The main objective of Kiwix is to provide the knowledge contained in Wikipedia offline, that is, without Internet connection for everyone who wants. This is very important for places where network access is limited or restricted, for example: security zones, underdeveloped countries, low coverage areas, etc. It is also possible to use Kiwix as a connection independence resource, to save connection costs and to carry out work in remote sites where the connection to the network is null or intermittent.
Kiwix is a multimedia content reader specialized in making Wikipedia available without an Internet connection (see characteristics). This is done by reading the content of the project stored in a ZIM format file, which is nothing more than the content of the compressed wikipedia. The Kiwix-serve version works as a local HTTP server.
The project is constantly growing and they are working very hard to provide the latest ZIM file updates for multiple languages. In case you want to collaborate with the project, you can use this guide. Currently, it is possible to read any wikimedia project, and not just Wikipedia, for which it was originally designed.
Kiwix is a free software project released under GPL3. It is made up mainly of collaborators; it does not have financial support and was not developed for profit. We trust the community and work out of passion.

My blog post :: unguided atv rentals in colorado
Any idea how to make it work in a network hoc by hoc inside to share the program with my classroom and if it is not possible, what is it that prevents it from working that way? I have been racking my head for 3 days and the most I achieved was that for a moment the page appeared to me when I loaded it in the server obcion and when I gave it load it told me that it was temporarily unavailable or had changed if you were very kind thanks
You need to use Ubuntu Server, I had to use version 10.04 because Kiwix no longer works on Precise or Quantal. Notice!!!!
It does not work in Windows-based LAN networks, since Kiwix has search methods for indexed databases and they do not allow searching in NETWORKS ...
There is also the python Argentina cdpedia project
A great program, very useful for places without internet (schools, rural libraries, etc.) or when you need information and you are in a place without coverage, it is a great option.
Downloading the 7GB zim file is long but worth it.
It is true! It is very good too! I recommend it.
Thanks for making me remember! A big hug! Paul.
I use Ubuntu and I want to install kiwix. I am half a neophyte in all this, so I apologize if I do not make myself understood. I have the installer for Windows, with the * .zim which is the most important and I want to install it on Ubuntu. How do i do it? What software do I need?
regards
yarbredy
If I remember correctly, you need a special reader.
You can download everything from here: http://www.kiwix.org/index.php/Main_Page/es Cheers! Paul.
