Available Gnome 3.4 with interesting news

To the joy of the users of Gnome, the version 3.4 This Desktop Environment and it comes loaded with interesting news and changes in the design of some applications, an effort made by 1.275 approximately people who have made 41.000 changes and improvements.

Many new features have been added for developers, but I will only comment on some of the changes that for me are the most relevant for the user.

Animated Background

Now depending on the time of day, the background of Gnome it will change, being brighter and more radiant during the day, and darker and darker at night.

Redesign for Web (aka Epiphany)

Epiphany, the web browser of Gnome has been renamed to «Website«. In English it sounds very nice to say "Open the web" but in Spanish it doesn't seem like much to say "Open the / the Web". Or if? Anyway, the most relevant change in this application is its redesign, adding a "Super Menu" and a completely redesigned toolbar.

Applications menu

These menus, labeled with the name of the application, can be seen in the top bar, and provide new space for options that affect the entire application, such as preferences and documentation.

Contacts

The main content of the contact list has been improved, as well as the contact details. Contacts includes a number of new features, including online linking suggestions and a new avatar picker.

Video calls

In this version Empathy gets a new interface for voice and video calls, messaging support for Windows Live and the chat of Facebook, the accounts dialog has been partially redesigned and integration with Contacts.

Other improvements

  • The Nautilus file manager includes an undo function, allowing you to revert a change you make. Ideal for correcting mistakes.
  • The Sound Juicer CD ripper has a new feature to get metadata that provides improved support for multi-disc albums.
  • The gedit text editor already has native support for Mac OS X and GNOME.
  • The Cheese webcam photo booth now uses WebM as the default video format (instead of Theora).
  • The games have been modernized. Status bars have been removed, application menus have been added, and more.
  • System Monitor now supports group control.
  • The Image Viewer (generally called "Eye of GNOME") has a new metadata sidebar. This makes it easier to browse images and view their properties at the same time.
  • Now it is possible to use Evolution to connect to servers Kolab Groupware. Multiple Kolab accounts can be used at the same time. Disconnected mode, extended free / busy lists, and sync conflict detection and resolution are also fully supported.
  • Evolution's account setup wizard will automatically detect the most common email providers, simplifying the setup of your email account. As an added value, it also allows you to reorder your email accounts in the sidebar.

The gnome appearance did not convince me, I find the adwaita theme unfortunate and what I find most unfortunate is the slowness of the application search engine, when you want to search by name ...

Completely agree with you. It even seems to me that they should work even harder on Nautilus because it is still quite far from the version 2.x of GNOME, although we must not lose sight of all those improvements that it shows us elav they are good enough.

It is progressing well, but in my opinion it still has a long way to go. The truth is that I would like to test it intensively, but in Arch it does not go even three with the Catalyst driver -which I need for KDE-. Obviously, this is ATI's fault, not Gnome's.

Today, at the environment level, I would stick with KDE or XFCE -which I have seen very good details-. Cinnamon also promises, and Unity is there for whoever likes it. How many alternatives!

And if you add some more desks, more variety still! like Razor Qt, LXDE, Cream DE, Enlightement… .it's what's cool, quality and quantity in abundance

Try gnome 3 with xf86-video-ati. It is going to show.

Maybe I'm the old-fashioned one, although I don't think so, I'm 20 years old but I like XFCE more Or Lxde or kde or Gnome 2.x even Cinnamon seems great to me, what I don't like about gnome 3 is that it is not configurable like gnome2 or other desktop systems that I mention even better unity than gnome3.

Maybe it's a matter of taste but I don't like gnome 3 at all so much that my LMDE has Debian Squeezy repos and when Wheezy is stable I'll switch to it with either the LXDE XFCE desktop.

I do not know gnome3 does not convince me although the 3.4 improved a little compared to the previous one but it still does not convince me.

Interesting, I would like to try it but it does not go with my Ati card.

I don't like it 🙁 cinnamon is the perfect alternative for the GTK - unity is also cool but it's a matter of taste and colors 😉

I don't know but I'm tempted to use KDE .. but I don't know what distro to use with KDE

Anyone but the one we know, not for nothing, but because everyone will agree with me that it is by far the worst distro with KDE.

Try for example Fedora, which uses KDE as its main environment.

      1.    jamin samuel said

Fine .. I'll try it to see how it goes

      2.    Algave said

Fedora doesn't use KDE as main environment, it uses Gnome 3

        1.    Courage said

Error, use KDE, what happens is that the Gnome is also very careful.

What happens with OpenSUSE, Mandriva or Mageia

I recommend that if you are going to use KDE you lean towards Chakra Linux is very stable and is 100% Qt, without any Gtk 🙂

Call me crazy, but I love Gnome Shell !!! I love that clean, aesthetic and minimalist interface, all its customization, its extensions, the app launcher, the way it manages the desktops, its native integration with Google Calendar, Google Docs, with the Messenger and even with Facebook and Twitter through Gwibber ... well. I know there are many details to correct, but seeing the progress they are really encouraging. I agree that Adwita is not exactly the best of the themes, but there are a variety of themes to choose from, I personally am one of the first things that I change, among other things. I have been using Gnome Shell for almost a year now and I am very satisfied. But it's the great thing about Linux, the alternatives and the freedom to choose. Long live OpenSource!

    Hey.
Well, I love Gnome-shell and especially in small 10.1 ″ netbooks like mine. Now I can only get into Gnome-classic, the change from Gnome 3.2.1 to 3.4 in Debian Wheezy is getting really screwed up because of the endless dependencies.
I'm still waiting for an update to finally arrive so that I can have Gnome-shell again in this promising version 3.4.
    Regards…

It is nice to hear that there are many possibilities in environments, freedom of environments, etc., everything is very beautiful. I also respect people who use Gnome 3.4, but I believe that (as it is being verified) they have taken a wrong path and philosophies for this desktop.
We are already on 3.6 and in September we will have 3.6, and little change is in sight in the near future.
What is important in a desktop is usability and the interaction that is created between the user and the system so that the user adapts the system to their needs. Well, Gnome 3.x doesn't do that, and it just forces the user to adapt to their environment ... very bad.
Then what is that of installing tools and extensions to improve the system ?. When I acquire a system, an environment, or whatever, I acquire it completely, and I don't have to be downloading utilities, add-ons and extensions in some way "vital" for the daily use of the desktop.
And let's not talk about customization in Gnome 3.4 or the simplicity of the system options as a whole ...
And this is a sum and continues with this desktop, to which I tried to give several opportunities like Gnome-ro that I went, but that after two days I had to uninstall because it did not suit my needs.
I do not doubt its operation on touch devices, tablets, etc ..., but as a desktop PC environment I do not even want it in paint.
It is an environment that is too simple for my liking, too closed, and not very powerful in knowing how to take advantage of the system's functionalities.
I already switched to KDE a long time ago and it is a desktop marvel, and I assure that I could do normal desktop operations faster in KDE than with Gnome.
And in addition, KDE has the plasma Netbook, which changes the KDE environment with one click to adapt it to a laptop, netbook, etc.

My friend, what is the problem with extensions? Did someone use gnome 2 as it comes by default? nobody. Everything was added (say compiz, emerald, cairo dock) so I don't know why now gnome shell should not use extensions

I wanted to say that Gnome is on 3.4, and 3.6 for September.
