The stable version could be arriving, if all goes well, next week

The Fedora Project unveiled recently the release of the beta version dand his next release of “FedoraLinux 37”, which is expected to arrive in late October 2022 with some of the latest GNU/Linux technologies.

Fedora Linux 37 expected provide official support for Raspberry Pi 4 with accelerated graphics and other improvements, support for the upcoming desktop environment GNOME 43 for Workstation edition, as well as the upcoming Linux 6.0 kernel. Meanwhile, the Fedora Linux 37 Spins edition is expected to ship with the KDE Plasma 5.26, Xfce 4.16, LXQt 1.1.0, MATE 1.26, and Cinnamon 5.4 desktop environments.

Fedora Linux 37 is probably the most anticipated GNU/Linux distribution of the year. Red Hat, a sponsor of the Fedora Project, announced Wednesday that the Fedora Linux 37 beta continues the team's efforts to bring users the latest and greatest innovations in the operating system, from the new GNOME desktop environment to new releases addressing enhancements, updates and more.

Main news in Fedora 37 Beta

This beta of Fedora Linux 37 includes GNOME 43, which adds a new security panel of the device in Settings to get more granular information about updates and status of hardware and firmware. More GNOME applications have also been ported to the latest version of the GTK Toolkit, which improves overall performance and gives popular apps a cleaner, more modern look. Considering that this is a beta version, the experience should be a bit better with the final version.

It is worth mentioning that if you are not a fan of GNOME, there are many alternatives. Also available are versions of KDE Plasma 5.26, MATE 1.26, Xfce 4.16, LXQt 1.10 and Cinnamon 5.4, as well as LXDE, the i3 tile window manager, and the OLPC project's Sugar education environment.

Another novelty presented is the Raspberry Pi 4 compatibility, because Fedora Linux 37 Beta introduces official support for Raspberry Pi 4 with accelerated graphics. Until now, there were no FOSS drivers for much of the Pi's hardware, but Fedora Linux 37 will include accelerated 3D drivers for OpenGL-ES and Vulkan. If you don't want to wait for the final version, you can test the operation with Raspberry Pi with the beta version. Apart from that, you can also expect improvements for the Raspberry Pi 3 and Zero 2 W series.

beta version also notes the promotion of two popular Fedora variants to official editions. Editions are preconfigured to meet specific user needs, such as a developer workstation (Fedora Workstation), a Linux server (Fedora Server), or an Internet of Things (IoT) device (Fedora IoT). These specific versions of Fedora are already tuned to meet the general needs of these uses; users don't need to extensively tweak settings or add components (but can still if they want).

With Fedora Linux 37 Beta, the team adds Fedora CoreOS and (re)adds Fedora Cloud Base to these existing editions. Fedora CoreOS provides a Linux operating system designed for containerized workloads, with the ability to automatically update and scale to meet the demands of these applications. Fedora Cloud Base may look like the old Fedora Cloud Edition, and the team thinks it is. This is a Fedora image designed to create general-purpose virtual machines (VMs) in public and private clouds (such as OpenStack).

Among other notable changes, Fedora Linux 37 will remove support for ARMv7 architecture (ARM32/ARMhfp) and will introduce a TEST-FEDORA39 policy to keep up with the latest crypto trends, but this feature is scheduled for release in Fedora Linux 39. Fedora Linux 37 Beta brings other technical improvements such as Python 3.11, Perl 5.36, and Golang 1.19.

Download and try Fedora Linux 37 Beta

The final release of Fedora Linux 37 is expected on October 25, 2022, if all goes according to plan. Otherwise, it will be delayed for a week until all critical bugs are fixed.

Until then, you can give it a try by downloading the Fedora Linux 37 beta ISO image from the official website. You can also download official versions of Fedora Linux Spins with graphical environments KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, LXQt, MATE, LXDE, SoaS or i3 from the dedicated page, as well as Fedora Linux Labs editions.
