How did I get my wife to switch to Ubuntu

Like every fan, I can't help but share my joy with everyone by saying how great Linux is and trying to convince whoever is ahead to try it, and so, following the saying "everything starts at home", I decided to apply all those wonderful and persuasive arguments directly to my wife.

Unfortunately, the expectant mother of my children sent me flying when I tried to show her how well done and easy to use the Unity environment is. (That day I remembered a lot about Mark Shuttleworth's mother.) But anyway, I have always thought that it is a moral obligation to convert all our loved ones, so I decided that if I wanted to achieve my goal I would have to make a plan with a strict series of steps.

This is what I did:

Step 1:
Lead by example: First of all, the first thing I did was completely and forever abandon anything that linked me to Windows and started using Linux purely and exclusively (in this case Ubuntu). Ok, once done, the only thing left was to make him see me being happy.

Step 2:
Install everything she uses on my computer and show how well it works
: In this case, in addition to continuing with the happiness of the previous point, I made a list of all the applications that she uses (which are not really that many), I installed them in my ubuntera and then as in passing, I showed her with great joy what well they worked. Since she is a writer, she uses a lot of MS Office (change control) so the only "difficult" thing I had to install was Wine.

Step 3:
Assess your dissatisfaction with your current OS: This was the least difficult, since despite the fact that Windows 7 is one of the best things that Microsoft has done, the computer crashed a lot, it was very slow because of the stupid antivirus and it had pointless problems (such as a bug in cyclical redundancy), so more more than less I was sick of having to put up with all that. So in that sense, it was just enough to give him a little push.

Duck 4:
Leave support for Windows: Actually, I never denied him technical assistance but I did let him know how tremendously difficult it was for me to fix Windows and that next time I would have to call a technician. (Which made her furious because then she married a nerd?)

Step 5:
The final lunge: After seeing her suffer and suffer (and cry and kick) with Windows and after seeing her see me happy and content using Ubuntu, I was left with nothing more than - as in the past - to subtly suggest that she switch to Linux. So at that moment, I could taste the victory, in fact, that day I remember that it was sunny all day and that my dogs did not bark even once.

Step 6:
Install Ubuntu: Something so easy that I don't even tell them.

Conclusion:

From this, about 2 long years have passed and the truth is that my wife is very happy. Ever since he switched to Ubuntu, he hates Windows and vowed never to use it again. Unfortunately in your work you have to use MacOS, but even though it is a proprietary system, it can be said that it is acceptable. On the other hand, we know that not everything is honey on flakes, Ubuntu is not perfect (uffffffffff) and Linux in general, has a long way to go on the desktop, but we fight the battles one by one.

Very good, a few days ago I was banned from the "Let's Use Linux" community, for publishing tutorials on GTK +, however, those who publish trivialities like a desktop background do not block those.

There is no such thing as "elav and his team" if you don't know how it works DesdeLinux So you better not think that way, speaking with such a degree of ignorance should be a crime 😛

Did they ban you? … You mean you got banned from the community in G +?

However, I doubt it a LOT! that if they actually banned you, it was for publishing GTK tutorials, if you were kind enough to post links, photos, something that supports what you say would be perfect, otherwise they are just words that may or may not be true.

    3.    elav said

Well, no idea who it could be, or the reasons, but the Community of Let's Use Linux we do not moderate it at all. In fact, neither that nor any other.

Patricio, if I'm not mistaken LibreOffice Writer also has change control, you just have to save the document as a new version and with a click on the drop-down you go from one version to another, they are shown well ordered by dates.

Then if you say that your wife is a writer, tell her about the greatness of correcting and not having to worry about which word you stayed in, when you open the program again you will be in the same place where you left the pointer. That for a writer means half a life. Tell him what I've told you and you'll see how he doesn't even want to hear about Word.

Personal opinion: Excel is better than Calc to be honest, although most users do not need everything that Excel offers, but Writer gives Word forty laps if you know how it works well. Create a macro, format a movie script ... if you are a writer the last thing you need is Word, Writer is your word processor. So you can even uninstall the virtual machine and the happy Word without problems. My wife and I write every day and we haven't played Word in five years. We have missed absolutely nothing. If you don't know how the Versions thing works (which is similar to the change control), let us know.

