Is it final? It is real? Did Steam finally come to Linux?

This was the crash of the morning, the boom, this is what runs through several accounts of Twitter y G+, the first jewel of the day And what a jewel!

I imagine we are tired, and I say we are because I include myself, from reading about «Steam for Linux»For a while now, good, but long. We never had any official pronouncement or anyone of weight who gave the news, they were always rumors or echoes that «Valve is looking for Linux software developers and engineersAnd truth be told, that already had me disgusted.

Well, now things get very interesting and they make me doubt if it is true or they are trolling me, but now it is not a leak and media of true weight and credibility are, not talking, but confirming that it is true, that there will be Steam for Linux and that in fact is already in development.

Let's see the thing has weight because nothing more and nothing less than Michael Larabel, The founder of Phoronix tweeted from his personal account that the co-founder of Valve has given you a compilation of Steam for Linux and that yesterday he traveled to the headquarters of Valve in Washington for a personal meeting about it. In simpler words, it is not a game to talk about this gaming platform.

If it weren't because Michael's account is full of messages about Steam en Linux and that he himself tweets that he is preparing an article, screenshots, testing and testing the platform, the thing would be impossible to believe, but it is not like that, what the founder of Phoronix says gives it a weight HUGE to the matter since if it is technology information and it comes from Phoronix, you have to take it into account, like TechCrunch or with the hardware Tom's Hardware.

The issue here is not what the weight of the claims of Michael Larabel who would not put his skin on fire in such a way just to troll, much less when reputations of such magnitude as that of Valve are at stake, but the implications it brings Steam for the Jugones and for Linux.

The thing is, having such a platform in Linux there is a huge hook to attract new users, to show that Linux can be played and that little by little their excuses for being on Windows begin to fall short, very very short.

Another beneficial implication for Linux it will be that now they will face each other Desura and Steam, in an all-out war on both platforms, Linux y Windows, forcing to Desura to grow rapidly and improve or to die, which again benefits us since it is already free and very competent, now having competition in all the platforms in which it is present surely improves the quality of the service and the software.

So this means that yes, that is true, that really Linux it grows, quite the opposite of the statistics, because otherwise nothing would be invested in projects like this. I'm still a bit doubtful, I have to admit it but so much emphasis that Michael makes on his twitter account is not to be overlooked, let's see how this whole thing grows and let's wait for tomorrow or a couple of days the announcement and tests of Phoronix.

I leave you screenshots of Michael's tweets:

Tweets from Michael Larabel

I recommend that if you are interested in the subject, read the sources:

Phoronix: I owe it to him, there are already articles about it but they are down, apparently they have too many visits.

It is assumed that it has already been announced and that Phoronix is testing the binaries that valve provided.

When they announce it on their official page, with a departure date and showing customer details.

It seems to me that this time he is serious. I hope they carry all the games, even if they start small ... dreaming costs nothing.

What really matters is the background of the matter, which implies that Steam is coming to Linux, not just games.

Tomorrow I'll be writing about it.

In the archlinux AUR is a steam alpha package

    No idea.

The truth is that I don't play anything. And if I play it is Sudoku. But if games bring better drivers and attract more people to Linux, I hope that happens 🙂

It has all the earmarks of being the first version they released in 2010.

    Don't forget Desura… D =

    1.    pandev92 said

The important thing is not the distributors but the games that follow, desura does not have that potential that steam can have, that of motivating a company to create games but hey, if it is like steam on mac, they will release a good game every two years xD .-.-.-
