KDE 4.8 available!

The KDE developers have announced the availability of the final version of KDE 4.8, a new edition of this desktop environment that will surely delight your fans, at difference of what has been happening, unfortunately, with Unity.

The changes are many and very relevant, and you can analyze them in detail in the extensive information they have published on KDE.org:

New arrivals

KDE Plasma Workspaces 4.8- Includes Kwin optimizations, power management redesign, and integration with activities. The first plasma-based QtQuick widgets have entered the default Plasma desktop installation.

KDE Applications 4.8: Dolphin, the KDE file explorer, substantially improves its display engine; Kate receives new features and improvements, Gwenview comes with functional and visual improvements. Telepathy KDE reaches its first beta. New Marble features keep coming, including: elevation profile, satellite tracking, and KRunner integration.

KDE Platform 4.8: KDE is more stable than ever. In addition to stability improvements and bug fixes, this version 4.8 offers better tools for building very fluent touch user interfaces, integrates with the mechanisms of other password saving systems, and lays the foundation for stronger interaction with other people using the new KDE Telepathy framework.

I really liked the change from Dolhpin with a new engine to display files.

I really dislike unity, I really don't like ubuntu, its misrepresentation of its own philosophy and the damage it is doing to free software in general by making itself look like "Ubuntu> GNU / Linux", but the truth is that I don't see any point in comparing unity with KDE. KDE is a complete and legendary desktop environment, unity is hardly a Gnome shell that takes almost no time.

I am a happy user of Unity and Gnome-Shell ... And in general, I see more and more users happy with Unity, so the statement, it seems to me at best, hasty 😉

I feel quite comfortable with Unity, it is the one that least "bothers" me when it works well for my way of working, the one that least gets in the way of my work flow. Although I have it with a configuration with a dock, which is the most I use whatever the desktop.
Anyway, every couple of months I usually test other desktops for a week, configuring them to my liking and exploring their possibilities. KDE is great desktop, and the Gnome Shell (plus various extensions) is getting interesting. But for now, Unity (plus several changes) is what I prefer, but the best thing is that there are so many good options to choose from.
It seems to me a success that they improve Dolphin, I think it was the weakest point in my last attempt with KDE. The rest, after a lot of configuration (which is appreciated by the amount of configurations that KDE provides, well above the rest), was quite close to what I was looking for.

Hello: I have been a Unity user since it came out and it has improved in this time, it works perfectly for me, it is simple and reliable.

Kde I like but it is more confusing, at least for me.

It's possible. However, there are many who have complaints about Unity.

Beyond that, I think that Unity, the Ubuntu font, Ubuntu TV, even the new HUD make sense when viewed from this perspective: Mark Shuttleworth wants Ubuntu to be something different. For this reason, he has insisted on incorporating different things ... to make it different. That's what made Apple successful, in part. The other part has to do with keeping things simple. Supposedly, Ubuntu comes from that philosophy, since its motto is to be "Linux for human beings". However, some of these changes only complicate everyday work and make the transition more difficult for those coming from Windows.

    Cheers! Paul.

well, even if you're right in some respects, I don't think the ubuntu people want to see themselves as "Ubuntu> GNU / Linux" since they, like fedora, try to support free software, so I don't see a "harm" Of course you are not going to compare KDE with unity since there is a big difference, and I don't think they are misrepresenting their own philosophy since I have not noticed any change in their purposes to the end user, the only thing they have done is cause "controversy" when it comes to graphical interfaces and that I don't think is considered a misrepresentation.

    Greetings ^ _ ^

mmm ... from your perspective, it changes a lot the way you see the intentions of ubuntu, although of course for me they are good ideas since it makes there is variety in the Linux world.

PS: I really like your perspective and the way you see Linux (objectivity) in general.
    Cheers(:

Yes! yes! It's the same thing that I said since the Unity and Gnome-Shell revolution began ... I use Ubuntu every day, and I love it! The traditional interfaces seemed very "win2s" to me (task bar down, start button, etc .. loading that from win95 !! it already RE depressed me, linux is now looking for its own image, "don't choose me because I look like .. choose me because I'm prettier, better and free !! ») Until Mark came up with this. I totally agree with all these news! And I hope for more !!

Unity, I love it! I've been doing an experiment for a few months. It is only in June that this "experiment" has been started for a year. My father, 51 years old, uses unity because he already has everything he needs in the launcher, and the unity bash takes him anywhere he wants, as well as brazier he records the cds in two steps. He himself tells me, "It's easy!" My old woman, 48 years old, also has in the launcher to enter a face, check emails, chat with friends and everything integrated into the same interface tells me "it looks like a big cell phone!" and the strawberry of my dessert are my grandparents, who have a digital camera, and they take photos of the cat, the parrot, the dog ... etc ... and download them to the pc very easy, because in the launcher, with those big icons and very legible, the "card with photos" appears. They open the photos there and even send them by mail! with those big font buttons that ubuntu has. It seems simple to them and they are not lost.
