Interesting changes are coming in Xfce 4.10, let's see some

A couple of days ago on the list Xfce announced that some applications were available that are only the preamble of what we will have in Xfce 4.10.

After waiting to see if in Archlinux they included (which they haven't done), I ended up compiling and installing some packages manually which is why I am writing this article. Little by little I will download the packages that have been released and I will install them manually, but let's get back to what we are dealing with. He App Finder (Application Finder) For example, it has received very relevant improvements, although it is not yet at the height of launchers such as docky o Locker. Let's see some of them.

From the outset this application replaces the obsolete one xfrun, so when we press [Alt] + [F2], App Finder It will take care of the task of launching applications and it's amazing how fast it does it.

We can type the name of the application, or simply search for it according to its category by displaying the window with the arrow that appears on the right side:

This makes Xfce un Desktop Environment much more accessible and usable. We can access applications extremely quickly (suffers Dash).

In the case of Panel, which was the second application I installed, we can find some changes in its items (applets). For example now we can use a menu of Session as in Ubuntu o gnome-shell.

But we can also configure it to show only what we need, or we can choose a list of buttons instead of a menu.

There are many more changes and bug fixes, but I am discovering them little by little. What I do see is that without a doubt Xfce It is evolving without losing the simplicity that characterizes it and I like that a lot.

It looks very, very good. I use the application browser on a daily basis, but if they combined it with xfrun and improved it, it will be much more productive, great.

Well, I hadn't used [Alt] + [F2] as much as I do now and installing it is very easy 😀

The session applet already exists in 4.8. The new thing is to be able to choose the things that go or not there. But it already exists. I have 4.8 and I'm seeing it right now 🙂

What are you looking forward to, I can't wait to be enjoying Xfce 4.10. I left Linux Mint 12 because, although functional and beautiful, applications take time to open, notifications are cluttered, and I don't understand why when I open a new window it doesn't immediately show up in the open windows bar. Now I am with Xubuntu, a distribution that is no longer what I knew with version 9.10. I am very comfortable and I hope that the next version already comes with Xfce 4.10. I don't ask Thunar for tabs, I would just like the split panel function in two like Nautilus's F3 function does. It's the only thing I miss. Implementing it would not detract from Thunar (and desktop), as the tabs function would. Anyway, I like Xfce more and more and I hope to enjoy the new version in March. If I knew programming and all that, I would get into the project to help improve it.

We are the same. I went back to Xubuntu because I hate Unity (my PC is not a Tablet). I tried mint and although pretty it was too slow for my liking. But it's true! Xubuntu is doing great now. And just like you I am waiting for xfce 4.10
I do ask Thunar for the damned tabs. Although I could continue using Nautilus it seems to me that it would reduce the excellent performance that I have now. We will see if in the end they realize that the tabs are necessary and incorporate them.
