My Computer Girlfriends: Romance and Adventure Story

Next I will tell you how my relationship has been with some of the GNU / Linux distributions that I have used. This is an article I wrote a long time ago on my old blog and I have modified it a bit. If they thought I was going to talk about my "real" girlfriendsWell, turn on the TV and look for gossip programs because this is not the case 😛

Like many of the computer lovers of my generation, my first romances in this world were about MS-DOS. It was a short romance, but I learned to give my first kisses (as who says). Typing those commands to create, copy folders, among other things, for me was the best.

Then on an excursion I met who would be my first computer girlfriend, something more serious, her name was Windows 95 and I was in awe of her, and we had a long relationship of 3 years. It was my first formal girlfriend.

The relationship was in decline when I met a new girl on a bus in 98, but after two years I also broke up with her for being "mentally vulnerable" and in 2000, I started a new relationship that turned out to be worse.

Luckily in those years I was a good looking man, and what at that moment, I thought would be the love of my life, came into my life: Windows XP. But beauty is not everything, our relationship suffered from its ups and downs due to the number of mistakes she made and the number of intruders she let into my house.

Despite that, I came to dominate her quite well, but deep down I always knew that she was a lost cause, she dominated me. I was more or less stable with her until I got tired. I confess that I learned a lot from her, it was an unforgettable experience, but by then I never left home, I was too comfortable and I didn't know that there was a place to flirt called the Internet full of varieties.

I decided to get out of my comfort zone and find a new love. My relationship with XP was in decline, and by chance at a bar counter I met a girl (who turned out to be pretty, but it was a lot of blah blah blah, but little action) called Ubuntu. When I realized that this was not my thing, I convinced her to introduce me to a friend, cousin or sister ... the very slut introduced me to her mother. He told me to wait at the bar and went looking for her.

As I waited to meet the parent of Ubuntu, I began to see women of all kinds and types. I was in awe of Mac OSIt was truly beautiful, classy, very different from Windows. The crazy idea of making her fall in love crossed my mind but I was able to realize with a short conversation that the girl liked expensive gifts and it was very expensive.

I thought Ubuntu had been kidding me, as it took a long time to appear, so I went out to tour the place. So it was there, hidden in a corner, as if saddened, when I met a very simple woman, not at all conceited, pretty, without many pretensions, but that yes, she exuded security and was ideal for a stable relationship.

I approached her cautiously and discovered that it was not like Windows either "something that made me deeply happy" was something new, unknown and I decided to start a conversation with her. As the conversation intensified, I was discovering that it took me a bit of work to understand it, and it is logical, it was too adapted to Windows, but I had nothing to lose and I took a risk, I gave it my all.

We were talking all night. He told me about his family, big, very big, in fact he had many cousins. I asked her her name and I knew she was the ideal woman, the one I was looking for. Debian, he said, and there I was with my mouth open, I was stunned.

She talked non-stop about her loved ones, sisters and cousins, SUSE, Centos, Mandriva, Mandrake, Knoppix, Fedora, in short an immense list ... and that they were all born beautiful and strong thanks to the genes of her father, a man named Kernel Linux. And then in an unexpected twist he told me about his daughter, Ubuntu. Then I understood everything. In fact, now that I knew it I realized that they were actually very similar, only that Ubuntu was full of makeup.

Thus began our relationship, on a stormy night in a bar. She was my girlfriend for many years, and over time she had changed, she had become more beautiful so I proposed to her and she accepted. It was a nice wedding where my Debian dressed in KDE for the ceremony, GNOME for the dance, and for the wedding night, she wore brand underwear XFCE.

It was so happy! But I'm a free spirit, and after a long, long time, the relationship became too boring. I already have a few years and I decided to look for a younger, more current girl, and that is why today I maintain my relationship with ArchLinux. But as in any relationship, nothing is perfect. He has insisted on putting things in my house that I do not like, something new that he bought in the store called Systemshit, I mean, Systemd. We'll see how long it lasts.

Use BSD if you don't like systemd is a very good option.

I love FreeBSD, especially for servers, but on desktop things it has quite a few drawbacks. Hibernating for example is difficult on a laptop and practically impossible on a desktop computer.

Great story, could you ask for some advice for mine? At the moment I am with Ubuntu but I don't like it at all, I am looking for something that is very beautiful and stable. I'm looking at elementary as a possible solution, what advice can you give me?

    1.    dario said

elementary is derived from ubuntu that is, it is the same with other icons and things like that, if you want something stable use debian. nice you can you can use cinnamon as desktop that comes nice by default and is very customizable

    2.    Gabo said

good decision, I did that more than 1 year ago and I do not regret it, even if it is derived nothing to do ñ.ñ

Hello, I really liked the article. The approach you make to the subject, sometimes very technical, of computing; as if every operating system you've ever owned was a girlfriend, it was pretty cool.

Now I see from what you drop in passing on your last line that you prefer initd over systemd. I would be very grateful if you would clarify this opinion. If it is by preference or for real reasons. I am very interested in knowing your opinion about it.

