Goodbye to Bluetooth?

Wi-Fi Alliance approved Wi-Fi Direct, a standard that allows connection between devices to exchange files without being connected to a network (similar to Bluetooth).

A little more than a year ago, he reported on the novelty, which was finally approved and marks a notable step in the industry.

La Wi-Fi Alliance announcement, the organization that certifies the protocols of this standard, finally approved Wi-Fi Direct, a new standard that allows connection between devices.

As is evident, the function is similar to that of Bluetooth, although with the fundamental difference that Wi-Fi Direct is cheaper to implement and that it can be found in a greater number of devices. That, without counting on the fact that it allows a higher speed when transferring data and a wider range of the signal.

The Wi-Fi specification is used for the creation of networks and not for the interconnection between devices, so a rule was rewritten thanks to the decision of the Wi-Fi Alliance to approve Wi-Fi Direct.

“You will use your Wi-Fi Direct certified devices to share all kinds of applications, content, synchronize data, socialize, play games, play audio and video and more… everything you do with your Wi-Fi devices today, just easier and without worrying about finding an internet connection ”, explained the organization.

Wi-Fi Direct certified devices can connect with any other that has any type of Wi-Fi connection, whether it belongs to the most modern or old standard.

“You only need one Wi-Fi Direct device to form a group. Now, Wi-Fi is not only accessing the internet but also connecting with all the Wi-Fi devices that your friends have, anytime, anywhere, "added Wi-Fi Alliance.

"We have designed Wi-Fi Direct to power the wide variety of applications that require connection between devices, but do not require the internet or a traditional network," said the organization's CEO, Edgar Figueroa.

“Connections between Wi-Fi Direct certified devices can be made anytime, anywhere, even if there is no access to a network. Your device is able to find others in the area to make a connection, "said a report from the Wi-Fi Alliance.

As with Bluetooth, the user must ask the other if they want to connect. "When two or more Wi-Fi Direct certified devices connect to each other, a Wi-Fi Direct Group is formed, employing the latest security standards," he added.

According to the announcement, there is already a growing number of products that will be certified with Wi-Fi Direct.
