Although the new version of Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu 11.04, this new version arrives without the Unity interface. It uses the old and classic GNOME look, which is sure to be a boon to many.
According to Clement Lefebvre himself, the creator of the Linux Mint project: “The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 11 Katya. Linux Mint 11 comes with updated software and brings improvements and new features to make your desktop more comfortable to use. " |
Linux Mint 11 highlights:
- Based on Ubuntu 11.04;
- Linux kernel 2.6.38.6;
- Without the Shell Unity;
- GNOME 2.32.1;
- One-click installer for multimedia codecs and additional applications;
- Many improvements to the Software Manager tool;
- Performance improvements for the Update Manager tool;
- Various improvements made to the Desktop Configuration tool;
- A new set of funds;
- mint-search-addon for Firefox 4, Chrome and Opera web browsers;
- Gwibber was eliminated;
- gThumb is the default image viewer;
- Banshee is the default music player;
- LibreOffice 3.3 office suite;
- Scroll bar overlay;
- Updated Mint-X theme;
- Added command 'apt download';
- Adobe Flash Player 10.2 plug-in;
- Many bug fixes.
Without a doubt one of the most notable improvements in Linux Mint 11 is the Software Center, with a fantastic redesign. They improved it a lot aesthetically, but they also added clarity in the organization, greatly facilitating the search for programs, either by categories or directly. Also, user ratings for programs, information regarding the space required to install packages, etc., certainly help new users to make the decision to install a program or not.
Another issue that has changed is the format in which we can download the ISO of the distribution. Definitely bet on LiveDVD, something that allows you to incorporate more packages.

I am a fan of Linux Mint, I currently use version 9. I have downloaded the latest version 11 and there is no way to leave it completely in Spanish. This part in Spanish and part in English. When trying to download the complete files in Spanish, it shows an error and does not download them. Does anyone know how to do it? At the moment I continue with Linus Mint 9, totally in Spanish.