    Greetings,
    mhyst

    1.    elav said

Well, it is very simple. I don't like that Systemd wants to be initd (which is fine so far), control the network, and everything it wants to control. I don't like binary logs. I do not like that its creator goes through the lining of bug reports, and that some of them are passed over as if the user were to blame. I like the philosophy of Unix, even though Linux is not Unix: do only one thing, but do it well.

That's what happens to me with Systemd .. 😉

      regards

      1.    dario said

You're just jealous because systemd has them all xD.

haha good story but long. Here's my story: I started my idyllic romance with gnu / linux with a girl called ubuntu with a nickname oeneric ocelot, a year later I decided to find another called linux mint maya what I liked about her was cinnamon.

Already last year I dared to find an adventure with arch or rather with her little sister manjaro, as I would get bored with her I decided that linux mint had to grow our relationship and I went to get no one from there. For several years, or rather the past, I already had my eye on those called suse, centos, kaos. Although in the bottom of my heart I knew that I could not get rid of mint by hosting Rebecca for her colorful and new themes.

Finally, I also have my ex-partners in 64-bit format thanks to her boyfriend named secure boot.

for now I'm dating, flirting, fucking (in passing turning it around) ubuntu and all his sisters and cousins, to tame the mother I must have mastered karma and incidentally put on a pair of steel-tipped chimps to dominate her well but I lose out with a tremendous woman…. (:
Seriously elav the dark side of tuxland (redhat) is involved to the top with the famous systemd, which is the same as the NSA ????

So elav not dating with windows 3.11? haha,
I remember that I left win 98 for red hat 5 with kde 3.5 that came stuck with a magazine (dvd), but I could never make it speak (I did not know how to activate the sound): C

my first girlfriend and contact was with windows 95 although it lasts little, from there to 98, millenium, but all those were very temporary, then came XP which was my first serious relationship until windows 7 replaced it. and 3 years ago I met mint who was the first in her family, then I went through many that lasted 2 or 3 weeks, debian, openSUSE, fedora, and 90% of her cousins until I decided to fight for arch and she has me conquered , and currently you saw openbox, it teaches too much but it covers just enough and I like that

Although at the moment I'm cheating on my girl with a high-ranking prostitute from work (Mac). I started fed up with Windows, vi $ ta with Ubuntu, then I went with her younger sister Mint 9, and since now I have not left her with XFCE, all my PhD work has been excellent !!!, I am a simple man, I prefer to sacrifice makeup for performance ... I accept it, I have flirted with some others, but I stay with my mouse ...

If you know that one of the daughters of Arch Linux, the increasingly sensual Manjaro comes with OpenRC instead of Systemd as the boot system? It would be a more beautiful way to wake up in the morning, I mean ... 😉

Normally as we get older we should stop flirting so much and settle down. But this is just the opposite. The first loves MS-DOS, Windows 286 - 3.1 - 3.11,…, were the longest. Well, there was one that didn't last me at all. That Unix. I left her on edge. We did not understand each other. With some I even had children who are still running around.
The truth is that I have had a season that I have flirted with anyone who passed by. What if Mint with all kinds of little dresses, Cinnamon, XFCE, KDE, what if SolykXK, what if Fedora, ...
But it exhausted me to have a girlfriend in each port, so I've been with Debian for a few months now, the Gnome clothes suit her wonderfully. I am super in love and I see a future in the relationship.

I ended my relationship with arch in 2012, the year of systemd, but it was for other reasons, especially it was because of the resignation that Linux users have to get used to. We have to resign ourselves that x distro works well but lacks A thing. Distro z has that A thing but it doesn't work as well and / or is missing B thing. That is to resign oneself, to resign oneself to using a distro knowing that A does not work and that specific software is missing (Only available in Windows / OSX), most of them are deceived and say "There is anyway why I need X things to work for me" . Not to mention the poor quality desktop environments and programs that we are used to. Not for nothing does almost everyone end up going to OSX when they get the chance. Systemd seems to me that it will bring a bit of order (as they say) and will end up unifying the architecture a bit, hopefully it will serve to improve hardware and software support a bit, eliminate bugs, etc. Anyway, Linux is excellent for servers that I do not deny.

Well, when I saw that my relationships with Windows were all the same and I only changed my makeup, I met Mandrake, pretty, simple, industrious and from a family of ancestry one day she told me that she was going to start exercising and that she would learn to dance samba, she began to Wearing that sexy Brazilian lingerie brand Conectiva and changing her name to Mandriva, everything was happiness until they began to give her an air of greatness and she was losing humility ... then she became bipolar, then with a double personality: Mandriva distant and haughty, and Mageia who She believed in witchcraft and even alchemy, so I decided to give her sister Fedora a chance, I always believed that she would be a difficult and pretentious girl, but after a few years of happy relationship I realize that she is a studious, hard-working girl , stable and that you just have to dedicate quality time to it so that it gives you the best of it. What is your family rich? yes, but they have not given him anything, Fedora has made his own history, that if taking advantage of his father's contacts 😛
