Gnome-Shell is finally complete in Debian Testing

Finally the transition of packages of Gnome Shell 3.2 a Debian Testing as this retrospective indicates, so the users of this distro are in luck.

As is logical, the delay has been more than justified. The team of Debian had to ensure that all components of Gnome Shell will work correctly on all platforms to which Debian offers you support. In addition, they had to correct some patches for the correct functioning of some applications, for example, that all the packages they were using libnotify1, were willing to use libnotify4.

Another of the arduous tasks was to achieve that KFreeBSD will work with Gnome Shell. The problem is that with KFreeBSD you cannot have graphical acceleration unless you are using a controller DRI1. Another problem was that NetworkManager changed from optional to necessary in gnome-shell and for some reason in BSD there would be a problem with it. That is why a developer named Biebl michael ended up preparing a patch that restores the ability to build Gnome Shell without the support of NetworkManager. Something similar happened with iceweasel 9, Ya que Mozilla included a new change in the API de Firefox that left "out of the game" KFreeBSD.

I told him a few days ago KZKG ^ Gaara when he started complaining that the packages KDE en Debian they were very old. Debian does not have its prestige in vain, it supports more architectures than Ubuntu y Archlinux and this delays the launch of many applications because they have to make sure that they work in all of them. I have just shown you a clear example of this.

The best thing about this news is that surely now many users of Debian may use Cinnamon 😀

AT LAST! That means that soon (or so I hope) will arrive at LMDE! I want you! 😀
I hope I can try Cinnamon too!

You read my mind, I was just going to ask if it would already be possible to do that. 😀

The lack of Cinnamon is one of the reasons I don't use Debian. I hope one of these days to have time to test it and see if it convinces me as a main system.

    I'm happy with Sid: ·) ...

I recommend you take the gnome 3 ppa packages from webupd8.org to be able to use the gnome-tweak and the gnome-shell theme changing extension.

What is your impression from a bird's eye view, I know it is very hasty to give a firm opinion, since it was included today, but your opinions are always very timely and valid, I am downloading the CD to install and test but as I am with speed problems on the internet, I don't know if I can install it at night.

Is there "testing" on LiveCD? Otherwise I wait for LMDE. I wish Cinnamon does not come by default but as an option. It gives me a bad feeling that they are going to place it if or if ... They would be doing the same as Ubuntu with Unity and I don't like that at all.

    1.    Courage said

There is no Debian on LiveCD but try it on Virtualbox

    2.    Manual of the Source said

It is obvious that it will come by default. It wouldn't make any sense to have gone to the trouble of developing it if in the end they are going to default to any other.

    3.    Jamin samuel said

You're right!! Cinnamon should be an "OPTION" not a decision .. Ubuntu should do the same .. offer Gnome Shell and Unity as options.

  6.   jose said

Either way…. we are one tris away from the final release of Ubuntu. At last.

Now I'm going to install it, apparently the new catalyst 12.1 driver, it works perfectly with gnome shell, I'll tell you how xd

I just updated to the new version. I have taken to looking for cinnamon in the synaptic and there it appears, but impossible to install at the moment without doing atrocities.

They seem to have problems with dependencies (stupid errors, for virtual packages that are not there yet), so I suppose we will have to wait for them to be fixed.

      aaaaaaaahhh !! ~~ I don't want to wait too long> _ <!

I don't know if one day I could get used to GNOME 3, I imagine that I have not separated from Debian Squeeze (Ubuntu 11, Linux Mint 12, Arch to be tested) for this reason in addition to the implicit ones (security, monstrous stability, it does not matter if the versions of the applications are old, it still works right?), hopefully Debian developers never abandon their policies and guidelines.

Hehe, Seriously, the best thing about Gnome-shell being fully available in Debian Testing is that you can use Cinnamon? Now you really declared yourself a menthol at heart, heh.

    Just kidding.

    A greeting.

    1.    Manual of the Source said

Well, in view of the comments, we have many menthol at heart, even among those who do not use Linux Mint. 😀

The Mint team is with the KDE version…. I hope they don't delay the LMDE update too long.

I already want to try Cinnamon, I hope this accelerates your adaptation.

Hi Christopher. are you using debian testing? Could you guide me in a question that I have please; I would like to know if debian testing comes with gnome shell by default and I would like to know if debian testing will run on this machine:

      Intel dual core 2.8Ghz
      4Gb ram
      Intel G41 graph (integrated)
      160 GB hard disk

        Yep U_U

        1.    Jamin samuel said

aha but I tried debian squeeze and it gave me a panic_kernel why? How can I be sure if installing testing will not happen to me? xq I really want gnome shell and debian not ubunttu.

I think it is not yet complete. I've been waiting for gdm3 for months:

Let's see if they hurry with gnome 3.2.

In a while, LinuxMint will be seen as Ubuntu is seen today ... ¬_¬

      1.    Jamin samuel said

        how will it be seen?

        1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

A few years ago I remember that Ubuntu was a savior, a distro based on Debian but even, by many considered better than Debian, because it was simpler when it came to installing and others.
Today, Ubuntu is seen with different eyes ... a distro… Correction, a company that thinks about income, that imposes on its users what to use and how to use it.

I think Mint in a few years will be seen in the same way, I hope I'm wrong 🙂

          1.    Jamin samuel said

Absolutely true!! .. but then we are faced with the following questions:

1 - So which Debian-based distro will we use that we are from the canonical corporation?

2 - Which distro works best with the new Gnome Shell?

            1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

I tried Gnome3 + Shell a while ago, when it came out, now I have not tried it. I used it in Arch, it worked great, elav can give you better Gnome3 + Shell references in other distros (Debian & Arch) 🙂
