Hosting or VPS in Latin America, the United States or Europe?

Thanks to DesdeLinux I have met (virtually) people from many countries, many of whom always have some concern or question regarding DesdeLinux, well about its operation, servers, etc. Not long ago a friend asked me to find him some hosting in his country, I thought of Hosting Uruguay, told me that services such as Hostgator who have their servers in the US or Europe, he told me: «what we do is more reliable, I prefer a Latin service before one of people who do not speak my language«, And has a point.

when we started in DesdeLinux We (elav and I) knew a lot about networks and servers, but nothing about hosting, online shopping, suppliers, etc. Throughout these 2 years we have had to learn about this, and in the process we have gone through several suppliers (story that I already told you before) some more bad than others, everything until find a suitable one and keep it.

European Hosting

Before we had a VPS with a German provider, it worked really well for us, 99% uptime, so our experience with European providers so far has been good. On the other hand, we have read several comments about the 1and1 hosting service that have not been entirely positive, I do not know this Spanish company where their data centers are located.

Latino Hosting

The first Latin hosting I heard was from IguanaHosting, which was closed by ____________________. Currently all our services are hosted on GNUTransfer servers, a company from our same Spanish-speaking community (Argentina) that has its servers in a DataCenter in the United States, we have not had any type of problem, the attention has been no less than excellent, a service quality.

I never heard good opinions about IguanaHosting, I mean technical opinions ... many times they could not bear the transfer or load, their services were frequently dropped, etc. Perhaps the problem was that their servers were physically in Latin America and not in Europe or the USA.

Server & Hosting

Hosting in the United States

Companies like the popular Hostgator and many others have their servers in DataCenters in the United States, which guarantees good bandwidth, yes, but their prices are never the cheapest (on the contrary, they are expensive) and also, it is rare It is very rare that you can get some personal, 'special' or different treatment from any other client. That is, for them you are a client like any other, you will not get preferential treatment, much less, and also ... when you cause them a problem (such as consuming many resources from their servers) they will tell you that you must pay more, increase the plan, or something that almost always translates into increasing the amount of money you have to pay them.

This was our experience with Hostgator and A2Hosting A long time ago. I am not saying that they are the worst, I am simply saying that their VPS are excessively expensive and as if that were not enough, their hosting service could not support a few thousand visits every day ... if at that time they could not support 10.000 or 15.000 visits every 24 hours, I don't know what would be done with the more than 40.000 that we currently have.

So what are the conclusions?

Hosting or VPS? : First of all, if you do not have a large capital you should ask yourself, Do I need a VPS (virtual server) or just a Hosting?

Windows or Linux? : This has to do with what type of site you plan to have (asp, php, etc). If you decide to buy a VPS this is a question you should ask yourself, Do I need a VPS with Linux or Windows?

NSA ... security? : Then, whatever you decide, you must ask yourself if you are one of those users who believe in conspiracy theories, who care about their safety and that the NSA (FBI, CIA, etc.) cannot see their data 😉. In case you are like this, I do not recommend a provider that has its servers on US soil, because you will not feel completely safe in your mind, perhaps one that has its servers in Europe or Latin America could be your solution.

English? : The other and it is important is to know if you speak English fluently or not. If you cannot communicate in English, I definitely recommend a hosting provider in our area or Spain, that is, speak Spanish. We have not had to depend on GNUTransfer technical support with our VPS because the service is impeccable, but when we were with other providers (and we had hostings and not vps) we did have to speak often (tickets, livechat, etc.) with their support technical to see problems we had, questions, etc, and EVERYTHING was in English. So, if you know English (or take the point of Google Translator) you will have no problem communicating and fighting your provider, while if you don't speak English you will suffer a bit.

I have a leg that is in Chicago, which gave me the Good Samaritan hosting service (I take care of the domain, although personally I had to migrate to GoDaddy because thanks to its coupons I can keep the domain for an annual year without having the complications from Network Solutions).

In itself, what has been taking my time is looking for a permanent job, since recently I have realized that renewing a domain in some services (such as Network Solutions) is very expensive, and in GoDaddy it gives you the ease of using coupons so that domain renewal is not so expensive.

What I have noticed is that the VPS is that GNUTransfer is worth paying for them, since they are transparent in that aspect and their service is flexible with bitcoins.

    Anyway, good post.

I use Nominalia, using their hosting in a server farm in Bergamo (Italy). It is not very cheap, but the service is very good. I have preferred Europe for its data protection laws. a greeting

I use and highly recommend http://www.host1plus.com/ whose servers are located in South Africa, Germany, Brazil and the USA. Everyone can choose the place to host their VPS.

I had my page in GoDaddy (Linux hosting) and I was doing super well (ssh ready 🙂 but since it was very basic I went to DigitalOcean and although it is more work because it is a VPS I prefer it all my life and I pay the same 🙂

GoDaddy it's perfect because their coupons really work for me, and there are even domains to renew even in local currency (thanks to this, I was able to migrate my domain from the insufferable Network Solutions to the excellent GoDaddy service).

On the hosting side, my website is hosted here.

DigitalOcean is the new shooting star in the world of hosting, if I had the chance they would be my first choice.

I have to tell you that 1and1 is a German provider, that has its servers located in different hostings throughout Europe, "synchronized", I put it in quotes, because I have been able to verify that it has them replicated, but sometimes according to which country you are You connect, you always access it and if it falls, it gives you an error instead of directing you to the replica. The worst of 1and1 the SAU (Service Attention to the User), very unprofessional, and if you have problems the most common answer is that it is your application if you do not use theirs.

I'm not conspiratorial by any means, but it simply bothers me that other countries that believe they own the world can do whatever they want with our data.

Hello, I personally recommend that you inquire about the OVH company for me and many reviews are the number 1 ISP in the world providing services both in dedicated servers, vps, and dedicated cloud… ..etc they have extortionate prices as well as they have really cheap prices compared to such atrocities that exist out there… they have data centers both in Europe and North America …… .and great and fast customer service in any language… ..I live in the USA and I have a dedicated one in North America located in Canada with proxmox installed and now I'm thinking of hiring another like it in Europe to make mirror ...

Hello, I know I am late for this discussion, but I would like to share my opinion. The truth is that I agree with your Uruguayan friend. I prefer to have a hosting from my country that has its servers located in the same country. I find that the closer the servers are, the better my website runs, let alone the language barrier. I am in Chile, and I am super happy with the Chilean hosting that I have - Hostname - which has worked perfectly since I hired it 5 years ago.

    Very good article,
I think the ideal is to look for a hosting company that is in the same country,

For example, if you are from Peru, the ideal would be for the hosting provider to be from Peru, since you will get a quick response and in Spanish, make sure that it is legally incorporated in Peru, appears in the SUNAT and has a minimum of 5 years experience. , I personally work with hosting and domain, I get good assistance, when I really need it.
