I was talking to a colleague about File Managers and I decided to give a chance to Marlin since it is the perfect mix between Nautilus y Thunar and although I consider that it is not yet 100% mature, it can already be used. The installation on Debian Testing I did it from the repositories of Hadret like is logic.
I only have to do that Xfce take it as File manager default. Also, with some themes it doesn't look like it should, as in the case of ambience (notice the View Mode buttons).
It is true, it is not 100% mature ... but by far it is much better than Nautilus.
I installed it in Linux Mint as a default file manager and I'm not sorry.
Too bad it doesn't have an integrated search engine
I am tied to nautilus by its built-in search engine
I started out using Marlin as the default file manager in Xfce. It's fast, lightweight, has tabs, etc.
However, after using it for a while I discovered that the eyelashes were not as necessary as I thought (Were Thunar devs right?).
I know it is recent software but there is something I cannot stand about Marlin. The file renaming option is definitely crap, Thunar wins in this detail by a landslide even at the cost of opening a new window. In the case of Marlin, if the names are very long, when selecting them to change them, they are not shown in their entirety and in the final part of the name it is "blind".
Regarding the View Mode buttons, I don't consider them too remarkable either, in Thunar you can select them with a menu and they don't "mess up" the interface. Also, Marlin's detailed view is "not very detailed."
As I have already said, it is obvious that these are details that will be polished in successive versions (the current one is 0.1). It's definitely not going to replace Thunar on my Xfce just yet, but I'll keep an eye on the various posts from its developer. You never know.
Greetings (and I apologize for the written roll).
You're right in everything you say. The only thing I don't share is the eyelashes, because they are very necessary for me. 😀
Does this manager have the option to split the panel like F3 in Nautilus?
Well, I tried Marlin and I was not convinced…. I continue with my Thunar ... that the only thing missing is the double tab and the folder sharer so that the Windows users can enter my pc.
I leave you a phrase that I don't know if someone else has said it, but it occurred to me:
"Men don't share, they host" 😀
If you want to put something for others to download, use HTTP.
pokerface.
Dolphin Rules !!!
* runzzz….
When I connected via ssh in Marlin, it didn't let me save the place, so I didn't have to write all the data again.
Tried it once on Ubuntu. In general it seems to me that it is going well, sometimes you feel some… lag? It is still on the right track. Meanwhile, I continue with Thunar on Debian.
