FLISoL 2014 in Havana, capital of Cuba

As every year, the FLISoL, acronym for Latin American Free Software Festival, is celebrated. As its name indicates, it is a party for Free Software, an event in which both software and knowledge are shared, here is what was at FLISoL 2014 in Cuba, specifically in the capital, Havana.

The past years Elav, me and other friends from GUTL and other communities in the country have put our time, effort and will to make this event the best possible, on previous occasions we celebrated it in the Central Palace of the JovenClub, this year we changed the venue of the event because this time it was not in the capital (it was in Granma) and in addition, we also changed the location here in Havana, this time we have the Planetary.

FLISOL 2014

This year, as I said, we were in the Planetarium, here are some photos of the decoration itself:

At the same time there were obviously lectures, the same ones… guess in which room they were held? Inside the Sun.

There are stairs through which you climb skirting that huge yellow sphere that represents the star king. Then, there is a door through which you enter until you reach a relatively large room with capacity for 65 seated people, several more standing. In the same speeches or conferences on various topics of Free Software were given.

Screencast

Elav and I thought of filming a screencast + webcam to talk a bit about the event itself, to film a bit of what was happening, etc. We are still in the process of finishing it, and I estimate that in a day or two we will upload it to 10 minutes with DesdeLinux. Here are some photos of the process:

Communities in FLISoL 2014

As I said at the beginning, the GUTL (Group of Users of Free Technologies) which is located here in Havana (and Cuba in general) coordinates everything related to these events. However, we are always joined by other friends, communities that also make this type of event crowded and interesting.

For example, we have the guys from Firefoxmanía, who always give us stickers and the odd pullover. We could also see the new improvements that FirefoxOS includes (I actually had in my hands a smartphone with FirefoxOS 2.0, which is, honestly, very beautiful), etc.

In the gallery below there are photos of the group as well as the gifts 😉

The event also featured the participation of the boys from humans, SWL community of the UCI (University of Informatics Sciences). Unfortunately right now I don't have any photos that we took with them; I hope they will put them on your site soon.

In addition, this year we have the visit of Guillermo Movia (Mozilla Community Manager for Latin America) as well as a representative of the ASLE, the Free Software Association of Ecuador:

Elav, KZKG ^ Gaara and representative of the Free Software Association of Ecuador

Do you copy?

In Cuba the Internet is not as popular as in other countries, here less than 10% of the population has access to the network of networks, not to mention that the download speed is simply terrible. That is why in these events we share ISOs, repositories, software in general, etc. in the LAN that we set up, with Wifi access and everything.

This year we had Debian repos (stable and testing), as well as ArchLinux and the always popular and in-demand repositories for the latest Ubuntu version, 14.04.

In addition, we share several GBs of video tutorials, PDF documentation, magazines, etc. Everything is in order to help little by little the information related to the subject reaches people, even when they do not yet have full access to the network of networks.

Gifts

Like every year, some gifts, in addition to a diploma or certificate, were given to the people who helped us and made FLISoL a success.

The boys (and girls, there are women, eh!) Of Firefoxmania gave me a nice pullover with the FirefoxOS logo which I will not use, but that's another story LOL !. However, those of Firefoxmanía as the representative of the ASLE (whose name I do not remember, sorry) gave us stickers of Firefox, FirefoxOS, Drupal, GNU, FSF, as you can see in the photos below.

Until the next!

Well nothing more to add.

Next year we also plan to help organize the event, since we have several ideas that this year we could not specify and we save them for the next.

If I forget something or someone I apologize. Anyway you can always review the site of GUTL for more details.

By the way, she was interviewed that day (along with elav and others) for a news report, here is the photo:

No not at all, not her at all. It is a coincidence that I am a girl and use Debian, but they are two different girls, they are not the same.

You saved yourself from being locked in a classroom in San Marcos (to tell the truth, the expos were straws, but they were an insufferable confinement).

Fortunately, is on UStream the FLISoL expo in Lima.

      1.    Raphael Mardechai said

Man, at least in the San Marcos xD. in Trujillo it was sponsored organized and I don't know what else by the UCV and its Free Software community! What worse can anything be?

          I know that feels, bro.

I am using Firefox 31.0a1 and I have not had a single problem. In fact, I've been using alpha versions of Firefox for months, when the stable version was 21, I was already using 29, and I've never had problems.

        2.    Raphael Mardechai said

"It closes me all the time" was a bit exaggerated, it only closed once, when I was on top of the windows xD

From what you say, it seems that it was interesting. I attended this one ( http://www.flisol-parana.com.ar/ ) in the afternoon. You always learn something new and share knowledge in these talks, but I have the feeling that the people here are not interested in the subject or maybe they are not aware of it. I always see the same faces.

Hi. Pardon my ignorance. But I have a question…. do Cubans have internet access ???
    Saludos y gracias

ps: if anyone knows about this type of activity in Buenos Aires, please let me know.

    1.    Raphael Mardechai said

Uncle, FLISOL in Argentina was April 26 (http://flisol.info/FLISOL2014/Argentina).

And I suppose that if the Cubans have Internet ... if not, how the hell are the main admins of this blog on the INTERNET xD Cuban?

      1.    mmm said

Thanks for the FLISOL data …… .. hahaha I was late.

