JDownloader2: An excellent Download Manager for Linux

Download managers are programs that accelerate the speed with which files are downloaded from the Internet. Most of them can also perform other tasks such as managing the waiting list of files to download, pausing or continuing an interrupted download, performing multiple downloads simultaneously, or scheduling a download. And of this class of programs there are many mono-platform and multiplatform.

For us GNU / Linux users there is a good Multiplatform Download Manager that meets our requirements, and this program is none other than JDownloader, which is currently going for its version 2.

Introduction to JDownloader2

According to his own website is

JDownloader2 (JD2) is an open source platform written entirely in Java. This makes it easy to download files from servers like Rapidshare.com or Mega.nz, not only for Premium account users but also for free accounts. JD offers multiple parallel downloads, captcha recognition, automatic file extraction and much more. Of course, JD is free. Additionally, it supports many “link encryption” sites, so you just have to paste the “encrypted” links and JD will do the rest. JD can import CCF, RSDF files and the new DLC files.

Plus JDownloader2 for being open source has the support of a huge community that participates in its development, making it an excellent program that makes downloads very fast and easy. Its users can start, stop or temporarily suspend downloads, configure bandwidth limitations and archive files automatically, and enjoy many other more facilities and benefits.

Actually, JDownloader2 constitutes software that provides a programming framework, easily expandable and improvable, saving precious man hours for other similar developments.

JDownloader on Linux

As we already reviewed above, this JD2 is written in Java, therefore, you must have it installed previously. You can install Java as usual or install it by taking as a guide this previous article on our own Blog, called: Install Oracle Java 10: Via Terminal from GNU / Linux.

Download

Once Java is installed, you can install the JD2 in 2 ways. One is by downloading the package in .sh format for 32 Bit platforms (JD2Setup_x86 .sh) or 64 Bits (JD2Setup_x64 .sh) or in Java executable format (JDownloader .jar).

Run

You can then run and install the same using either of the 2 file formats. For * .sh Binaries you just have to run the following command line:

sudo sh Descargas/JD*.sh

Note: If you run the .sh package, it already contains the completely downloaded package and only the minimum available updates will be downloaded.

For the * .jar executable, you can graphically run the file by opening it with the previously installed Java jar-loader application or by executing the following command command:

sudo java -jar Descargas/JDownloader.jar

Note: If you run the .jar package, it will proceed to download the completely updated package as far as it is available on your official server.

From here you can run your JD2 on Linux as usual or if you have not used it before you can find a good tutorial on its use and advanced configuration.

However, if you want you can take a look at the settings section found in the menu bar, and then in options, where the following window will open:

I hope this publication from me is useful as usual, and that you enjoy JD2.

From what I see, the latest version corresponds to the year 2016, or am I wrong?

According to the official website, the date of the last update is: 2016/06/27. However, the support, corrections and pluging remain strongly active, as you can see in their forum in Spanish: https://board.jdownloader.org/forumdisplay.php?f=26

What advantages does JDownloader (graphical interface) have over wget (run in console)?
I wish you could talk about the intermediate and advanced use of wget

I would like to install it on a rampsberry Pi. I currently use it to host my blog (http://descargarelsongr.com) but I don't know if it's possible to run jdownloader 2 simultaneously. On the other hand, the rabspi is not very powerful either. Would you recommend it

Well I saw several articles about it and if I saw that it is feasible, look at this: https://www.tekcrispy.com/2016/10/03/instalar-jdownloader-en-la-raspberry-pi/

Jdownloader rips almost any online multimedia content. The best for porn videos, the problem is that it consumes a lot of resources (java sucks)

🙂 Thanks for that input! Especially «porn» leave the most important thing out!

    I have a problem.

I installed the JD2, ok. The case is that now I want to uninstall it, I go to the containing folder and there is a file named "Uninstall JDownloader", it has no extension and it says "Unknown file". I use Lubuntu.
