Linux Mint 12 will have its own interface for Gnome 3

I saw it coming, especially after reading the interview that did Clem Lefebvre TuxInfo about the future of Linux Mint.

A Clem it is very clear to him that neither Unity, neither gnome-shell, will give users the true usability they need when working with a computer, and that is why, according to what they tell us in the Linux Mint blog, will work on a new interface for Gnome 3 with stand (if possible) for Gnome 2.

Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" will not only be released in November this year with support for Gnome 2, but also with the introduction of Gnome 3. The radical changes introduced by the Gnome project have divided the community. At the time of the Linux Mint 11 release, we decided it was too early to adopt Gnome 3. This time, the decision is not so simple. Gnome 3.2 is more mature and we can see the potential of this new desktop and use it to implement something that looks and behaves better than anything based on Gnome 2. Of course we are starting from scratch and this process will take time and it can be spread across multiple versions. Until then, it is important that we continue to support the traditional Gnome 2 desktop. There will likely be two different editions to release, one for Gnome 2.32 and one for Gnome 3.2. We are also working collaboratively with the MATE project (which is a fork of Gnome 2) at the moment to see if we can do both on supported computers in an effort to stop running on Gnome 2 (or MATE) and Gnome 3 on the same system, either on Linux Mint 12, or for the future.

Without interesting doubts and excellent news. For sure not much is known about the project. Will it be a kind of Shell? We do not know, although I do not know to what extent they could reinvent the wheel. I think if they will take Gnome Fallback, and work on it, they could save work. Time will tell.

I installed Ubuntu 11.10 to test the aforementioned Gnome 3.2 and the truth is that I don't like it either, I tried that about gnome-fallback and I was not satisfied either, it is not entirely the same or with the facilities that Gnome 2 gives me. So I better install 11.04, if that is what the future holds for me in the desktop environment I think I will migrate my eternal and beloved Gnome 2 to test KDE.

Good morning, I've been with gnome 3.0 for a few days that has just entered the unstable branch. Not bad with the extensions that can be put on it. I think like you, that it should work on Gnome-Fallback joining forces and leave the gnome 2 behind.

Exact. I have been testing Gnome-Fallback on Ubuntu. I do not know if they have made any modifications, but it almost looks identical to Gnome2, although of course, it still does not have all the facilities that the latter has.

Let's see, said a blind man, it's not going to be that gnome finishes polishing the fallback before they do something (although I doubt it for now), but the fallback in gnome 3.2 is better than the one in gnome 3.0

Well, wait for the gnome 3.2 to enter debian, see what that fallback looks like.

Hi hug0lizama, if you want gnome 2 even for a season (I think a lot), install the linux mint debian edition LDME. That he has created his own repositories and I think it will take a while to put gnome 3, they will already look for something.

    regards

I am happy with Linux Mint 11 Debian Xfce. I have not tried Gnome 3 and Unity seems horrible to me, that's why I don't use Ubuntu anymore. Hopefully this shit between those two desks allows Xfce to grow and improve.

Hahaha lives convinced of that. What happens that in Xfce for my taste, they are working very slowly in the migration to Gtk3, but hey. Let's wait to see what happens.
