FreeCiv & FreeCol: Civilization & Colonization for Linux

Those who ever played Civilization and / or at Colonization they will be glad to know that they exist clones of these games for Linux. Both are in a fairly advanced stage of development. They are just as addicting and entertaining as the original versions. 🙂

FreeCiv

Freeciv is a turn-based strategy game, inspired by Civilization. It is free software, it is licensed under the GNU GPL, in addition to being free. This included in many Linux distributions.

You can play both in mode single player as in mode multi-player, over the Internet or a local area network. Version 2 also allows you to play directly against the Artificial Intelligence interpreted by the computer.

The game begins in the year 4000 BC. C., each player is the leader of a nomadic tribe that must settle and found cities, researching technologies, developing infrastructures or wonders, establish diplomatic relations and create armies.

The game ends when:

  • a single civilization survives as the others are eradicated,
  • when a ship is sent to colonize an outer planet,
  • or when a certain date is exceeded, in which the player with the highest score will finally win, depending on the size of the state, the health of the citizens, the culture and the scientific advances achieved, each player is scored.

freecol

FreeCol is a turn-based strategy and empire building game. A Colonization multiplatform clone by Sid Meier. It is a free and open source game. It is distributed under the GNU license General Public License (GNU GPL). The programming is done in Java.

FreeCol begins in the year 1492. With only a few settlers, the player must build the New World colonies, fighting for power with other rival European colonies. The player builds his colonies with the help of the King, until he no longer needs that help, which means that the need for independence will grow. The ultimate goal of the game is precisely to achieve that independence, resisting the attacks (financial and military) of the King.

The player can trade with Europe, collecting natural resources and also producing some basic products. It goes without saying that, as in the real world, the higher added value the products have, the more expensive they will be sold and, consequently, the better the economic situation (and independence) of the colony.
