How to replace that gap that Last.fm left in our lives

Last.fm It is a social network, an Internet radio and also a music recommendation system that builds profiles and statistics on musical tastes, based on the data sent by registered users. Some of these services are paid, but there are still countries where it is still free. share your musical tastes with the rest of the world or listen to music online (without having to download the entire albums and without getting bored always listening to the same albums and artists), surely you were a fan of Last.fm. Unfortunately, it's been a while since they started charging for everything. I figured out how to replace it!

Online radio

Admittedly, the idea is great: you go to last.fm, enter the name of an artist and based on an algorithm and user statistics and recommendations, start playing music by that artist and "similar" artists. Of course, afterwards everything went wrong and now almost no one can enjoy the service.

However, not to cry friends! Fortunately, there is Grooveshark. I recommend you try this excellent replacement for Last.fm. They will be able to listen to music online of excellent quality. Plus, they have an amazing artist library. Works great with Chromium, Firefox and other Linux internet browsers.

I want to listen to indie artists!

This is PAVADA on Linux. Always in Rhythmbox, which is the "official" Ubuntu player, go to Edit> Plugins> Jamendo. Then they will find the Jamendo option in the left sidebar. They click there and wait for it to load the database with all the independent artists. Another of its interesting features is that all songs are in OGG format.

The number of people out there with talent and creativity is incredible. How different the world would be if we could empower that instead of repressing it. Anyway ... I recommend reading more about how Jamendo works at his Wikipedia page. They can also try magnatune, its installation and configuration is very similar.

This is one more demonstration that Linux not only opens the source code and our minds (by making us reflect on the world we want to build) but also our ears.

audioscrobbler

It is a small plugin for the music player that serves to connect to a database in which they store your musical habits and those of other users and thus recommendations can be generated based on that information. You can find other users who share your tastes and listen to the music they listen to, thus being more likely to find new groups and artists that match your musical preferences.

The perfect replacement for this is free.fm. All there is to do is subscribe and follow the installation or setup instructions for each music player.

In the case of Rhythmbox, which is the default in Ubuntu:

Open a terminal and type:

gconftool-2 --type string --set / apps / rhythmbox / audioscrobbler / scrobbler_url "http://turtle.libre.fm"

Then open Rhythmbox and go to Edit> Plugins. Enable the Last.fm option. Finally, press the button «Configure» and enter your registration data in Libre.fm.

If when you go to the Last.fm option in the left sidebar of Rhythmbox you get an error message, don't worry.

They have everything ready to use Libre.fm. They can see their favorite artists and songs by accessing your profile page. That list will be updated as songs are played with Rhythmbox.
