Linus Torvalds talks privacy, CoC and Linux on desktops

linus torvalds interview

Linus Torvalds returned to lead the Linux project again and recently gave an exclusive interview to Swapnil Bhartiya, an Open Source world activist and recurring editor at the Linux Foundation headquarters.

In this interview where spoke about his vision on some issues related to the world and Linux Open Source technology, as well as his temporary exit from the project and the new code of conduct.

Linus comments on Linux in the field of desktop computers may be possible through Chromebooks, but he emphasizes that he is definitely not using a (Chromebook / Chrome OS) yet just because he cannot do the kernel tests regarding his work with Linux, other than that he considers an excellent experience.

The conquest of Linux on the desktop

The comment on Chromebooks shows how much the "conquest of the desk" still seems to be one of the few "stones in the shoe" of Linus Torvalds .

Bhartiya comments that "even though Linux is everywhere," Linus Torvalds considers the desktop important.

Linus thinks Chrome OS and Android are the way to go., he says optimistic, although: "I have been optimistic about the desktop for 25 years," he plays, but who knows what awaits us in the future. Much has changed in this segment in the last 8 to 10 years.

The open source development model

Linus Torvalds comments on the open source model which has become the standard of development today, saying he understands that there are niche products that find even more value in the old proprietary software mode.

But even these companies (that work with proprietary software) use more or less open source to provide their services or create their work infrastructure.

When asked if he cares about the philosophy involved in Open Source or Free Software (Free Software), Linus said that the only thing that really matters is the open source software code, especially the ones you work on, and not the business model or philosophy behind it.

About privacy

Linus Torvalds comments that he doesn't care much about his privacy online, but admits that this can be a considerable problem for many more sensitive people.

He claims that, as a public person, he doesn't find it useful to worry too much about such things, after all, a lot of him is already on the internet publicly.

Linus Torvalds still comments that data collection seems to have no spin as well, after all (data) is necessary to build better custom products, the big question is that you can choose to offer it or not.

Linus Torvalds comments that people in the United States, in general, have not yet fully "woken up" to that.

About your personality and the CoC (Code of Conduct)

Linus Torvalds in a Con

Linus Torvalds comments on their behavior when replying to emails from the Linux development community, saying that today he prefers to avoid answering some things and focus on solving the problem, something like: talk less, do more.

When asked about his departure from the project for attrition or simply "too much worked", Linus Torvalds he comments on "not being tired of Linux" as many thought when he just recently "took a vacation".

He complemented by saying that it was a stressful period, with several technical problems to be solved and that sometimes he needs "a long weekend" just to think of something different, before returning to his passion.

At one point, Greg Kroah-Hartman, who had been in Linus's place During these "holidays" and is one of Linus Torvalds' right arms for several years in the Linux project, he joins the interview to discuss some topics.

Both comment on the difficulties of the final moments of the release of a version of the Linux Kernel, in its latest version, troubleshooting, with more than 70 important patches and things of the sort, ended up making the moment a little "more tense" than usual.

But also said the first week of the remake is "naturally troubled and always has been," stating that Linux remains the open source project with the most people working simultaneously with each release.

Good extract and very punctual, thank you very much. Now about Linus, an attitude very different from that of Mr. Ikey Doherty, (ex) visible head and (ex) brain of Solus Project that in its moment of glory became one of the 6 most important Distros in the world and from a moment to another lost the map, closed all his social networks, left collaborators and users watching a spark in the most irresponsible way and also took with him passwords to the bank account where people made donations. The first comes back and puts his face, the second goes off to "learn to play guitar and finish his driving course."
