servers, at that moment we decided that it was the chosen one 🙂

Among its other qualities is the possibility of unlimited databases, FTP accounts, email accounts, etc etc ... we are more than delighted, all this for truly unbeatable prices, depending on the plan you want to buy, it can cost $ 3 a month , $ 5, or $ 7 a month, and they have unlimited resources from the cheapest plan.

~ »Acquire services from A2Hosting« ~

Anyway, I hope these somewhat general concepts and ideas help some. I have written this article thinking about the doubts and situations that we ourselves had in the beginning, so if any of you need help, have doubts, questions ... just leave a comment with them, we will help you 🙂

regards

    Unique visits is NOT the same as views, for example in WordPress statistics the number of views appears, but not the number of unique visits

    True, but how do you know how many unique visits you have? No matter how much calculation we do, it is something that cannot be known with certainty, come on, I think.

    On the other hand, I have always thought that paying for something that is virtual, like a blog, that is not real, because it has always seemed like bullshit ... No matter how much Dirtyboss and sefsinalas have tried to explain it to me, I do not find out anything

      With plugins of the same WordPress, or with data from Google Analytics. Basically, if X IP enters the site it is a unique visit, if that same IP continues to visit articles, it is not counted as more unique visits, but it is counted as views. Simple right? 🙂

      Make a site or blog if you know how to do it, then you should not pay, because you know how to create it yourself, now, that site must be on X internet server, that is what you pay, where to have the site / blog, who will give us space in HDD, where will the bandwidth come from for our website to be visited, etc 😉

        But even so WordPress and Blogger for example offer us space, little but they offer it for free, that's why I said it

          Yes, but you cannot have your own email, or your own domain ... you have a half identity, notice that if I wanted my blog http://kzkggaara.wordpress.com was http://kzkggaara.com, I would have to pay WordPress for that 😉

    Excellent article. I've already been through that. At first, I contracted out of inexperience with a provider whose services were expensive and the benefits were limited. The worst: Windows server. Later, I found a better provider and switched: better prices, better support, better features.

    I had already inquired about A2Hosting and it seems that I was correct: excellent service. I have also considered migrating to a VPS if my site grows, although at the moment it is still "puppy". Thank you very much for the information.

      A pleasure to know that it was helpful 😀
      The problem with VPS is the same, the price, because at least we (<° Linux) cannot afford this, incredible as it may seem ...
      But if you have a budget for a VPS, and with advanced knowledge of systems and networks, you can do wonders mara

      Greetings friend.
