Install Minecraft from PPA

Minecraft is a multiplatform game in which we create all kinds of 3D constructions from cubes. Along with buildings, this game includes elements of exploration, gathering, "crafting" and combat.

To install it in Ubuntu and its derivatives, we have an unofficial script available in PPA. It downloads and installs Minecraft and OpenJDK7. It also features an icon created by Cassidy James that fits in perfectly with the elementary theme, and for Unity it includes "quicklists" for the screenshots and texture pack folders, as well as a link to the game's wiki.

Install Minecraft from the Unofficial Installer

The script available in the PPA connects to Mojang's servers and downloads the files from there, so there are no current Minecraft files in this PPA. Before continuing, it is advisable to read the description of the PPA that we quote below:

If your PC is having trouble running Minecraft under OpenJDK7, it will have trouble running this version. I've tested it on multiple machines and it worked fine, but it might not be your case. That said, one of the "black screen" problems I've seen has been in cases where OpenJDK7 was not being used.

To add the PPA and install Minecraft, we will use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: minecraft-installer-peeps / minecraft-installer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install minecraft-installer

Once installed, we will run Minecraft from the menu or Dash of our distro. Alternatively, the installer can be downloaded from DeviantArt.

If you find any bugs, do not hesitate to report them in Launchpad.

Interesting, I did not know this way to install it. I think I'm going to get a little more addicted to this.

    Greetings.

Thanks for sharing. The code in the third line should be, in order to install it,
sudo apt-get install minecraft-installer »; Another thing about the game, this launcher is official which means that you can only play Minecraft if you have purchased the game.
