How to associate magnet links in Firefox

A few days ago the news was released: The Pirate Bay will say goodbye to .torrent files and instead provide the so-called magnet linksWhat does this imply? Basically, the searches will not be centralized by a tracker, as before, but it will be totally decentralized. All the managers download p2p they are already Compatible with this technology, the problem is that Firefox he still did not realize it. Let's see why.

What are Magnet links

Magnet is a draft open standard that defines a URI scheme for magnet links. These are mainly used to link to content available for download on peer-to-peer networks. These types of links typically identify files uniquely through a cryptographic hash, not by name or location.

Since it references a file based on its content or metadata, rather than its location, a magnet link can be considered a type of Uniform Resource Name (URN), rather than Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Although it can be used for other applications, it is particularly useful in the peer-to-peer context, because it allows resources to be linked without having a server permanently available.

Magnet links look like this:

magnet:? xt = urn: sha1: 53KGBXVVGGWGOJZW5L34EUGEVVGFT77H & dn = Tito Rojas - Yesterday they told me.mp3

Now, if you click on the previous link, there is a high probability that your browser will complain: the protocol of the connection is invalid "or" no application is associated with this protocol ".

The solution?

Steps to follow

1.- I opened Firefox and typed about: config in the address bar

2.- Yes, I promise to be careful.

3.- Right click and select the option: New> Yes / No.

4.- Name: network.protocol-handler.expose.magnet

5.- Value: False

Choosing False we make sure that Firefox asks us with which program we want to open requests for this protocol.

Ready. You don't need to restart Firefox to notice the changes.

As an additional tip, if you don't know the specific path of your p2p client, I suggest you start by looking for it in / usr / bin.

Hi Pablo for so long !!!, I'm at work (ahem ..) here I use firefox 10 (beta) and when I click on the link it asks me if I want to open it with Utorrent. I say yes and obviously it does not open it but the little fox does not scream, obviously this version has already solved it, or it will be because I am using the crazy window (here I have no other).
When I get home I test it on Debian.

Logical would be the translation. Although the truth seems terrible to me. It should be Boolean.

Nope ... it is an invention ... it serves nothing more than to give an example.
To see if the magnet links issue works well, I suggest you take a look at thepiratebay and try to download something from there. Cheers! Paul.

Do you know how to download them with opera?
    or with wget?

  17.   Let's use Linux said

Hello Cajuma! That must be because the link I included in the post is non-existent ...
Try opening a magnet link that you find on pages like The Pirate Bay.
I think I'm going to change the link that I put in the post because there were already several that got confused with that ... my mistake.
    hug! Paul.

In which version? Because in Firefox 6 it only allows me to create strings, integers and logics, I don't know if boolean corresponds to any

  19.   sieg84 said

With Opera you must add the protocol in options - advanced - programs, add and in "protocol" write magnet and in "open with another application" the location of the program.

it's fine but in step 3 where do we have to right click with the mouse? esque I don't understand ... could you be more specific?

    Thank you.

    1.    let's use linux said

That's it ... after following steps 1 and 2, right click on a blank space to create a new property.
If not, look on YouTube: add property about: config in Firefox and you will surely see an example.
      Hug! Paul.

Well, it doesn't work for me, it totally happens to me and the magnets

    I use debian 7 and firefox 19

    1.    let's use linux said

In my opinion you should keep trying ... magnet links are better than torrent files as they make tracking a bit more difficult ... what error does it throw at you?

What is that of: New> Boolean Boolean?

    1.    let's use linux said

I think the translation is "logical." I have already modified the article. There were several who had the same problem in finding the option. 🙂
      Cheers! Paul.

Those of you who have a more modern version of firefox will see that the option to create new -> logical no longer appears, now you must select new -> yes / no. If you have put another option that is not, right click and select reset, after that restart the browser and it will have been deleted. Now you can add it again by selecting yes / no.

  39.   Dani said

Thank you very much, I was quite uncomfortable with this problem and there were websites like piratebay that were of no use to me, when the largest number of files are there and much earlier than on other sites.

Very useful and very well explained.

    Hola!
First of all, thank you very much for this contribution, I am quite new to Linux but I have some programming knowledge and the truth is that I do not know very well how to proceed.

Let me explain, after doing the steps you said, the window to choose a program appears, but I cannot find Transmission (since I am not able to put it on the desktop) anywhere (and yes, I have it installed because I even opened it ). How can I indicate that I want to open it with Transmission?

Thank you very much in advance 🙂

    1.    let's use linux said

      Hi Gon!
Look, you can find the Transmission executable (as well as most executables for the programs you install) in / usr / bin /. It's called gtk-transmission.
      Hug! Paul.

    Hello team!
I'm new to Ubuntu and not very good at computers, let's see if you can give me a hand with my question since I'm going crazy trying to solve it. I only have the Qbittorrent, and when I download from Elmejortorrent.com I choose it as the default, but I try to download from Thepiratebays.se and I get a window (called launch application) in which it says «This link must be opened with an application send a: Choose an application. When I give it to choose it gives me options but in none of the Qbittorrent appears. It only puts places, Search (I tried to search and nothing), recently used (only downloads made from elmejortorrent appear, but not the QB application), Systems, Documents, desktop, music, etc (the application appears in none)
What can I do to make the application appear?
If someone could help me I would be very grateful

    1.    David said

I have reelected and I have not made it clear that when I download from the best torrent I have no problem, and that the problem is that when I want to download from thepiratebay, I do not choose the qbittorrent and when I try to choose it, I do not get one of the options. I'm sorry for my bad description and thanks for your attention

  42.   corocotta said

Another very simple option is to right click (mouse) on the link (magnet link), and choose «copy the link path», and then in transmission, in «file» choose «open URL»
