GNOME puts its tokens on Wayland, not Mir

Wayland is definitely the great promise of these times in the Linux field. This is the next generation replacement for the old beat-up X.Org server. However, to be really popular, it requires push from a huge project, like GNOME. Above all, considering that Canonical put their tokens on Mir ...

“Many of us have quietly assumed that Wayland is the future graphics system on Linux and that at some point everyone would use it. But to reach its full potential, it needs momentum from a full desktop project. I think GNOME is the right project for this and now is the right time to use Wayland. I am confident that the Wayland and X communities can help us achieve this goal, ”Matthias Clasen said in an email to the GNOME community a couple of weeks ago.

To bring the entire GNOME desktop environment to Wayland, the development team will have to work to make the GNOME graphical user interface, called the GNOME Shell, work as a Wayland composer.

The second step will be to port the X server functionality, such as keyboard accessibility and graphical configuration capabilities. Finally, the X backend has to be replaced by Wayland's GTK + backend.

“I think we can get the gnome-shell to work as a Wayland composer in six months. That will allow us to have optional Wayland support in GNOME 3.10 and continue to use X by default, ”says Matthias.

If all goes according to plan, GNOME 3.12 could be the first free environment to be fully ported to the Wayland graphics server, in 2014.

If you want to see the work that lies ahead to finish the migration to Wayland, I suggest you see the GNOME wiki.

It's funny how hard and fast the Wayland team works now… come on, what they didn't advance in two years they will now do in six months.

It is worrying that Gnome is playing everything for everything, since I have not yet seen what gnome layers are, the reality is that the hardware I have is very good and it runs gnome without problems, however the most worrying thing is stability . If gnome does not stabilize and becomes lighter it will hardly be able to find a place on the desktop. I was surprised Debian uses it, maybe I'll give it a new try soon

Maybe Gnome does not seem stable because you have tried it in the versions that are included in Ubuntu (where it is broken with all the modifications it has made to make Unity work). On Arch Linux or Debian (which I currently use) Gnome is as stable as it has ever been, as well as being much lighter than Unity.

One of the complications that I have using Debian and Arch is that I no longer have the time to configure everything that is needed, since I am an Artist, Designer and Teacher, which has taken away the time to test the compilation of the appropriate code for me. network card and the appropriate ip.

In debian it is rare that you have to configure something, it is just install and use

and in conjunction with KDE or Gnome, it is perfect. and if you need newer software you can activate the unstable branch or Sid, which are quite stable anyway

    -----
Arch only requires a unique installation and configuration. Normally unless you come across a time when they are making a big change (like the move to Systemd), you won't need to configure anything after installation