Hello! Thank you very much for your comment! I tried to tell him how super good Libre Office is and he sent me flying. So I decided to be content with the move to Ubuntu, which I think is a good win.

My whole family uses Linux! I am proud that my children (7,9 and 10) have never used Windows and they handle Linux for everything. I find it difficult that at school they do not challenge them for not using Windows, since the technology teachers get angry every time they give them a task to do in Word and my daughter does it with free tools ... well ... one day they will understand the important thing to train the boys not to use pirated copies ...

So in these not very complex environments it is more than possible to pass without so much drama.

At home I did the same, but using Mint. So the environment was not a problem. Also, my wife does not depend on any particular application or function. Good article, although I differ a bit, I do not force anyone to change, I have been a linux user for years although I have always had to use different systems day by day out of necessity and I have tried to get people to leave windows but only those who have certain computer knowledge given Because the user out of this world finds the system of managing linux tedious, the use of the terminal discourages many people, although it is easy for us to understand how it works for the average user, the truth is that they are lazy. Personally, linux in various distributions and if they like it, that's good, and if not, most people don't care if it's free or not, since they will never touch the code and they care little if it's legal or not to share it in the end most will share the programs whether it is "original", "pirate" or free

I have had to keep a notebook with Windows 7, much to my regret. At home there are two others that are using Linux Mint, but I have not found an application to replace Rocket MP3, which I use relatively frequently and have not yet been able to replace. Everything else has already been replaced.

By the way, I installed Wine and it doesn't work well for me ... It hangs.

Rocket MP3? is the program to download from youtube? If that is so, you have not one but several in GNU / Linux, for example the one that I use YouTube DL GUI, download the videos in the quality you want and also the audios in the quality you want or both and not only from YouTube.
      If I'm wrong, correct me.

You use youtube dlp and that's it. The syntax is very easy to learn and you only need to run 3 commands to install it:
        sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
        sudo apt-get install python3
        sudo pip install --trusted-host pypi.org yt-dlp
On Windows, download the release from github and install by hand the dependencies that the program asks for.
        yt-dlp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCdA4bJAGGk -x --audio-format opus --no-keep-video
This is how you download a great song.

If you use Firefox on Linux you can add this add-on to it:
      http://www.youtube-mp3.org/

You download the audio of the YouTube videos, you can even use youtube-dl and with the option -x etc ... and you only download the audio

You can also use SoundConverter in Linux and you only extract the audio from the downloaded videos with youtube-dl or with other programs, you can even use Audacity and extract the audio ...

      Cheers !!!

    3.    Edwardin said

Friend, the best option is youtube-dl, there is a graphical interface as mentioned above, you will have to look for it if you do not want to use the console, which is more immediate I think. My wife has been using Linux (PcLinuxOs) for more than 10 years, at first it did bother her a bit but now, she doesn't use Windows at all. During that time she has never had a problem with viruses or anything else that causes problems. Both she and I are very happy with Linux.

Windows doesn't need antivirus, just smart users. And Linux needs geeks, which is even more difficult to become.

      Thanks cunt

I am an advanced user, a geek would consider myself and I study computer engineering but honestly I still do not see the chicha to Linux

I have 2 Windows PCs and one with Guadalinex, and this summer I am going to fix some PCs and I will leave one of the systems that they have (WinXP, I don't care that it is obsolete, the most I am going to do is play at age with him) and to another I want to put something light Linux (recommendations please ^^)

What I do not see as normal for Linux users is that you want everyone to switch to Linux, if you like it then better for you, I use Linux (as I said) and I do not dislike it, but I find some actions not very intuitive.

