How to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10 from Ubuntu 12.04

Ubuntu 12.10 is now available for download. However, since Ubuntu 12.04, the version prior to the current one, was a version of long term (which means it is compatible with bug fixes and security updates for 5 years) no pop-up will appear telling you that there is a new one version available. So what to do if you want to update, without installing everything from scratch?

How to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10

1.- I opened the Update Manager from Dash.

2.- Click on the "Settings" button in the lower left corner of the Update Manager window. This will open the Software Sources window.

3.- Click on the menu next to "Notify me of a new version of Ubuntu" and select "for any new version."

It is important that nothing other than what is described above is disabled or changed.

4.- Once you have made the change it will probably ask you to enter your user password. After this, it will close the Software Sources window and reopen the Update Manager.

The following message will appear at the top of the window:

5.- Click on the 'Update' button to begin the update to Ubuntu 12.10.

As a footnote, it should be remembered Ubuntu 12.04, since it is an LTS version, it is expected that it will be more stable. Lastly, don't forget that any additional "PPAs" you have added to your system will be disabled during the update.

All software or distro needs to be polished once they come to light either with the alpha and beta versions or once it is officially published, so we find out about the myriad of bugs that it may have and therefore correct them.

Ubuntu has a specific problem: versionitis, although it is more a problem for users than for Canonical. Of course I will not defend the indefensible, Ubuntu 12.10 is full of errors. From the alpha you could see the problem that when updating from precise unity it would crack. With clean installation unity has no problems ... unless you want to activate the shortcuts with the mouse or add compiz effects (which do not come by default), although to be fair what casca is compiz: py this has not been fixed by more reports error sent by beta testers: s

I am a romantic and I do not stop using buntu because of the facilities it gives me with my hardware. But yes, I only use the LTS because let's be honest all the versions between LTS are alphas (except for those little wonder called Karmic Koala). Many like unity, I pass it olympically, I think it brings more problems than solutions, hence I still use lucid at work and at home xubuntu and opensuse with xfce. I think that LTS is the only option you have if you want an experience with Ubuntu without so much headache.

If you want to use this version, I ask you to be patient, wait for the bugs to be fixed and in a month + or - you will have a more stable system or stay in the LTS that at least with xfce and lxde goes great (just as well than Opensuse 12.2 + Kde which is already saying something). But I can't avoid saying that installing a version of Ubuntu other than LTS is more eager to learn than to enjoy stability 😉

    Hi, I can't upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10.
    I follow the steps indicated:
    1.- update manager start
2.- I click on the 'Update' button to start the update to Ubuntu 12.10.
3.- A window opens with information on the release notes and I click on «update»
4.- A window appears informing of the download of the update tool. The window disappears after 2 seconds.

And then nothing else, the update wizard does not start, and nothing happens.

Please, I need help if possible. Thank you.
