Firefox Logo

The new version of Firefox 87 has already been released along with an update to long-term support version 78.9.0 and in this new version various novelties are presented such as show labels in the highlighted mode in search, improvements to developer tools and more.

In addition to innovations and bug fixes, Firefox 87 has fixed 12 vulnerabilities, of which 7 are marked as dangerous. 6 vulnerabilities (compiled for CVE-2021-23988 and CVE-2021-23987) are caused by memory problems, such as buffer overflows and access to already freed memory areas.

Main new features of Firefox 83

In this new version of the browser when using the search function and activate highlighting mode for all found matches, scroll bar now shows labels to indicate the position of the found keys.

Items that are used infrequently have been removed from the Library menu, since in the Library menu only links to bookmarks, history and downloads remain (synced tabs, recent bookmarks, and pocket list are removed). In the screenshot below, on the left, the status is as it was, and on the right, it is as it was in Firefox 87:

The web developer menu has been greatly simplified: the individual links to the tools (inspector, web console, debugger, network style error, performance, storage inspector, accessibility and application) have been replaced with a common element of web developer tools.

As well the help menu was simplified, from which links to support pages, keyboard shortcuts, and guidebooks have been removed and are now available on the Get Help overview page. The button to import from another browser has been removed.

SmartBlock mechanism added, which resolves issues on sites resulting from blocking external scripts in private browsing mode or by activating enhanced blocking of unwanted content (strict).

SmartBlock automatically replaces the scripts used for tracking with stubs to ensure proper site loading. Stubs have been prepared for some popular scripts to track users listed on the Disconnect list, including scripts with Facebook, Twitter, Yandex, Vkontakte, and Google widgets.

Also, it is mentioned that for a small percentage of users, The mode Fission enabled with the implementation of a multithreaded architecture modernized for a bigger block page. When Fission is enabled, pages from different sites are always allocated in memory by different processes, each of which uses its own isolated sandbox.

At the same time, the division into processes is not carried out by tabs, but by domains, which allows you to further isolate the content of external scripts and iframe blocks.

For web developers, in page inspection mode, the ability to simulate media queries is implemented "preferred color scheme" to test dark and light designs without changing the design themes in the operating system. To allow the simulation of dark and light themes, buttons with the image of the sun and the moon have been added in the upper right corner of the toolbar for web developers.

As well Improved handling of inactive CSS rules in CSS inspection mode is highlighted. In particular, the "table-layout" property is now disabled for non-table elements, and the "scroll-padding- *" properties are marked as inactive for non-scrollable elements. Removed wrong marking of "text overflow" properties for some values.

Finally it is mentioned that the branch of Firefox 88, which has entered beta testing, stands out for its support for pinch scaling in touch panels in Linux with graphical environments based on the Wayland protocol and the inclusion of support for the AVIF (AV1 Image Format) image format by default, which uses intra-frame compression technologies of the AV1 video encoding format.

I don't usually use this browser, but researching it and testing it a bit I loved it. I think the most appropriate thing for me as a student in this new update has been the highlighting on the pages when searching for keywords. On the other hand, the improvements in private browsing are very timely and adequate.
