Linux 4.20-rc7 is now ready to download and test

Tux

The kernel development continues without major problems, now this seventh Release Candidate arrives, that is, the Linux 4.20-rc7, a new version to become the candidate at the end of 4.20 of the kernel. In fact, December 17, 2018 is the next date marked in kernel.org for a new release, so it won't take long to get to the next step. That step would come next week if there are no problems, and it should be that Linux 4.20 Final.

Linus TorvaldsAs usual, he is in charge of announcing the launch of this new RC in the LKML. So if you want to help, you can now download and install it on your distro to test it and detect possible things that need to be polished for the final launch of this same branch. As you know, this new version comes with a good number of bugs fixed, referring to some graphic drivers.

Mainly they have been AMDGPU drivers and Vega graphics cards, which have taken most of the contributors' attention to solve the problems present in the previous launch. Also, in the announcement, Torvalds himself has said that it is a small rc7, as he likes it. Possibly the cause is that many developers are already preparing the well-deserved Christmas holidays, but in any case it is not a great package ...

Besides those changes, we can also see other fixes for i915, other drivers, filesystems, etc., as well as necessary updates in certain parts of the code. By the way, after this they will start working in January on the new version of the kernel, which should be Linux 5.0, however, it seems that some portals are assuming that it will be called Linux 4.21 and the numbering will not be ended yet 4.x. We will see, what is decided about it. I would honestly prefer a jump to 5.x.

Merry Christmas to all readers of DesdeLinux!! Have a happy holiday and a prosperous 2019. Thank you for reading us.
