How to select the best server to update our system

By default, Ubuntu and all the distros that use Synaptic as Package Manager (Debian, Mint, etc.), assume that the best server to obtain the repositories are those of our own country. In principle, this is a correct decision. It happens that sometimes other servers can go much faster and be less congested than those in our country.

rodolfo vargas, a blog reader, shared with us an interesting query: What are the best repos? Well, the truth is that they don't exist. When it comes to content, they all have exactly the same thing. The only really important difference may come from the download speed side. That, as we saw, depends on many factors: the place where the server is located, the place where your computer is located, the network congestion, the server congestion, if that server is undergoing repairs, etc.

The easiest way to find out which is the fastest server in your particular case is the following:

Go to System> Administration> Software Sources. Click on the list where it says Download from and select Other. There you will be able to select the server that you like. Sure, here you will also be able Select the best server, by clicking on the corresponding button.

I encourage you to send your doubts, queries, suggestions and questions just like our friend Rodolfo did. On the one hand, it will be the most useful for you and, in addition, it will help me to know what topics to include in future blog posts. 🙂

Hello: The problem is knowing a priori which server is the fastest.
Through the AIRULUS utility there is the possibility of previously checking the response time of all (or almost) the available repository servers, being able to select the one that best serves us at that time and verify it periodically. I am using it and it works perfectly. Regards.

Hello Rodolfo! Regarding swapping the Debian and Ubuntu repositories, although it is possible, I suggest you do not do it as it can lead to a very unstable system. In case, despite the warning, you prefer to continue, I leave you a wiki in which they explain how to do it step by step: http://bibliaubuntu.a.wiki-site.com/index.php/M...

Hello Luis! Look, you can try Ailurus. Ailurus is a program similar to Ubuntu Tweak, which helps you tune and optimize your Ubuntu.

However, I believe that what Ailurus does is exactly the same as what you are doing now. For that reason, I would tell you the following:

    1) Do you have VLC installed through PPA? If so, it is not the Ubuntu servers that are slow but the server where that PPA is located. I am telling you so that you keep it in mind. In that case, the search procedure for the best servers is perfect, what happens is that it only chooses the best servers for the Ubuntu repositories, not the PPAs.

    2) It may also be that a server is undergoing repairs. I, for example, was using some from Wikimedia and I had to switch back to those from my country because they were super slow in recent days.

I hope I have been of some help.

    A big hug! Paul.

Hi Pablo, notice that I use ubuntu on my desktop and lubuntu on my netbook, I always do what you explain, but for a few months now I select the best server, but the server that you select is very slow and when I start downloading new programs (for example vlc) the download is frozen and does not continue. I have to do this procedure that you described about 3 times again and thus I find the best server and the truth is it is exasperating to install packages or programs when the download is always paralyzed. What do you think about it?

I do not know what they say about AILURUS, so I will have to test it to see if it improves the download of programs and updates.

very interesting article, thank you. I have two doubts: is there a possibility that the local repository (if I work by console) does not work correctly? for a server that does not have graphics? slds !!
