Latest Linux Mint news: version 13 will be called "Maya"

On the official blog of Linux Mint, Clem posted a series of quite interesting news related to this project, among them, that the next version of this distribution will have as name: Maya.

Coincidentally, it is not only the name of the daughter of Clem, but it coincides with this year where the Mayan civilization has given much to talk about, and with the meaning for the people who live in The India, which is: Delusion. Linux Mint 13 will have a separate version for MATE y Cinnamon, although it has not been decided which will come by default.

Linux Mint 10 has come to an end, it is likely to continue working for a few years, but it will not be officially supported and will not receive updates. Linux Mint 11 will be supported until October 2012. Linux Mint 9 y Linux Mint 12 will be supported until April 2013. Linux Mint 13 will be supported until April 2017.

Linux Mint y CompuLab are working together to improve a system for fitPC3 which comes pre-installed with a custom version of Linux Mint 12 with MATE 1.2 y XBMC. CompuLab they also help Linux Mint, sharing percent of their sales in an upcoming model called "MintBox" (which will be a version of the FitPC3 with a logo of Linux Mint).

Thanks to User Feedback, 68 errors were identified in the CR of LMDE. Among the bugs fixed, some affect the way ISO images were built, and the ability for the CD or USB stick to boot correctly on computers where the mounting order changed in the boot sequence. Consequently, the final version of LMDE 201204 and future versions of Linux Mint, they should work on more configurations and systems that you have previously failed to boot into.

Is Linux Mint based on Debian? Some time ago it was based on Ubuntu and since I have a lot without using Linux Mint I am somewhat lost. xD

No friend, there is a Linux MInt Edition that is more or less like a rolling release based on debian testing. apart are the normal linux mint distros that are still based on ubuntu.

this LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition).

And Linux Mint 1 to 13 Which are based on Ubuntu.

What good news, although the name is even a little scary, especially for me who live in Guatemala «cradle of the Mayas».

Without a doubt, linux mint 13 is a distro that I will try on my lap, in fact I have mint 12 on my laptop, so let's wait as the 13 comes and I think I'll download the version with mate without a doubt.

          hehe, how curious, coincidence 😀
We do not have to give more publicity to 2012 = x I want to live to get to use Linux Mint 20 with free ATI / Catalyst driver = O

Say a giant LOL with the name, because of the Mayans and all the end of the world stuff xD

According to mathematical calculations, the famous end of the world in 2012 should have occurred more than 7 months ago, since the Gregorian calendar -the one that almost all of us use today-, takes into account leap years, but not the Mayan one. hence the equivalence in the dates is not "exact" ... Therefore, there is a slight lag between the two and, in short, this whole apocalyptic affair is nonsense (although sometime they will have to be right). I just wanted to put that curiosity on record, haha.

As far as I could understand, the Mayans never predicted the end of the world, but a radical change at a general level (Environment, Climate ... etc) ..: S

      1.    Wolf said

Yes, indeed, I think it has to do with a paradigm shift ... We can see how the world is today, and I think that change would not hurt at all, if it were for the better, haha.

You are right but even so, other Mayan writings have already been found in Guatemala, which indicate that the end of the Mayan cycle is not 13 stations but 17, so we will have to wait many more years for the Mayan predictions to be fulfilled.

Great news, especially that there is a separate version for MATE and Cinnamon !, I look forward to its release in May.

PS you have to read, you have to read!

Note: The choice for this codename has nothing to do with the Mayan Calendar or the notorious cataclysmic interpretations for 2012 (by then we'll be looking at Linux Mint 14 and a different codename).

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Yes man, I did not say at any time that they chose the name due to the Mayan Civilization, but that it coincided with everything that has been said about this culture since last year ^^

Yes, I read it, the comment was for Alba and company xD

Well it's my personal opinion .. but I think that with the arrival of Gnome Classic that was ported to GTK3 I think that the MATE project will not have much relevance.

If Mint 13 will come with MATE that will be a nosedive .. if it will come with cinnamon specifically with the version in which it is at the moment, which is 1.4, it will not have much to offer the public the guys from MInt: /

They should focus on one project and polish it well so that you have a beautiful product to offer.

I repeat it is just a personal opinion 😉 greetings to all

I don't think so because Gnome Classic in terms of customization it is still very green. I also don't think to use MATE by default make Linux Mint go downhill, first because loyal users of Mint know that they have other alternatives, and second, because a large part of current users of Mint, they switched to this distro (among other things) fleeing the Desks so advanced that they have been appearing. But of course, I can be wrong 😀

      1.    Jamin samuel said

you would have to do a survey and ask mint users:

Which environment do you like the most?

        1 - MATE
        2- Cinnamomum

        and see the statistics xD