Regarding whether Cubans have the Internet or not, I was wondering exactly why. Because, as you say, the main admins are Cubans ... and as I understood from comments from some close Cubans (but not people I speak often) they told me that they did NOT have internet, and that those who had it got it "from the left" ... They told me that they had "last generation" cell phones but no Wi-Fi ... so it was like the last generation phones were half the dope ……. that is why I ask the Cubans who write here ... how is the situation regarding the internet? (It is just to know, and understand a little what happens with this and Flisol or these types of activities)

        Saludos y gracias

Both elav and I are Cuban, we were born and live in Cuba. However, luckily in our work centers they give us access to the internet, but not at home.

Therefore, we only have internet at work, which makes us stay offline much of the time, however we try to do the best we can, I don't think things have gone so bad for us.

The internet is really slow, but that is another matter.

    2.    octoberfest said

      Hello:
I am Cuban and I can tell you that it is as the KZKG post says ^ Gaara, less than 10% of the population has access to the internet and of that 10%, 97% of those who have internet, it is because they work in state companies , and there are few companies in the state that have an internet, and all this is with a super slow internet, I tell you that it is a luxury to have a speed of 20 MBits in a company with 512 connected workers.
And you will be amazed with what I am going to tell you, if you want to have internet in your home, on your own, you cannot, because that service is not offered, only to people who work for the state, and after a thousand paperwork and investigations, and they give you a connection by modem (56K) or by ADSL of 128 or 256. Ahhh, if you are a foreigner, if you can request Internet access, you have that right, Cubans, no! 🙁 and it is like 100 dollars a month, a connection by modem (56K).
If you have not been surprised, now I will: We do not have internet on cell phones through the company that does not offer mobile phone service (ETECSA), GREAT efforts are being made, so that perhaps in the course of 2014, TREAT that there is internet on cell phones and at home Source:

      http://www.cubadebate.cu/noticias/2014/03/11/etecsa-anuncia-nuevos-servicios-para-2014
This is how we Cubans are with the Internet issue.
If you have more questions, ask what you want, I will gladly answer you.
      Salu2.

Hello! Thank you very much for your answer. Although he made it clear to me that before asking read ... hehe, I asked without seeing that the article talked a little about the subject. Thank you very much for your time and for the clarifications.

Imagine creating, growing and then maintaining DesdeLinux with this very poor bandwidth… heh… heh…

          1.    mmm said

Just yesterday I was talking to my girlfriend about that ... it's impressive, hey! the truth that is unimaginable. The force they put into the matter is incredible.
I lived in Cuba my childhood (up to 10 years) I lived in Alamar. I have the slight memory of a computer that had a common television as its output. In the same vein, I remember a neighbor who had painted his TV with three colored lines (to make it color TV) ... nothing, nonsense, at last. I didn't have video games of any kind and I played in the street, very happy… we left in '91… I can't imagine what it will be like now.
            A greeting!

          2.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

hahahahaha yes, we've seen many of those things around here ... and the stories I can tell you are even funnier hahaha.

I was born in 89, in the middle of the «special period», the stories that I can tell you I already tell you… of death.

Nowadays I (and elav) are that type of people who have a high level of knowledge (yes, here I sent / dev / null my modesty) and they make us job offers, but ... essential requirement to work anywhere: Full internet access!

Greetings partner, from one Cuban from here to another who is in a better life 😀

          3.    Joaquin said

Well, the truth is that the effort they are making to keep the blog always up to date is admirable.

In my case, another problem that adds to the low bandwidth is that the large Internet provider companies only provide their service in large cities, so for those of us who live outside the coverage area, we have no other option. To top it all, and although it may seem ironic, I am paying the same as a 3MB connection from those large companies.

The only good thing that I rescue is that when faced with a problem, the solution is quick and without many procedures. Just call the technician and in a matter of minutes everything works again.

When I was in 2007, when creating my first blog, 512 Kbps seemed like the most fantastic thing to do to edit your blog on Blogger (I did not know WordPress in depth at the time).

      3.    eliotime3000 said

In Peru, we have just waited a decade for the price of ADSL bandwidth to fall, which initially came to us with the speed you describe, and yes, I had to deal with that bandwidth (Thanks, Telefónica).

With the arrival of Telmex, it is where at least cheaper access was given (note that 512 Kbps costs us the "enviable" figure of US $ 17.90 per month, which seemed practically impossible more than 10 years ago, in which, the bandwidth rate was pretty much the same as what you describe).

And by the way, is it true that the Internet booths in Cuba have a version of Firefox, which does not allow copypaste?

That state companies have the internet is a tremendous achievement considering the inhuman and ruthless blockade of the us

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Excuse me but, the blockade has nothing, NOTHING to do here.

Cuba's internet goes through other channels, satellite until now. In fact, since 2011 a fiber optic cable was put from Venezuela to Cuba, precisely for that, but "to have internet and not depend on the Americans with their cruel blockade" ... in the middle of 2014, the internet is still almost a bad word here. I wonder, wasn't the cable going to solve all the problems?

Obviously not, so the NO internet access has nothing to do with a cable that comes from the US or Venezuela, but rather that other people simply do not want (or believe it necessary) that we citizens here have internet at home.

So, the blockade has absolutely nothing to do here 😉

    2.    eliotime3000 said

The land of Simón Bolívar is giving Bolivarian Internet to Cuba, and as here it is well known that the Latin American bureaucracy has become greedy with the means that are much more useful, that means is stigmatized and they do not give them another way to communicate at the level of communities.

In Peru, the problem is not only on the part of the State itself, but also on the part of Telefónica, which does not fully distribute the Internet (the best speeds are in the capital and coastal departments, obviously, but in the rest of the country as the Andean and Amazon region, they have to put up with it as in the cradle of Salsa and Celia Cruz).