As the one above said, with intelligent users, you don't need antivirus in Windows (I have Panda Free, which consumes less than Openoffice and because I share the PC), you only need intelligent users, and in Linux geeks

And if everyone went to Linux it would end up as rotten with Malware as this Windows, but look at Android that uses Linux kernel

      Greetings ~

I liked the note. I have been installing Linux for a few years with friends and relatives who had me as their private technician (free of course). One day I got tired of fixing their windows and I went on a sit-down strike and quit collaboration. The only solution that I offer you is to rescue the valuable information, format, install a Linux distribution and a brief tour of the applications that you are going to use according to your user profile. 90% are very happy with their new OS.

Hahahaha, what a good anecdote. How many of us have gone through a similar situation?

  34.   Vladimir Paulino said

    About this I can say.

I was also strongly convinced of the need to "evangelize" others to bring them to use Linux.
I have determined, however, that the best use people I know ** can make of GNU-Linux is to surf the web. In that, Windows does not exceed Linux-Desktop, due to the security that Linux offers.
My friends who have offices, some of me got them to install Linux, and they had to go back to Windows for two things: a-The multitude of devices they had connected to their work computers were not all compatible with Linux; b. Some of the computers that were compatible with Linux had lower quality drivers available than the ones that come for Windows, and the experience using them on a Linux system, therefore, was inferior-more complicated-lower quality.

4.Free Office, for those who use Ms Word intensively, it seems very inferior to the Windows solution. They showed me errors and bugs in Libre Office that I couldn't deny. The huge advantage that Libre Office had so many features and was free did not seem to compensate them.

In conclusion, I must clarify that my friends who installed Linux were really excited about this system. In the first days of using it his desire to stay on the platform grew, or so I thought I noticed. The connectivity problems with peripherals, bugs in some key programs for productivity and the inability to work with certain devices ended up driving them away from Linux.

After that experience, I still strongly recommend Linux BUT specifically to people whose computing life revolves around viewing an email, entering their social networks, surfing the Internet, searching something on Google, downloading movies and things like that. Myself, I have switched to using Windows on a partition. I bought the license to use it legally. I use Windows 8.1. Today I have a computer with many peripherals, it is a whole workstation. I handle document printing, scanners and everything else with much better performance and added flaws in Windows than in Linux. And I practice what I preach, for productivity and compatibility, as well as for the use of apps in the Windows environment, I use Windows. For my extended web life, when it comes to distraction, information, recreation, socialization, multimedia consumption, I use Linux.

That is the reality for me. For the desktop (productive in offices), due to the problems outlined above, Linux is not completely Ready. When a friend who studies advertising or architecture, or who is a DJ, can use the professional applications with which they learned their art in Linux; When the hardware drivers for Linux are super abundant and quality equivalent to Windows, then I will recommend Linux-Desktop to my friends who have various productive and crucial activities, in the meantime, I only recommend it as the strongest system to navigate in the web, which is completely ready for that. And that's what I use it for.

    1.    indianlinux said

Too bad that it only serves to surf the web for you. I am a civil engineer and I use Linux for everything. I have many peripherals connected to the workstation, even a Plotter works perfectly for me. As a curiosity, I comment that my Plotter behaves better on my Linux than on a Windows station: plans and photographs are plotted faster and with more fidelity to the color they show on the screen! _as it is seen in my monitor linux like this is printed, which in windows is distorted.
Of the LibreOffice office suite that I tell you that those who use it do not know: Writer, for me it has an advantage over Word: My documents are technical and made with the ISO standard, they are not college letters. Calc works for me for budgets, Excel? it's not superior at all, not even its macros. I have old Excel spreadsheets with macros ... of course, macros in vbasic are proper to excel ... in Calc, if I simply want a macro, I even program it in python, a language that excel does not support ...
I do not accept that macros are an advantage in excel because whoever wants to can program very complex macros in Calc and that does not detract from its competitor ...
AutoCAD? I still use it in a virtual machine.
I stopped wasting time performing maintenance on my pc, I forgot about viruses, antivirus, malware, spyware, firewalls, etc etc ... I turn on my workstation and produce ... do I need ACAD or other software exclusively for windows? .. in 5 seconds the virtual machine is ready….

In conclusion, for me, I am a professional and I need a productive environment on my computer, Linux is perfect for me
