100% free Linux distributions

La FSF is a bit strict about which distributions are considered 100% Code Free o Private Software.

Ellos they have a list, with the distributions that they consider to have these characteristics.

These are the distributions GNU / Linux of which we know that they have a firm policy in which they commit to include and offer only free software. These distributions reject nonfree applications, programming platforms, drivers, and firmware. If they include any by mistake, they are removed. If you find nonfree software or documentation in these distributions, you can report it and get GNU Bucks in the process. For more information about what makes a free GNU / Linux distribution, please see our guide to free distributions.

Those selected in this case are:

  • BLAG Linux: a GNU / Linux distribution based on Fedora.
  • Dragon: GNU / Linux independent distribution based on the concept of simplicity.
  • Dynebolic: GNU / Linux distribution that places special emphasis on audio and video editing.
  • gNewSense: GNU / Linux distribution based on Debian and Ubuntu, sponsored by the FSF.
  • Musix GNU / Linux: Distribution based on Knoppix, with a special emphasis on audio production.
  • Parabola GNU / Linux: Arch-based distribution prioritizing easy system and package management.
  • triskele: GNU / Linux distribution for small businesses, home users and educational centers.
  • UTUTO-e: GNU / Linux distribution based on Gentoo. It was the first completely free GNU / Linux distribution recognized by the GNU Project.
  • venenux: GNU / Linux distribution built around the KDE desktop.

I find it curious that Debian is not on this listing. How can you appreciate gNewSense is based on Debian y Ubuntu. Curious about the fact that debian-squeeze comes with a 100% free kernel and only with packages from Hair. But anyway.

Advantages and disadvantages.

Talking about advantages and disadvantages would be somewhat contentious. I think this depends on each user, their ideology and needs, so I leave them up to you. What should we value?

  • Some hardware may not work as it should with the driver open.
  • On the other hand we would have a 100% open source OS.

Anyway, as I was saying, at your choice. Luckily i in Debian I would just have to remove from the sources.list the contribute, non-free.

I was going to tell you Debian but it was commented.

Anyway these distros are for extremists, Debian not because it works for servers but the others do

Debian is not there because it has non-free repositories available and suggests them, I don't know if it is for extremists, I think it is for those who know the difference between free software and open source and prefer the 1st, greetings

But is that if Debian suggests you jump into a well, would you do it? Also, I don't recall these repositories being suggested anywhere, the only thing I remember from the Debian 6 announcement is that if you have any issues they could be used. But come on, I don't see that as a suggestion per se.

Hahahaha .. Then I better throw myself to die .. Then you want to rescue me with a team that uses Arch, and what you start to configure it, I die hahahaha

LOL!!!!! HAHAHA!!!!! very, very funny the comment JAJAJAJA !!!!
Well, as long as it's an Arch team and not Debian Unstable or Ubuntu the latest version, I don't think there are so many problems, at least there wouldn't be big instability problems right? HAHAHA!!!!

            2.    elav <° Linux said

I had to jump the renegade .. Nobody put you in this rescue, and surely, with Debian Unstable or Ubuntu, they will save me faster than with Arch.

HAHAHAHAHAHA come on, I was hoping you already knew when I was joking HAHAHA.
I'm not trying to start the typical Arch VS Debian discussion, in fact ... I'm going to post a post saying the problems I'm having in Arch, or the ones I've had I'll see 😀

          3.    Courage said

Nah if it doesn't take that long to install, if you want I'll rescue you with Hasefroch ...

          4.    Courage said

Hey and why don't you do the Debian Vs Arch discussion in an article? There if you could kill yourself

            1.    elav <° Linux said

Na, when I want to kill him I put the monitor over his head, if that's why I have him next to me 😀

          5.    Courage said

Because you don't have me, if you don't ...

Too bad you don't have access to Let's Use Linux, if I didn't create it so you could fight a bit

I do not see anything wrong with these purist free software distros, but I do use proprietary software, because I bought the nvidia graphics, to have better graphics worth the redundancy and the proprietary driver gives me better performance.

Does anyone know if Parabola is KISS?

    1.    Courage said

      Parable yes I'm almost sure

Even being a pure distro, Trisquel detected all the hardware perfectly; when popular distros like Fedora, Ubuntu, Suse and Linux Mint 11 (all with Gnome) don't even work for me on live cd. It also has a certain charm and it looks great.
A good article, thanks for your work.

      MMM. I'm curious 😀

      Edit: I was itching 🙁

It was initially developed as a Debian-based distribution, but the source repositories were changed to Ubuntu with the release of version 2.0, in the summer of 2008. The project hosts its own repositories, which are derived from the main and Ubuntu "universe", but with all proprietary software removed.

Not at all, a real pleasure to please our readers 😀

I use Trisquel and it goes perfect.

I think debian is not included because, although debian hides itself in the fact that the contrib and non-free repositories are not its official repositories, in some cases the installer itself offers the option to activate them.
